For cats in the United States, the Seresto label calls for one collar per cat, fitted with room for two fingers between the collar and the neck. It is not a medication dose calculated by weight. The US label says not to use it on kittens younger than 10 weeks; it also gives specific precautions for cats with health conditions, cats on medication, and cats that are pregnant or nursing. Existing fleas are killed within 24 hours, but new-tick prevention begins only 48 hours after application. If a cat shows a suspected adverse reaction, remove the collar and contact a veterinarian.
What Seresto for cats is—and what “dosage” means
Seresto Cat is a pesticide collar for external use on cats. The US EPA-registered label names imidacloprid and flumethrin as its active ingredients and describes sustained release from the collar. These directions apply to the US cat product, not the dog collar or products sold under different national labels. See the US EPA-registered cat label.
The labeled amount is one cat collar per animal. There is no weight-based dose to calculate or divide. Use the cat-specific product and follow the package label for the market where you live.
How to put the collar on your cat
- Keep the collar in its bag and outer package until you are ready to fit it. Remove it from the packaging and unroll it.
- Remove the small plastic connectors along the collar’s inner edge.
- Place the collar around your cat’s neck and adjust it so you can fit two fingers between the collar and the neck. It should not be tight.
- Pass the end through the loop and trim the excess as directed on the label, leaving the specified amount beyond the loop.
- Check the fit periodically. The collar is intended to be worn continuously for its labeled protection period.
Elanco’s US product instructions also emphasize removing the connectors and using the two-finger fit check.

Age limits and when to ask a veterinarian first
Do not use the US Seresto cat collar on kittens younger than 10 weeks. Before using it on a debilitated or aged cat, or on a cat that is breeding, pregnant, or nursing, consult a veterinarian. Consult a veterinarian first if your cat is receiving medication.
How quickly does Seresto work, and how long does it last?
| Parasite or situation | What the US label says |
|---|---|
| Fleas already on the cat | Killed within 24 hours after initial application. |
| New fleas arriving after application | Killed within two hours; the label describes eight months of protection against further flea infestation. |
| Flea pupae in the home | May continue to emerge for six weeks or longer, depending on climatic conditions. The label advises treating living areas with a product approved for home use. |
| Ticks already on the cat when the collar is fitted | May remain attached and visible; remove ticks present at application. Do not assume the collar immediately kills attached ticks. |
| New tick infestation | Prevention begins 48 hours after application. The label says new ticks may be repelled and/or killed as quickly as six hours after that initial 48-hour period. |
These are product-label timing claims, not a guarantee about how an individual cat will respond. The eight-month duration refers to protection against further flea infestation, not a claim that environmental flea pupae stop emerging.

Possible side effects and what to do
The label says occasional scratching can occur during the first few days in animals that are not used to wearing collars. Slight hair loss or mild skin reactions at the application site may occur and usually recover within one or two weeks without removing the collar. Separately, the label lists adverse events reported in connection with use, including application-site changes such as itching, redness, inflammation, lesions, burns, self-trauma, or ulcers; it also lists behavioral changes, lethargy, reduced appetite, vomiting, hair loss, hyperactivity, skin disorders, vocalization, and excessive salivation.
If your cat develops symptoms listed in the label, remove the collar and consult a veterinarian. Contact a veterinarian promptly if you suspect an adverse reaction. The label cautions that adverse-event reports are incomplete, that their frequency cannot be reliably estimated, and that a causal connection cannot always be established. A listed report is not proof that the collar caused that event.

EPA’s review notes that some reported incidents involving moderate or severe clinical signs appeared to improve after collar removal, and that some symptoms recurred in association with reapplication. These are findings from reviewed reports, not a prediction of what will happen to a particular cat. The EPA Seresto Pet Collar Review describes the agency’s incident monitoring.
Handling precautions for people and pets
- Avoid contact with your eyes, skin, or clothing while fitting the collar. Wash thoroughly with soap and cold water afterward.
- People with known sensitivity to the collar’s ingredients should avoid contact. The collar is not for human use.
- Keep it away from children’s mouths and play; do not let small children play with it or put it in their mouths.
What EPA’s review says about safety and registration
On July 13, 2023, the US Environmental Protection Agency announced additional mitigation measures after reviewing incident and other data with assistance from the Food and Drug Administration. EPA said Seresto continued to meet the registration standard under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), while requiring added label warnings, removal instructions, and incident-reporting information. EPA limited the then-current registration approval to five years for continued evaluation. Read the EPA mitigation announcement for the agency’s decision.

EPA reported that deaths it found probably or definitely related to the collars involved mechanical strangulation or trauma, often associated with failure of the release mechanism. For other reported deaths, EPA did not identify a probable or definite association in its analysis. These are conclusions about reports reviewed by the agency; they do not establish zero risk. EPA also required Elanco to evaluate possible changes to the emergency release mechanism and report its analysis. For current US regulatory status, consult EPA’s review page.
