Seventeen-year-old Dachshund Scooter finished last in Bella Vista Animal Shelter’s annual wiener dog race. But as a person walked beside him toward the finish line, spectators called his name, cheered, and applauded. The moment’s “win” was not his placement—it was the encouragement that made his slow finish feel like a celebration.
What happened in Scooter’s race?
DogTime reported on October 5, 2026, that Scooter took part in Bella Vista Animal Shelter’s annual wiener dog race. The report identifies him as a 17-year-old Dachshund, though it does not independently verify his age. As he made his way to the finish, a person walked alongside him. The crowd called, “Scooter! Scooter!” and cheered when he crossed the line last.
DogTime credits Instagram account @whatsupdox with sharing the clip and says text in the video identifies the shelter event. The report does not give the race date or full official results.
Why did his last-place finish feel like a victory?
The appeal of the scene is the contrast between the race’s usual measure—speed—and the crowd’s response. Spectators celebrated Scooter’s effort and presence rather than treating his last-place finish as a disappointment. Video text described him as “first in everyone’s hearts,” a playful expression of that reaction, not a claim about the race results.

DogTime’s short report captures a warm moment of inclusion: the audience made sure Scooter received attention and applause as he reached the finish. It does not establish what he or his handler experienced beyond what the clip and article describe.
What the story does—and doesn’t—tell us
This is a feel-good account of one dog at one event, not a veterinary assessment or guidance about senior dogs competing in races. The report does not describe Scooter’s health, stamina, race time, or the event’s safety practices. It therefore cannot show whether racing would be appropriate for other older dogs. Nor does it establish Scooter’s age or the event details independently of DogTime’s account.
