A pet is “senior” when it has entered the later part of its expected life, but there is no single age that applies to every animal. For dogs, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) ties senior status to each dog’s estimated lifespan. For cats, AAHA and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) use a fixed threshold of older than 10 years. Either way, the label describes where a pet sits in its life. It does not diagnose a condition, and it does not tell you how healthy your pet is today.
How senior status is defined for dogs and cats
AAHA’s 2023 Senior Care Guidelines for Dogs and Cats state that no specific age defines senior status across all species and breeds. Aging varies, so a single birthday cannot mark the same stage for every animal. The guidance therefore uses two different rules, one for each species.
| Species | Rule used to define senior | Source as cited in AAHA’s 2023 guidance | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dogs | The last 25% of estimated lifespan, through end of life | AAHA 2019 Canine Life Stage Guidelines | The age where senior begins depends on the lifespan estimated for that dog. Two dogs of the same age can be in different stages. |
| Cats | Older than 10 years | AAHA/AAFP 2021 Feline Life Stage Guidelines and AAFP 2021 Feline Senior Care Guidelines | A fixed threshold. A cat becomes senior after its 10th birthday under this framework. |
The dog rule is a proportion of expected life, so it moves with the lifespan estimate and is not a number you can look up. Ask your veterinarian what lifespan range applies to your dog’s size and breed, then work out where its last quarter begins. The cat rule is simpler, but it is still a life-stage marker rather than a health measure. A healthy 11-year-old cat and a 9-year-old cat with kidney disease are different cases, even though only one has crossed the line.
Comparing the two rules is useful, but do not turn pet years into a human age and treat that as settling the question. The species-specific guideline and your individual pet’s health and function matter more than any conversion.

What senior status does and does not mean
AAHA’s guidelines include the phrase “old age is not a disease.” The practical meaning is that aging brings predictable changes, but it does not explain every change. A new limp, a shift in behavior, or a steady loss of weight may come from a treatable problem. Treating them as inevitable can delay diagnosis.
The feline framework also recognizes end of life as a separate fifth stage that is not defined by age. A life-stage label does not determine prognosis or quality of life. Two senior pets of the same age can have very different outlooks.
Changes to take to your veterinarian
AAHA lists signs that may accompany chronic disease in older pets. Any of them that is new, persistent, or getting worse warrants a veterinary appointment rather than an assumption that it is simply age.

- Malaise or progressive lethargy, including less interest in walks, play, or social contact
- Behavior changes, such as new restlessness, withdrawal, confusion, or changes in house-training habits
- Reduced appetite or refusal to eat
- Altered thirst, including drinking noticeably more or less
- Weight loss over time, even if your pet still eats well
- Mobility changes, such as reluctance to jump, stiffness, or trouble on stairs
- Wounds that do not heal
These are clinical signs to discuss, not a home diagnostic checklist. Many of them overlap across conditions, so a veterinarian needs the full picture to decide what is going on.

A senior visit starts with history and examination, which put each change in context. AAHA notes that practical information helps, including details about the home environment, a mobility or pain checklist, a pain scale, and videos of your pet moving around at home. Videos are often more useful than a description, because a cat that hides its discomfort in the exam room may move differently in its usual space.
Depending on the findings, a veterinarian may consider conditions such as osteoarthritis, kidney or liver disease, heart disease, and neoplasia. Which of these is worth testing for depends on the individual animal.

Osteoarthritis in cats
AAHA’s 2023 guideline reports that more than 60% of cats have osteoarthritis in at least one joint, citing studies referenced in the guideline. Many of those cats show no abnormal finding on a physical examination, which is why owners and clinicians can miss it. The figure comes from the guideline’s review of published studies, not from AAHA’s own survey.
Routine assessment and senior care planning
AAHA recommends a medical workup once or twice a year for senior pets. The exact tests are chosen for each animal, but the guidance names the following for healthy seniors and a different baseline for those with a health concern.

| Senior with a known or suspected health concern | Minimum database that includes a detailed blood profile with a thyroid panel and a urinalysis | Not stated in the guidance; set with your veterinarian |
These are starting points, not a substitute for your veterinarian’s judgment. Test choice depends on history, examination findings, and the risks specific to your pet.

AAHA describes senior care as an individualized plan covering preventive, diagnostic, and treatment protocols. The 2023 guideline addresses the following areas:
- Pain management
- Nutrition
- Dental care
- Anesthesia planning for older pets
- Behavior support
- Comorbidities, meaning more than one condition at once
- Environmental changes at home
- Palliative and end-of-life care
Adapting the home for an older pet
If your pet has trouble with mobility, environmental changes can help. Non-slip surfaces, easier access to the litter box or bed, and a lower route to furniture are common adjustments. A pet ramp is one option some owners consider, particularly for getting in and out of a car or onto a couch. Ramps are not necessary for every senior pet, and AAHA does not recommend a specific product. Choose one for your pet’s size and ability, check that it is stable and non-slip, and watch the first few uses to see whether your pet can manage it safely. If your pet is struggling, the mobility change itself should be assessed by a veterinarian.
Terms to use carefully
Words such as “frailty,” “immunosenescence,” and “inflammaging” appear in discussions of aging. AAHA’s guidance is cautious here. Veterinary evidence for immunosenescence is limited, and inflammaging has not been validated in dogs and cats. These concepts should not be presented as established diagnoses for an individual pet. If your veterinarian uses a term like frailty, ask what they observed and how they are measuring it.
