Servals are wild African cats, not domestic breeds or ordinary pets. Learn about their size, behavior, specialist care needs, and legal considerations, plus how they differ from Savannah cats.

A serval is not a cat breed or an unusually large house cat. Leptailurus serval is a wild African felid adapted to wetlands, tall grass, and hunting small prey. Its dramatic appearance comes with wild behavior and demanding care requirements, so it is not suitable as an ordinary family pet.

This profile explains serval size, behavior, professional care needs, and why owning one is very different from living with a domestic cat.

What is a serval?

The serval (Leptailurus serval) is a wild cat species native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is not a domesticated breed. A Savannah cat is a separate domestic hybrid breed developed from serval–domestic-cat ancestry; a Savannah and a serval are not the same animal. The IUCN Cat Specialist Group identifies the serval as a living wild species, while TICA describes the Savannah as a distinct breed.

Servals are specialized predators rather than companion animals. They can become accustomed to familiar human caretakers, especially in a professional facility, but habituation does not remove their instincts, strength, territorial behavior, urine marking, or ability to injure someone. The ASPCA considers wild animals unsuitable as family pets because of welfare, safety, and disease concerns.

In the wild, adults are generally solitary. They are most active around dawn, dusk, and at night, although activity changes with season, habitat, and whether a female is raising kittens.

Serval appearance and size

A serval’s body is built for detecting and striking prey in tall vegetation. Its long legs lift its head above grass, its large ears help locate rodents, and its powerful hind limbs allow it to leap high into the air.

Feature Typical description
Coat Tawny, yellow-brown, or pale yellow with black spots; some spots may form stripes along the neck and shoulders
Ears Very large, rounded ears with contrasting white markings
Body shape Small head, long neck, long legs, and a relatively short tail
Weight Approximately 7–18 kg (15–40 lb)
Head-and-body length Approximately 59–100 cm (23–39 in)
Tail length Approximately 28–38 cm (11–15 in)
Lifespan Up to about 22 years in human care; wild lifespans are generally lower

Individual size varies by sex, age, genetics, health, and nutrition. A large serval can be taller and more physically imposing than people expect from its body weight.

Natural habitat and behavior

Servals are strongly associated with habitats that combine dense cover, water, and plentiful small prey. These include marshes, reed beds, wetlands, grasslands, and areas along rivers and streams. They are not naturally adapted to spending their lives in a suburban house or a small backyard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rodents commonly make up roughly 80–90% of the wild diet. Servals also take birds, frogs, fish, reptiles, and insects. They may listen for prey beneath vegetation, pounce through grass, dig, or jump vertically to catch birds. These diet estimates are reported by the IUCN Cat Specialist Group.

Adult servals usually defend individual territories. Males generally use larger home ranges than females. This solitary, territorial lifestyle matters in captivity: a serval may not welcome unfamiliar people, dogs, cats, or another adult serval into its space.

Can a serval be a pet?

For most households, no. A serval should not be treated as a family pet, a low-maintenance exotic cat, or a domestic cat with longer legs.

A hand-raised serval may recognize its caretakers and accept particular routines. That does not make it predictably safe. A frightened, frustrated, territorial, or overstimulated animal can bite or strike with its paws. Children, visitors, unfamiliar handlers, and other pets are especially difficult to protect from those risks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Professional facilities use trained staff, written handling procedures, secure barriers, controlled feeding methods, and emergency-response plans. AZA guidance for serval ambassador animals calls for at least two trained staff members in the immediate area during handling and training in injury response and safe food delivery. That standard is a useful indication of the risk involved; it is not the setup of an ordinary pet home.

Housing requirements

A serval needs professionally designed, escape-resistant containment—not unrestricted access to a house. The enclosure must support movement and natural behavior while preventing contact with unauthorized people and other animals.

Appropriate planning may include:

  • Secure primary containment and secondary containment
  • Weather-appropriate shelter and shaded refuges
  • Elevated platforms, catwalks, hammocks, and jumping structures
  • Safe digging areas and varied substrates
  • Reliable clean water
  • A quarantine or isolation plan
  • Escape prevention and an emergency recapture procedure
  • Separation from children, visitors, unfamiliar animals, and untrained handlers

There is no single “backyard serval enclosure size” that makes private ownership suitable. A proper design depends on the individual animal, climate, local law, veterinary access, and professional exotic-felid standards. The enclosure also needs regular inspection: a damaged latch, weak mesh, or compromised roof can become a serious public-safety problem.

Enrichment items must be selected for the individual serval. AZA guidance notes that some servals may ingest inappropriate materials such as cloth or hay, so objects should not be left unsupervised unless their safety is known. See the AZA Serval Ambassador Animal Care Guidelines.

Diet and feeding

Servals are obligate carnivores, but feeding one is not as simple as buying raw meat or filling a bowl with ordinary cat food. Serval nutrition has not been studied rigorously enough to establish one universal diet. A captive diet should be designed with an experienced exotic-animal veterinarian and, where possible, a qualified nutritionist; professional guidance uses domestic cats as a nutritional model.

Professional diets may use nutritionally complete commercial exotic-felid foods, appropriately prepared chicken, rodents, rabbits, selected bones, beef heart, fish, and other animal products. Whole prey can provide bones, organs, hide, and feeding behaviors associated with natural hunting, but it also brings risks involving nutritional imbalance, contamination, storage, and infectious disease.

Raw pork should not be used casually: the Merck Veterinary Manual warns that raw pork can transmit pseudorabies. The amount and composition of food must also be individualized. Regular weighing and body-condition checks are important because excess weight can contribute to arthritis and organ problems. AZA guidance does not prescribe one universal feeding amount for all servals.

Enrichment and training

Serval enrichment should give the animal safe ways to stalk, search, jump, climb, dig, explore, and work for food. Changing how and where food is presented can encourage natural searching behavior. Other options, when safe for that individual, may include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Food hidden in several locations
  • Moveable platforms and elevated walkways
  • Novel scents and sturdy, non-ingestible objects
  • Digging substrates
  • Supervised water-based or fish-related activities
  • Voluntary crate, shifting, and medical-behavior training

Positive-reinforcement training can make routine movement and veterinary care safer. It does not replace enclosure enrichment: a short training session cannot provide the stimulation a serval needs for the rest of the day.

Adults are generally housed alone after maturity. Same-sex littermates may tolerate one another temporarily, but that tolerance can change after sexual maturity. Opposite-sex littermates must be separated before sexual maturity to prevent breeding and inbreeding.

Veterinary care

Before acquiring a serval, a prospective keeper would need written confirmation from a veterinarian experienced with exotic felids. Many routine procedures require specialized restraint or anesthesia, and not every small-animal clinic can safely provide them.

A veterinary plan should cover:

  • Physical examinations and preventive monitoring
  • Complete blood count, serum chemistry, and serum banking
  • Urinalysis when possible
  • Dental care
  • Parasite screening and control
  • Weight and body-condition monitoring
  • Vaccination decisions appropriate to the animal and jurisdiction
  • FeLV, FIV, and other testing when indicated
  • Quarantine after acquisition or transport
  • Safe anesthesia, emergency, and after-hours procedures

AZA guidance reports that felid veterinary advisers recommend preventive examinations approximately every two to three years, with more frequent or additional care determined by the individual animal. That interval is not a substitute for prompt treatment when the animal shows illness, injury, appetite changes, or behavior changes. Confirm in writing that a qualified veterinarian is willing and able to treat a serval before obtaining one.

Servals and other pets

Claims that socialization makes a serval safe with children, dogs, cats, or visitors are misleading. Individual animals may tolerate particular companions, but adult servals are generally solitary and introductions can result in aggression or injury.

A serval’s prey drive also creates risks for small pets, birds, and animals kept nearby. Even if an animal appears calm for months or years, its response can change with maturity, pain, fear, breeding behavior, resource guarding, or an unfamiliar event. Physical separation and controlled professional handling are safer than relying on a serval’s apparent friendliness.

Is it legal to own a serval?

Legality depends on the exact location and the purpose of possession. In the United States, state, county, municipal, zoning, animal-control, dangerous-wildlife, importation, and building rules may apply independently.

The federal Big Cat Public Safety Act, enacted as Public Law 117-243 on December 20, 2022, lists lions, tigers, leopards, snow leopards, jaguars, cougars, and hybrids of those species as prohibited wildlife species. Servals are not included in that statutory list. That fact does not mean a serval is legal to own in a particular state, county, or city. Consult the law text and applicable local authorities.

Before considering possession, a person would need to contact the relevant wildlife agency, local government, zoning office, animal-control authority, and insurer. Depending on the jurisdiction, requirements may include permits, inspections, facility standards, liability insurance, veterinary documentation, or a complete prohibition. USDA Animal Welfare Act rules may also apply to regulated exhibition, commercial transportation, and some commercial animal activities; USDA licensing does not replace other legal permissions.

International movement is separately regulated. Servals are listed in CITES Appendix II, so cross-border trade and transport require applicable CITES and national permits.

Serval vs. Savannah cat

Serval Savannah cat
Wild African cat species Domestic hybrid breed with serval ancestry
Not a domestic breed Recognized as a breed by cat registries, including TICA
Requires wild-felid containment and specialist care Care requirements depend on generation and individual, but it is intended for domestic-cat ownership
Adult behavior remains that of a wild felid Can display energetic, athletic, and distinctive traits, but is not the same species

Generational labels and breeder claims should be checked carefully when considering a Savannah cat. A Savannah is not a loophole for keeping a serval, and a serval should never be advertised as an ordinary Savannah or domestic cat.

Common misconceptions

  • “A serval is a breed.” No. It is a wild species.
  • “A serval is basically a large house cat.” No. Its diet, housing, territoriality, handling, and safety risks are substantially different.
  • “Hand-raising makes one safe.” No. It may improve familiarity with caretakers but does not remove wild-animal risks.
  • “One standard diet works for every serval.” No. Professional guidance calls for individualized nutritional planning because evidence does not establish one universal diet.
  • “No federal ban means ownership is legal.” No. State and local rules may prohibit or heavily regulate possession.
  • “A Savannah and a serval are the same.” No. A Savannah is a domestic hybrid breed; a serval is a wild species.

FAQ

Is a serval a good house pet?

No. Servals are wild, solitary, territorial predators with specialized housing, diet, handling, and veterinary needs. Even a hand-raised serval can bite or strike and should not be treated as a normal family pet.

How big does a serval get?

Adults commonly weigh about 7–18 kg (15–40 lb), measure approximately 59–100 cm (23–39 in) from head to body, and have tails about 28–38 cm (11–15 in) long. Individual size varies.

Can servals live with dogs or domestic cats?

They should not be assumed to be compatible. Adult servals are generally solitary, and introductions to other animals can lead to aggression or injury. Professional containment and separation are safer than relying on socialization.

Is it legal to own a serval?

There is no single answer. Laws vary by country, U.S. state, county, city, zoning authority, and purpose of possession. Servals are not listed among the species prohibited by the U.S. Big Cat Public Safety Act, but other laws may ban them or require permits, inspections, and specialized facilities.

The Bottom Line

The serval’s striking appearance does not make it a domestic cat. It is a wild African species that needs secure professional housing, a carefully formulated carnivorous diet, specialist veterinary care, structured enrichment, and trained handling. Anyone attracted to the look of a serval should research domestic breeds or a properly regulated Savannah cat rather than assuming a serval can safely live as a household pet.
