See If You Live In One Of The 13 US States Being Invaded By Cicadas In 2025

Brood XIV’s 2025 forecast covered parts of 13 states, but the Nature Conservancy and University of Connecticut lists differ over Indiana and South Carolina. See why the state lists are not address-level predictions and what Barnstable County recommends for protecting young trees.

Brood XIV, a 17-year periodical-cicada brood, was forecast to emerge in parts of 13 states in 2025. That forecast is now historical: the state lists differ by source, and neither means every county or neighborhood was affected.

For a more local answer, consult a brood map and local forestry or extension guidance. County maps show expected distribution, not a real-time census or certainty for a particular address.

Key takeaways

  • Brood XIV’s scheduled emergence years include 1991, 2008, 2025, and 2042, according to the University of Connecticut’s brood schedule.
  • The Nature Conservancy and the University of Connecticut each list 13 states for Brood XIV, but their lists differ: one includes South Carolina and the other Indiana.
  • State lists and county maps describe broad expected ranges; they do not establish that every part of a state was affected.
  • Female cicadas can injure young twigs while laying eggs. Young or newly planted trees are more vulnerable than mature trees.
  • Barnstable County’s 2025 guidance recommends tree netting with mesh no larger than one centimeter, installed before emergence and removed after adult activity ends.

What states were forecast to have cicadas in 2025?

Two consulted sources each name 13 states for Brood XIV, but they do not give the same list. The Nature Conservancy includes South Carolina; the University of Connecticut includes Indiana. Treat these as broad brood-range lists, not predictions that all residents or counties would see cicadas.

Publisher States listed for Brood XIV How to interpret the list
The Nature Conservancy Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia A 13-state forecast range; it includes South Carolina rather than Indiana.
University of Connecticut Biodiversity Research Collections Kentucky, Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia A 13-state brood range; it includes Indiana rather than South Carolina.

The USDA Forest Service periodical-cicada brood map service represents expected distribution by county. The service describes data compiled for a 2011 publication, so use it as a brood-distribution reference rather than a real-time report of 2025 sightings.

Will cicadas be everywhere in my state?

No. A state’s appearance on a brood list does not mean every county, town, or yard was within the emergence area. The University of Connecticut explains that generalized county boundaries can overestimate a brood’s range; its maps also rely on verified point records, and a missing record does not prove cicadas were absent.

For an address-specific answer, check local forestry or extension information alongside the Forest Service map. The map describes expected brood distribution, while local observations may add detail. Off-schedule stragglers can also occur outside the expected place or time.

Is Brood XIV still coming, or has the 2025 emergence ended?

The 2025 forecast is in the past. The University of Connecticut lists Brood XIV’s emergence years as 1991, 2008, 2025, and 2042; the next scheduled emergence is 2042.

Periodical cicadas emerge on synchronized 13- or 17-year schedules. A brood is a regional group of multiple cicada species that share an emergence schedule, not a single species. Annual cicadas may still be heard in other years and places.

Type Pattern What it means
Periodical cicadas, including Brood XIV Synchronize on a 13- or 17-year schedule Large emergences occur within a brood’s geographic range and scheduled year.
Other cicadas, including annual cicadas May appear in other years A cicada sighting outside Brood XIV’s expected range or year does not establish that Brood XIV emerged there.

Do cicadas damage trees and garden plants?

Female periodical cicadas cut slits in young twigs to lay eggs. The injury can kill twigs and cause flagging. Mature trees generally tolerate this better than very young or newly planted trees, according to Barnstable County’s 2025 cicada fact sheet.

Prioritize young or newly planted trees and other vulnerable woody plants in areas expecting an emergence. The fact sheet’s guidance is local to its southeastern Massachusetts context; it does not establish identical timing or risk for every state in the broad range.

How should you protect a young tree from cicadas?

Use netting with mesh no larger than one centimeter, secured below the canopy so cicadas cannot reach the branches. Install it before local emergence and remove it after adult cicada activity ends. Barnstable County’s 2025 fact sheet advises removal around early July in its local context; that date should not be treated as universal across the brood’s range.

Protection detail Guidance Source or limitation
Mesh size No larger than one centimeter Barnstable County, 2025 fact sheet.
Coverage Secure the net below the canopy Prevents access to branches where females lay eggs.
Timing Install before emergence; remove after adult activity ends Local emergence timing varies; Barnstable County’s early-July advice is not a universal date.
Which trees to prioritize Young or newly planted trees Mature trees generally tolerate twig injury better.

What kind of netting keeps cicadas off trees?

Choose tree netting with mesh no larger than one centimeter, enough material to cover the canopy, and a way to secure it below the canopy. Mesh size and secure coverage matter more than a product’s marketing label. Do not assume a particular product meets the specification unless its mesh size has been checked.

Should you use insecticide against periodical cicadas?

Barnstable County’s 2025 fact sheet says repeat pesticide applications are difficult and costly and are not recommended in most situations. For a vulnerable tree, consult local extension or forestry guidance about whether netting is appropriate for your area and timing.

Why might reports differ between nearby places?

Brood boundaries are local and do not follow state lines neatly. The University of Connecticut cautions that generalized county boundaries can overestimate a range, and verified point records do not cover every place. Off-schedule stragglers may also appear.

For these reasons, a state-level list is not a guarantee of emergence at a particular address. Use local reports and maps as evidence of expected or observed distribution, while keeping their limits in mind.

FAQ

What states were forecast to have cicadas in 2025?

The Nature Conservancy and the University of Connecticut each listed 13 states for Brood XIV. Their lists differ over South Carolina and Indiana, so check which source a state list follows.

Will cicadas be in every part of those states?

No. State lists describe a broad range, not statewide coverage. County maps and local reports are more useful for assessing a specific area, but generalized maps can still overestimate the range.

When is Brood XIV expected to emerge again?

The University of Connecticut lists 2042 as Brood XIV’s next scheduled emergence year after 2025.

How can I protect a young tree from cicadas?

Barnstable County’s 2025 guidance recommends netting with mesh no larger than one centimeter, secured below the canopy before emergence and removed after adult activity ends. Follow local timing guidance rather than applying its local calendar date everywhere.

The bottom line

Brood XIV was forecast to emerge in parts of 13 states in 2025, but the Nature Conservancy and University of Connecticut lists differ over South Carolina and Indiana, and neither list means every county was affected. The forecast is historical; for local planning, consult maps and local guidance. Young trees can be vulnerable to egg-laying injury, and Barnstable County recommends properly secured netting with mesh no larger than one centimeter in its 2025 guidance.
