A Sheepadoodle can be an affectionate, clever, entertaining family dog—but it is not a predictable “designer breed” with a fixed appearance or temperament. This cross between an Old English Sheepdog and a Poodle may grow into a large, energetic dog with a demanding coat, strong attachment to its family, and a tendency to herd, bark, jump, or chase when its needs are overlooked.
The right Sheepadoodle is a good match for an active household that has time for training, companionship, exercise, brushing, and professional grooming. It is a poor choice if you need a guaranteed non-shedding dog, a naturally quiet companion, or a pet that can be left alone for most of the day.

What is a Sheepadoodle?
A Sheepadoodle is an Old English Sheepdog–Poodle cross. Unlike an established purebred breed, it has no single official specification for height, weight, coat, color, body shape, temperament, or working ability. Two puppies sold under the same name may mature into noticeably different dogs.
The generation label describes the parents, but it does not guarantee the result:

- F1: An Old English Sheepdog crossed with a Poodle.
- F1B: A Sheepadoodle crossed back to a Poodle.
- Later generations: Sheepadoodles bred through additional generations, with varying proportions of each parent breed.
An F1B is not automatically non-shedding, allergy-safe, smaller, or easier to live with. The actual parents and wider family history matter more than the label. For example, an F1B bred to a Miniature Poodle may be smaller than an F1 produced from a Standard Poodle and a large Old English Sheepdog.
Size and appearance
Standard Sheepadoodles are commonly reported at approximately 16–22 inches tall and 65–85 pounds. That is a useful expectation, not a breed standard. Some adults will be outside those figures. “Miniature Sheepadoodle” is also a marketing term rather than a regulated size category; these dogs generally involve a Miniature Poodle parent, but their adult size is not guaranteed.
Before choosing a puppy, ask for the adult weights and heights of both parents and several related adult dogs. A puppy’s current weight is a poor substitute for family history, particularly when the breeder uses a smaller Poodle in one generation.

- Loose waves or a fleece-like texture
- Tighter curls
- A shaggy coat resembling the Old English Sheepdog
- A coat that more closely resembles the Poodle
Black and white is common, but colors and patterns are not standardized. Coat texture and shedding can vary even among littermates.
Temperament and everyday behavior
A Sheepadoodle may combine the Old English Sheepdog’s people-oriented, playful, watchful, and herding tendencies with the Poodle’s intelligence, athleticism, retrieving drive, and trainability. Those are possibilities, not promises. One dog may be more social and bouncy, while another may be more reserved, vocal, sensitive, or intent on controlling movement.
Common practical challenges include:
- Following family members from room to room and struggling with sudden long periods alone
- Alert barking at visitors, noises, or activity outside the home
- Jumping up or playing too roughly during adolescence
- Circling, chasing, nipping at heels, or attempting to move children and other pets
- Boredom when training is repetitive or daily activity is too limited
Both parent breeds are intelligent and active. A large yard does not replace interaction: a dog left to entertain itself may bark, dig, chew, chase, jump, or create other activities. Teaching an alternative behavior—such as settling on a mat when people move around—is more useful than simply correcting the unwanted behavior after it starts.
Are Sheepadoodles good with children?
A well-socialized Sheepadoodle may be affectionate and playful with children, but a large, energetic adolescent can knock over a small child without intending to cause harm. Herding behavior can also involve chasing, circling, blocking, or nipping at moving children.
Never leave a young child unsupervised with a dog. Supervision means an adult is close enough to intervene, not merely somewhere in the house. Teach the puppy that chasing, nipping, and body-slamming are not games, and give both the dog and child a way to disengage.

When assessing a puppy for a family, consider:
- How the parents behave around children and unfamiliar people.
- Whether the puppy recovers reasonably well after a mild, age-appropriate surprise.
- Whether adults can physically manage the dog through its large and excitable adolescent stage.
- Whether the household has time for daily exercise, training, and calm interaction.
- Whether children can follow rules about food, toys, sleeping areas, and handling.
Exercise and mental stimulation
A Sheepadoodle is generally a poor fit for a sedentary household. Old English Sheepdogs were developed for herding and droving, while Poodles are athletic working and retrieving dogs. A daily walk is a useful starting point, but many Sheepadoodles also need training, problem-solving, and interactive play.
Activities to rotate through include:
- Age-appropriate walks and exploratory outings
- Retrieve games with clear start-and-stop cues
- Scent games and scatter feeding
- Food puzzles and stuffed food toys
- Obedience and trick training
- Agility foundations after physical maturity and veterinary clearance
- Supervised swimming if the dog enjoys it and can exit the water safely
Do not turn a growing puppy into a distance-running or high-impact exercise partner. PetMD notes that Sheepadoodles may continue growing for roughly one to two years, depending on size and development. Ask your veterinarian when running, jumping, and more demanding activities are appropriate for your individual dog.
Training and socialization
Start reward-based training as soon as the puppy comes home. Use short, varied sessions rather than drilling the same behavior until the dog loses interest. Poodles often enjoy learning, while Old English Sheepdogs can become bored with repetitive exercises; a Sheepadoodle may need both mental challenge and variety.
Early priorities include:
- Name response and recall
- Loose-leash walking
- Four paws on the floor for greetings
- Settling on a mat or bed
- Handling cooperation for brushing, bathing, drying, clipping, and nail care
- Bite inhibition and appropriate toy play
- “Leave it” and “drop it”
- Gradual, positive alone-time training
- Calm behavior around visitors, dogs, bicycles, livestock, and children
- Preventing chasing and herding of people or animals
The first three months are the primary puppy socialization period, according to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. Carefully expose the puppy to people, surfaces, sounds, grooming tools, car travel, different environments, and suitable dogs in ways that remain positive. Socialization is not forcing a frightened puppy to endure a crowded or noisy situation.
Do not automatically isolate a puppy until every vaccination is complete. Ask your veterinarian how to balance disease risk with early socialization in your area. Puppy classes with appropriate hygiene, visits in controlled settings, and carefully selected adult dogs may be safer options than dog parks.
Grooming requirements
Plan for a high-maintenance coat even if a puppy is advertised as low-shedding. Old English Sheepdogs have dense coats that can mat, while Poodle-type coats continue growing and also tangle when neglected. A short haircut reduces brushing temporarily; it does not make the dog maintenance-free.
At-home grooming
Brush several times a week, and possibly every day for a longer, curlier, or easily matted coat. Work all the way to the skin rather than smoothing only the visible surface. Pay particular attention to:

Introduce a brush, comb, dryer, nail clippers, bathing, and clipper noise gradually during puppyhood. Check nails regularly and clean the ears only as advised by your veterinarian or groomer. Mats should be addressed early; tight mats can pull at the skin, trap moisture, conceal irritation, and make grooming painful.

Professional grooming
Many Sheepadoodles need professional grooming every several weeks. The exact interval depends on coat texture, desired length, lifestyle, and how thoroughly the owner brushes between appointments. Poodle grooming guidance often uses a four-to-six-week interval, but a Sheepadoodle’s schedule may differ.
Ask local groomers about availability and pricing before bringing one home. A missed appointment can quickly turn a manageable coat into a painful shaving job.
Shedding and allergies
There is no such thing as a completely allergen-free dog. Allergens come from sources including dander and saliva, not just visible loose hair. Because the Old English Sheepdog sheds and Poodles generally shed less, Sheepadoodle shedding is unpredictable.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that an F1B, curly coat, or “hypoallergenic” label makes a puppy safe for someone with allergies. If allergies are a concern:
- Spend extended time with adult dogs from the specific breeding line.
- Visit indoors, where exposure is more realistic than a brief outdoor meeting.
- Ask an allergist for advice if reactions are severe.
- Understand that living with a puppy may produce a different exposure pattern from meeting one dog briefly.
Health concerns
There is less Sheepadoodle-specific health data than there is for established purebred breeds. A sensible health assessment considers conditions documented in both parent breeds, the parents’ actual screening results, close-family history, and the puppy’s veterinary examinations.
Hip dysplasia
Hip dysplasia involves abnormal development and looseness of the hip joint and can lead to osteoarthritis. It is influenced by heredity, growth, nutrition, exercise, and body condition. Possible signs include stiffness, lameness, reluctance to exercise, pain, or a bunny-hopping gait.
Ask for documented hip evaluations for both parents through OFA or PennHIP. A commercial DNA panel cannot replace hip imaging.

Bloat and GDV
Large Sheepadoodles may have risk factors associated with gastric dilatation-volvulus, or GDV. In GDV, the stomach becomes distended and may twist. This is a life-threatening emergency. The Old English Sheepdog and Standard Poodle are both among breeds listed as predisposed to GDV.

Seek emergency veterinary care immediately for:
- Repeated unproductive retching
- A swollen or distended abdomen
- Restlessness, distress, or inability to settle
- Excessive drooling
- Difficulty breathing
- Weakness or collapse
Appearance alone cannot reliably distinguish ordinary stomach distension from GDV; diagnostic imaging is needed. Discuss meal frequency, rapid eating, exercise around meals, and whether preventive gastropexy is appropriate with your veterinarian. No feeding routine guarantees that bloat will not occur.
Other inherited and breed-related concerns
Parent-breed screening recommendations include evaluations for eyes, thyroid disease, hips, cardiac health, and other inherited conditions. The Old English Sheepdog Club of America’s health requirements include hip evaluation, an eye examination, autoimmune thyroiditis testing, exercise-induced collapse testing, and—listed as required in 2026—MDR1/multiple-drug-sensitivity testing. Its optional testing includes cardiac evaluation, congenital deafness, cerebellar degeneration, and primary ciliary dyskinesia.
For Standard Poodles, the Poodle Club of America lists hip evaluation, annual eye examination by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist, and at least one elective involving thyroid, sebaceous adenitis, or cardiac evaluation. Its foundation recommends broader testing, including the three Standard Poodle electives and additional DNA testing such as neonatal encephalopathy with seizures and von Willebrand disease.
These recommendations do not mean every Sheepadoodle will develop these conditions. They do mean a breeder should show relevant records for both parents, not merely say that the puppies were “vet checked.”
How to evaluate a Sheepadoodle breeder
A CHIC number can be useful, but it is often misunderstood. OFA explains that a CHIC number confirms that required breed-specific tests were completed and made public; it does not mean every result was normal. Read the underlying reports.
Before reserving a puppy, request:
- The registered names of both parents
- OFA or PennHIP hip results
- Eye examination results
- Thyroid results where relevant
- Cardiac results where relevant
- Named DNA tests and their actual results
- Health information about close relatives, when available
- Vaccination and deworming records
- A written sales contract
- A return-to-breeder or breeder-assisted rehoming clause
Verify the parents independently in the OFA database rather than relying only on screenshots. A responsible breeder should let you meet the mother, provide verifiable information about the father, explain expected adult size using family history, describe coat and shedding variation honestly, raise puppies with structured handling and socialization, and ask detailed questions about your home. Ask what the breeder will do if you can no longer keep the dog.
Be cautious of claims such as:
- “100% hypoallergenic” or “non-shedding guaranteed”
- “No health problems because it is a hybrid”
- “All puppies will be the same size”
- “DNA tested” without named tests and results
- “CHIC certified” without the actual reports
- “Mini” without adult weights and parent information
- “No grooming required”
- “Perfect for apartments” without a realistic discussion of exercise, barking, and alone time
Feeding and weight management
Choose a nutritionally complete and balanced diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage, expected size, activity, and health. AAFCO advises selecting food that is complete and balanced for the relevant life stage; growing puppies have different nutritional requirements from adults. If your Sheepadoodle is expected to exceed about 70 pounds, ask your veterinarian whether a food labeled for growth of large-size dogs is appropriate.

Package feeding directions are starting points rather than fixed prescriptions. Adjust portions according to body condition, growth, exercise, treats, and veterinary guidance. For a large dog, also discuss meal size and frequency, rapid eating, activity around meals, and preventive gastropexy. These measures may influence risk but cannot guarantee protection from GDV.
Who should not get a Sheepadoodle?
This cross is probably a poor match if you:
- Need a guaranteed allergy-safe or non-shedding dog
- Cannot brush frequently or pay for professional grooming
- Work long hours without a plan for companionship, exercise, and gradual alone-time training
- Want a naturally calm, low-energy pet
- Have very young children but cannot supervise large-dog interactions
- Are unwilling to train jumping, barking, chasing, and herding behavior
- Cannot budget for food, grooming, preventive care, orthopedic treatment, and emergencies
Is a Sheepadoodle right for you?
Make the decision based on the adult dog you may have—not only the soft-coated puppy in front of you. Picture a 70-pound adolescent that needs daily activity, structured training, regular brushing, professional grooming, careful socialization, and patient management around children and moving distractions.
If that lifestyle fits, a Sheepadoodle can be a rewarding companion. If you mainly want the appearance of a Sheepdog–Poodle cross without the work associated with both parent breeds, choose a different dog.

FAQ
Are Sheepadoodles hypoallergenic?
No. No dog is completely allergen-free, and Sheepadoodles can shed because they inherit traits from a shedding Old English Sheepdog parent and a generally lower-shedding Poodle parent. Spend time with adult dogs from the specific line before choosing one.
How big does a Sheepadoodle get?
Standard Sheepadoodles are commonly reported at about 16–22 inches and 65–85 pounds, but there is no uniform size standard. Miniature Sheepadoodles are not a regulated category, so ask about the actual parents and adult relatives.
Do Sheepadoodles shed?
Some do and some shed relatively little. Coat texture and shedding may differ among littermates, and an F1B or curly coat does not guarantee a non-shedding dog.
How often does a Sheepadoodle need grooming?
Brush at least several times a week, with daily brushing sometimes necessary. Many Sheepadoodles need professional grooming every several weeks, depending on coat length, texture, and home maintenance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAre Sheepadoodles easy to train?
They are often intelligent and trainable, but they can also become bored with repetitive sessions. Use reward-based training that is short, varied, and consistent, with special attention to jumping, barking, chasing, herding, recall, and grooming cooperation.
Are Sheepadoodles good family dogs?
A well-socialized individual may be affectionate and playful with a family. However, its size, energy, grooming needs, and possible herding behavior require active ownership and close supervision around young children.
What health tests should Sheepadoodle parents have?
Ask for verifiable parent-breed testing, including hip evaluations, eye examinations, and relevant thyroid, cardiac, and DNA tests. Requirements vary by parent breed and registry. Verify records through the OFA database and read the actual results rather than relying on a “vet checked” claim.
The Bottom Line
The Sheepadoodle is a variable Old English Sheepdog–Poodle cross, not a standardized breed with guaranteed size, coat, shedding, or temperament. It may be affectionate, bright, playful, and trainable, but it may also be large, energetic, vocal, herding-oriented, and expensive to groom. Choose carefully by verifying both parents’ health records, planning for the dog’s adult size, starting socialization and reward-based training early, and accepting lifelong coat care.
