It can combine Labrador enthusiasm and retrieving instincts with the Shar-Pei’s independence, loose skin, and protective nature—but there is no official breed standard for this cross. Puppies from the same litter may grow into noticeably different dogs.
That unpredictability matters when you are assessing size, temperament, exercise needs, grooming, and health. The most useful information comes from the individual dog, its parents, and its medical history—not from a fixed description of the mix.

Terms such as “rare-color Shar-Pei Lab,” “mini Shar-Pei Lab,” or “designer breed” do not make the dog a recognized variety. They also do not guarantee a particular adult size, temperament, or level of health.
Size and appearance
There is no verified adult weight or height range for a Shar-Pei Lab mix. According to the AKC Labrador Retriever profile, Labrador Retrievers are generally 21.5–24.5 inches tall and weigh 55–80 pounds, while Chinese Shar-Peis are medium-sized dogs. A cross may fall within part of that apparent range, but genetics, sex, body condition, and the traits inherited from each parent all affect the result.
| Feature | What may occur | Why it is unpredictable |
|---|---|---|
| Build | Muscular, medium-to-large frame | The puppy may take after either parent in bone structure and proportions. |
| Coat | Short coat with possible moderate or heavy shedding | The Labrador’s dense double coat can produce more shedding than the Shar-Pei’s typically lower-maintenance coat. |
| Face | Broad muzzle, facial wrinkles, or a more Labrador-like head | Wrinkle depth and head shape vary between individuals. |
| Tail | Straight or slightly curled | Tail carriage is inherited rather than standardized in the cross. |
| Color | Black, yellow, chocolate, cream, fawn, red, or dilute shades | Color depends on the genes carried by both parents. |
Do not use puppy size alone to predict the adult dog accurately. A responsible breeder should discuss the actual parents’ size and provide their health records rather than promise a precise adult weight.
Temperament
The Labrador Retriever is generally affectionate, outgoing, energetic, and socially adaptable. The Chinese Shar-Pei is often described as loyal, intelligent, independent, protective, and reserved with unfamiliar people or dogs. A Shar-Pei Lab mix may show any combination of these tendencies.
Some individuals are friendly with nearly everyone. Others bond closely with their household but need careful introductions to visitors. A dog with strong Labrador traits may be enthusiastic and physically exuberant; one with stronger Shar-Pei traits may be more watchful and less willing to accept handling from strangers.
The mix should not automatically be labeled “good with children,” “safe with all dogs,” or “naturally protective but never aggressive.” Those outcomes depend on genetics, early socialization, training, health, and the individual dog. Children and dogs should always be supervised together.

Training and socialization
This cross can be rewarding to train, but the two parent breeds may contribute very different learning styles. Labradors are often eager to please and motivated by food, play, or retrieving. Shar-Peis can be intelligent yet independent, so repeating a command without making it worthwhile may not produce cooperation.
Use short, reward-based sessions and reinforce the behaviors you want. Avoid physical punishment or intimidation, which can increase fear and defensive reactions—particularly in a dog that is already reserved.
Important training priorities
- Basic cues: Teach name recognition, sit, down, stay, leave it, and a dependable recall.
- Leash manners: Start loose-leash walking early, before the dog’s size and strength make pulling difficult to manage.
- Impulse control: Work on greetings without jumping, waiting at doors, dropping objects, and settling on a mat.
- Handling: Pair gentle examination of the ears, feet, mouth, eyes, and skin folds with treats.
- Controlled socialization: Introduce the puppy gradually to people, stable dogs, surfaces, sounds, car travel, grooming, and veterinary procedures.
- Guarding prevention: Teach trades and calm responses around food, toys, beds, and household members.
A reserved puppy may need slower introductions than a typical outgoing Labrador. An excitable puppy may need more impulse-control work than its calm-looking face suggests.
Exercise requirements
There is no scientifically established exercise requirement for this mix. A Labrador-influenced dog may need substantial daily physical activity and mental stimulation, while a Shar-Pei-influenced dog may be more adaptable and content with moderate exercise.
Start with age-appropriate walks and play, then increase activity gradually. Useful options include brisk walks, scent games, food puzzles, obedience, rally, tracking, fetch, and swimming if the dog is a willing and safe swimmer.

Do not assume that every Shar-Pei Lab mix can tolerate long-distance running, prolonged hiking, or intense exercise in hot weather. Stop and seek veterinary advice for unusual fatigue, overheating, breathing difficulty, lameness, distress, or collapse. Labrador Retrievers can develop exercise-induced collapse, while Shar-Pei-related structure and respiratory problems may also affect stamina.

Grooming and everyday care
Grooming depends on the dog’s shedding, coat density, ear structure, and number of skin folds. A short coat does not necessarily mean a low-shedding coat: Labradors have a dense, water-resistant double coat and commonly shed.
- Brush regularly to remove loose hair, increasing frequency during heavy shedding periods.
- Inspect facial, lip, armpit, groin, and tail folds if the dog has them.
- Keep folds clean and dry, but do not routinely apply medicated products without veterinary advice.
- Check ears regularly and clean them only as directed by your veterinarian. Do not use cotton swabs deep in the ear canal or hydrogen peroxide without professional guidance.
- Trim nails before they become long enough to affect movement.
- Brush the teeth regularly or use a veterinary-approved dental-care plan.
- Bathe when dirty or when your veterinarian recommends it for a skin condition.
Skin folds can trap moisture and support bacterial or yeast infections. Foul odor, redness, dampness, pain, discharge, hair loss, or persistent itching is not simply a normal “Shar-Pei smell”; it warrants an examination.
Health concerns
Mixed ancestry does not eliminate inherited disease. A Shar-Pei Lab mix can inherit problems associated with either parent, and the absence of a breed standard means there is no single health profile that applies to every dog.

Conditions associated with the Shar-Pei side
Chinese Shar-Peis can be affected by entropion, glaucoma, retinal dysplasia, sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome, respiratory disorders, musculoskeletal disease, skin disease, immune-mediated conditions, gastrointestinal problems, and cancer.
Shar-Pei autoinflammatory disease, or SPAID, can involve recurrent fever, arthritis, swollen or painful hocks, ear disease, vesicular hyaluronosis, and amyloidosis. A Cornell SPAID test is designed for Shar-Peis and Shar-Pei crosses. It estimates the likelihood of disease risk; it does not guarantee that a dog will or will not become ill.
Shar-Pei fever should not be dismissed as a harmless breed characteristic. Recurrent fever needs veterinary investigation because amyloidosis can damage organs, including the kidneys and liver. Routine urine-protein screening may be appropriate for dogs with Shar-Pei ancestry, particularly when there is a history of recurrent fever.

Conditions associated with the Labrador side
Labrador Retrievers may be affected by hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, eye disease, heart disorders, hereditary myopathy, progressive retinal atrophy, and exercise-induced collapse. They are also prone to weight gain. Keeping a healthy body condition is important because excess weight increases stress on developing and adult joints.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSkin and ear disease
Both parent breeds can experience allergies, chronic itching, ear inflammation, and recurrent infections. Signs may include head shaking, red ears, odor, discharge, chewing at the feet, hair loss, thickened skin, or repeated moist folds. Causes can include atopy, parasites, bacteria, yeast, or another medical problem, so treatment should be based on a veterinary diagnosis.
Warning signs that need veterinary attention
Arrange prompt veterinary care for:
- Recurrent fever or painful, swollen hocks.
- Squinting, eye pain, excessive tearing, or an eyelid rolling inward.
- Persistent itching, repeated ear infections, or foul-smelling discharge.
- Red, wet, painful, or foul-smelling skin folds.
- Vomiting, poor appetite, marked lethargy, or increased thirst and urination.
- Lameness, exercise intolerance, or unusual difficulty breathing.
- Collapse during or after exercise.
What health testing should a breeder provide?
Ask for records for both parents, not just a verbal assurance that the litter is healthy. The recommended checks depend on the parent breed.
| Parent | Useful screening to ask about |
|---|---|
| Chinese Shar-Pei | Hip, elbow, patella, eye, and thyroid evaluations; SPAID risk and family history; discussion of recurrent fever, kidney disease, skin disease, and eye problems. |
| Labrador Retriever | Hip, elbow, and ophthalmologist evaluations; exercise-induced collapse, CNM, and PRA-prcd DNA tests; other tests recommended by the Labrador Retriever parent club. |
Ask to see certificates or results that can be independently verified through the relevant health-record database or veterinary provider. A DNA ancestry report is not the same as health screening, and the word “DNA tested” is meaningless unless the breeder identifies the exact condition tested and supplies the result.
Is a Shar-Pei Lab mix hypoallergenic?
No. Neither parent is established as hypoallergenic, and the Labrador parent commonly sheds. A cross may shed less or more than a particular Labrador, but it should not be marketed as allergy-free or reliably low-shedding.

It can be, but the answer depends on the individual dog and the household. A well-socialized, healthy dog with a stable temperament may thrive with an active family that provides training and supervision. A dog that is wary, protective, uncomfortable with handling, or reactive around other animals may need a more experienced home.

FAQ
How big will a Shar-Pei Lab mix get?
There is no official adult size for this cross. The AKC Labrador Retriever profile gives a typical Labrador range of 55–80 pounds and 21.5–24.5 inches, while Shar-Peis are medium-sized, but a mix may be smaller, larger, heavier, or lighter depending on its genetics and body condition.
Are Shar-Pei Lab mixes aggressive?
The mix is not automatically aggressive, but some may inherit the Shar-Pei’s reserve or protective behavior. Others may be highly social like many Labradors. Temperament depends on the individual dog, breeding, health, socialization, and training.
Do Shar-Pei Lab mixes shed?
Many do. The Labrador parent has a dense double coat and commonly sheds. Coat length alone does not predict how much hair a particular mix will lose.
Do they need their wrinkles cleaned every day?
Not necessarily. Care depends on how many folds the dog has and whether moisture or infection develops. Inspect folds regularly, keep them dry, and ask a veterinarian about cleaning products and frequency.
Are Shar-Pei Lab mixes easy to train?
They can learn well, but training may be inconsistent if the dog inherits the Shar-Pei’s independent nature. Reward-based sessions, clear boundaries, early socialization, and impulse-control work are important.
Are Shar-Pei Lab mixes healthier than purebred dogs?
Not automatically. They can inherit orthopedic, eye, skin, ear, inflammatory, kidney, and exercise-related conditions associated with either parent. Health records and veterinary care matter more than the crossbreed label.
The Bottom Line
A Shar-Pei Lab mix may be an affectionate, athletic companion, but it is not a predictable breed with guaranteed Labrador friendliness or Shar-Pei toughness. Prepare for variation in size, shedding, sociability, exercise needs, and skin care. When choosing a puppy or adult dog, give more weight to the individual’s behavior, structure, veterinary history, and verifiable parent health testing than to the name “Shar-Pei Lab mix.”
