What they do establish is that a puppy may cry during its first nights as it adjusts to a new home—and that crying can also signal a need for a toilet break, comfort, or veterinary attention. If you have just brought a puppy home, here is how to respond without assuming either the worst or that the crying should simply be ignored.
What is known about the shelter call?
No source reviewed confirms the person, the call, what prompted it, how the shelter responded, or what happened to the puppy. There is also no established statistic here for how often new puppies cry on the first night or adopters contact a shelter within 24 hours. The dramatic headline should not be taken as evidence that this is a typical experience.
For a new owner facing a crying puppy, the useful question is what the puppy may need right now—and whether there are signs that call for professional help.
Why might a puppy cry on its first night?
A puppy may be unsettled after leaving its mother and littermates and arriving in an unfamiliar place. PDSA says crying or barking can happen while a puppy adjusts; the American Kennel Club likewise notes that some puppies cry for a few nights, while others sleep through the first night. This is general context, not a diagnosis: distress can also mean the puppy needs to toilet, feels frightened, or is unwell.

Crate timing can help explain the pattern. PetMD veterinarian Brittany Grenus, DVM, says whining soon after a puppy is placed in a crate can be part of first-night adjustment, while crying later in the night may mean it needs a bathroom break.
What to do during the first day at home
- Start with a toilet break and a quiet space. PDSA recommends showing the puppy its toilet area first, then introducing its own space before the rest of the home.
- Keep the introduction small and calm. Limit access to the home, introduce household members gently, and skip visitors on day one, as the American Kennel Club advises.
- Keep familiar routines where possible. PDSA recommends maintaining the puppy’s usual food routine and offering regular toilet opportunities. Ask a veterinarian about safe outdoor exposure if you are unsure of the puppy’s vaccination status or local disease risks.
- Let the puppy settle at its own pace. A newly adopted dog may be overwhelmed, hide, or eat or drink less at first, according to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). Its “3-3-3 Rule”—three days, three weeks, and three months—is a framework for setting expectations, not a guaranteed timetable for every puppy.
How to respond when the puppy cries at night
Comforting a frightened puppy is appropriate. PDSA warns that ignoring a scared puppy may increase its stress, and AAHA says a puppy should be able to turn to its person as a safe place. Puppy specialist Kathy Callahan, quoted by AAHA, puts the priority this way: “The most important thing to teach is not sit down, touch, stay. It is you’re safe with me.”

Keep the response calm and practical. Check whether the puppy may need a toilet break, offer reassurance, and return it to its sleeping area. If the crying changes or seems extreme, do not assume it is simply normal adjustment; contact a veterinarian or the shelter for guidance.
Choose a sleeping setup that suits the puppy
A crate is optional, not a requirement for the first night. If you use one, introduce it positively: AAHA advises letting the puppy explore with the door open rather than forcing it inside or leaving it to cry it out. If the puppy sleeps in a crate, placing it near your bed can keep it close and help you hear when it needs to toilet, AAHA says. A quiet bed or familiar-smelling blanket is another possible comfort, not a guaranteed way to stop crying.

When to contact a veterinarian or the shelter
Contact a veterinarian if the puppy seems ill or you are worried about its condition; a shelter can also advise you about the puppy’s history and the right next step. The American Kennel Club recommends arranging a veterinary check in the next few days. AAHA advises consulting a veterinarian if a newly adopted dog’s reduced eating or drinking lasts more than a day or two.
Do not wait for a general settling-in timeline if a symptom concerns you. A veterinarian can assess the puppy and tell you whether it needs prompt care. For questions about prior records, feeding, or the adoption transition, contact the shelter directly.
