A Shih-Poo is a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Toy Poodle. These small companion dogs are often affectionate, clever, and adaptable, but they are not as predictable as an established breed. A Shih-Poo may inherit the Shih Tzu’s friendly nature and short muzzle, the Toy Poodle’s intelligence and curly coat, or a mixture of traits from both.
That variation matters when you are choosing a puppy. Adult size, coat texture, exercise needs, barking, and health risks can differ even between puppies from the same litter. Shih-Poos are generally low-shedding, but they are not low-maintenance: daily coat care, dental hygiene, training, and human companionship are all part of responsible ownership.

Shih-Poo quick facts
| Fact | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Other names | Shih-poo, Shih Poo |
| Parent breeds | Shih Tzu and Toy Poodle |
| Recognition | Not recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club |
| Typical size | Small, but there is no official Shih-Poo size standard |
| Coat | Straight, wavy, or curly; usually low-shedding |
| Exercise guide | About 30 minutes of physical and mental activity daily, adjusted to the individual dog |
| Grooming | Daily brushing and professional grooming roughly every one to two months |
| Broad lifespan estimate | Approximately 10–18 years, with considerable individual variation |
These are broad tendencies, not guarantees. Because the Shih-Poo has no universally accepted breed standard, a breeder’s description of a puppy should not be treated as a promise about its adult appearance or personality.
Appearance and adult size
Shih-Poos are generally tiny to small dogs. However, there is no official height or weight range for the cross. The parent breeds offer only a rough guide: the AKC describes Shih Tzus as 8–11 inches tall and 9–16 pounds, while Toy Poodles are no more than 10 inches tall. The actual adult size of a Shih-Poo depends on the parents, their family lines, and the dog’s sex, nutrition, and overall health.

Be cautious with advertisements promising a precise adult weight. “Teacup,” “micro,” and “pocket” are marketing terms rather than recognized Shih-Poo varieties. Breeding for extreme smallness can be associated with health and welfare problems, including hypoglycemia and dental abnormalities.
The face may resemble either parent. Some Shih-Poos have a relatively short muzzle, while others have a longer, more Poodle-like face. A shorter muzzle can increase concern about heat intolerance and breathing problems, so it is not merely a cosmetic feature.
Coat, colors, and shedding
The coat may be straight, wavy, or curly, and may grow short, medium, or long. Common colors include white, cream, red, brown, black, and combinations of these. There is no official Shih-Poo color standard.

Likewise, a puppy’s coat at eight or ten weeks does not always predict its adult texture. The Poodle parent contributes hair that tends to grow continuously and mat easily; the Shih Tzu contributes a long coat that also requires frequent attention.
Most Shih-Poos shed relatively little, but “low-shedding” is not the same as “hypoallergenic.” Dog allergens are found in dander, saliva, urine, and hair. No dog or mixed breed is completely hypoallergenic. If someone in your household has allergies, spend time with the specific dog you may adopt before making a commitment.
Shih-Poo temperament
A well-socialized Shih-Poo will often be affectionate, playful, people-oriented, and eager to stay close to its family. The Shih Tzu was developed primarily as a companion dog, while the Toy Poodle contributes intelligence and an active, responsive nature. Many Shih-Poos enjoy learning tricks and basic obedience as much as they enjoy sitting beside their owners.

They can also be highly dependent on human company. A Shih-Poo that is routinely left alone for long periods may bark, chew, become destructive, or develop demanding attention-seeking habits. This is not a breed suited to being ignored in a yard or left without interaction day after day.
Recommended Free Tools
Small size does not prevent a Shih-Poo from needing training. Teach household manners from the first week, including quiet behavior, polite greetings, handling of paws and ears, and comfort with a crate or pen if one will be used. Use reward-based methods. Harsh corrections can make a sensitive, people-focused dog fearful or defensive.
Socialization
Introduce a puppy gradually and positively to household sounds, different surfaces, visitors, calm children, grooming tools, car travel, and friendly, appropriately vaccinated dogs. The most important early developmental period runs from birth to approximately 16 weeks, but socialization and training should continue throughout the dog’s life.
Because some Shih-Poos are vocal, include quiet training in your plan. Reward pauses in barking, teach a “quiet” cue, and avoid shouting over the dog; raised voices can add excitement rather than solve the problem.
Exercise and mental stimulation
Most Shih-Poos have moderate exercise needs. About 30 minutes a day of combined physical and mental activity is a useful starting point, not a fixed prescription. Puppies, older dogs, dogs carrying excess weight, and dogs with breathing or orthopedic problems may need a different routine.

Extra caution is needed with a short-muzzled Shih-Poo. Shih Tzus do not tolerate heat well, and a dog with a flattened face may be at risk of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, or BOAS. Noisy breathing, exercise intolerance, gagging, labored or open-mouth breathing, blue gums, or collapse require prompt veterinary attention; collapse or severe breathing difficulty is an emergency. Never exercise a short-faced dog in hot or humid conditions, and do not assume a small dog is safe around water—Shih Tzus are poor swimmers.
Grooming a Shih-Poo
The Shih-Poo’s coat is usually low-shedding but demanding. Expect daily brushing, particularly if the coat is kept long. A short clip makes the work easier, but it does not eliminate brushing or the need for other routine care.
- Brush to the skin. Surface brushing can leave mats underneath, especially behind the ears, beneath the legs, around the collar, and near the tail. Work in small sections and use tools recommended by a professional groomer.
- Schedule regular haircuts. Professional grooming every one to two months is a reasonable general expectation. The exact interval depends on coat length, growth rate, lifestyle, and how consistently the coat is brushed.
- Manage facial hair. Hair around the eyes should be trimmed or otherwise kept from rubbing the eyes. Seek veterinary advice for squinting, discharge, cloudiness, redness, or persistent pawing at the face.
- Check the ears. Floppy ears and long ear canals can make ear infections more likely. Redness, odor, pain, discharge, or repeated scratching needs veterinary assessment rather than home treatment with leftover medication.
- Trim the nails. Overgrown nails can affect comfort and movement. Start handling the paws when the dog is young and trim gradually, or have a groomer or veterinary team do it.
- Brush the teeth. Small dogs are particularly prone to periodontal disease because their teeth can be crowded into a small mouth. Brush with dog toothpaste at least three times weekly as a practical target, and ask your veterinarian about dental examinations and professional cleaning.
Matted fur is not simply untidy. Mats can hold moisture, debris, and irritants against the skin and may be painful. Severe mats may need to be clipped off rather than brushed out. Do not promise that a particular bathing schedule suits every Shih-Poo; bathing depends on coat length, skin health, lifestyle, and veterinary or groomer advice.

Health concerns
A crossbreed can inherit health risks from either parent. The conditions below are reasons for appropriate screening and veterinary care, not predictions that every Shih-Poo will develop them.
- Patellar luxation: the kneecap slips out of position. Intermittent limping, hopping on three legs, or a popping knee deserves an examination.
- Hip dysplasia: abnormal hip development can cause pain, lameness, reluctance to rise or jump, and arthritis.
- Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease: deterioration of the femoral head can cause progressive hind-leg lameness in small dogs and may require surgery.
- Eye disease: cataracts, dry eye, and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) are among the concerns associated with the parent breeds. PRA can cause gradual vision loss and blindness.
- Von Willebrand disease: this inherited bleeding disorder has been reported in both parent breeds. Relevant DNA testing and family history should be discussed with the breeder and veterinarian.
- Dental disease: plaque and periodontal disease are common problems in toy-sized dogs and require prevention throughout life.
- BOAS and heat intolerance: the risk is greatest in dogs that inherit a notably short muzzle. Breathing should never be dismissed as normal merely because the dog is small or brachycephalic.
Keep your Shih-Poo at a healthy body condition. Extra weight can worsen mobility and breathing problems, particularly in a dog with a short muzzle. Ask your veterinarian to assess body condition rather than relying only on the number on a scale.
Feeding
There is no universal Shih-Poo feeding chart. The correct amount depends on the dog’s age, current weight, body condition, activity level, health, and the calorie density of the food. Use a complete and balanced diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage, measure portions, and count treats as part of the daily calories.

Puppies may need three or four meals daily. Adults are commonly fed two or three meals, although the appropriate schedule should be chosen with your veterinarian. Avoid routine supplements unless a veterinary professional identifies a specific need; a suitable complete diet should not require them by default.

PetMD gives a broad expected range of 10–18 years, but a precise, evidence-based average lifespan has not been firmly established for this relatively recent mix. Genetics, breeding quality, dental care, weight, preventive medicine, accidents, and chronic disease all influence longevity. Treat 10–18 years as a broad estimate, not a guarantee.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Finding a responsible Shih-Poo breeder
Since there is no official Shih-Poo testing protocol, evaluate both parent breeds and the actual parent dogs used in the litter. For a Toy Poodle parent, the Poodle Club of America lists prcd-PRA DNA testing, an eye examination by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist, and an OFA patellar evaluation, with the listed minimum age of one year. Ask what additional testing is appropriate for the individual dogs.
For the Shih Tzu parent, do not confuse the AKC page’s “no recommended health tests” entry in its national breed-club testing section with a claim that health evaluation is unnecessary. Responsible breeders commonly consider issues such as patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, and eye abnormalities. Ask for records rather than accepting “the parents were vet checked” as sufficient evidence.
Before paying a deposit, request the parents’ registered names, test certificates, veterinary records, and publicly verifiable OFA results where available. A dog’s absence from the OFA database does not prove illness, but it means you cannot verify a normal result there.
A responsible breeder should also:
- Allow you to visit and see where the puppies and adult dogs live
- Keep dogs in clean, appropriately spacious conditions rather than crowded cages
- Ask detailed questions about your household and experience
- Provide a written contract and veterinary records
- Require the dog to be returned to the breeder if you can no longer keep it
- Let you meet the mother and, where practical, see information about the father
Do not assume that “AKC registered” means the puppy is an AKC-recognized Shih-Poo. The parent Shih Tzu and Poodle may have AKC registration, but the cross itself is not an AKC-recognized breed.

Is a Shih-Poo right for you?
A Shih-Poo can suit a household seeking a small, affectionate companion and willing to provide close interaction, daily training, moderate activity, and substantial grooming. Apartment living can work, but only if you can manage barking, provide daily enrichment, and meet the dog’s toilet, exercise, and companionship needs.
This mix may be a poor choice if the dog will regularly spend long days alone, if no one can commit to daily brushing and dental care, or if you need a dog with highly predictable adult size, coat, or temperament. Families with children should supervise interactions: a small dog can be injured by rough handling even when it is friendly and tolerant.
FAQ
Are Shih-Poos hypoallergenic?
No. Shih-Poos may shed less than some dogs, but no dog or mixed breed is completely hypoallergenic. Allergens come from dander, saliva, urine, and hair. Allergy sufferers should spend time with the specific dog before adopting.
How big does a Shih-Poo get?
Shih-Poos are generally small, but there is no official size standard. Adult size depends on the actual Shih Tzu and Toy Poodle parents and their family lines. Be wary of guaranteed weights and of “teacup” or “micro” marketing.
Do Shih-Poos need daily grooming?
Usually, yes. Daily brushing helps prevent painful mats, and professional grooming is commonly needed about every one to two months. A short haircut reduces brushing time but does not remove the need for coat, ear, eye, nail, and dental care.
Are Shih-Poos good apartment dogs?
They can be, because they are small and usually need moderate exercise. However, they still need daily activity, training, mental stimulation, companionship, and barking management. Small size alone does not make a dog suitable for every apartment.
How much exercise does a Shih-Poo need?
About 30 minutes of combined physical and mental activity daily is a general starting point. Adjust this for age, health, body condition, and energy level. Short-muzzled dogs need particular protection from heat and strenuous exercise.
What health tests should a Shih-Poo breeder provide?
Ask about testing for both parent breeds. For the Toy Poodle parent, useful documentation includes prcd-PRA DNA testing, an ophthalmologist eye exam, and an OFA patellar evaluation. Also ask about eye, patellar, hip, and bleeding-disorder assessments relevant to the individual parents.
The Bottom Line
Shih-Poos are affectionate, bright little companions, but they are not a guaranteed package of Poodle coat, fixed size, or perfect health. Plan for daily brushing, regular dental care, moderate activity, close companionship, and careful monitoring of breathing, ears, eyes, weight, and joints. If you are buying a puppy, prioritize documented health testing and transparent breeding practices over labels such as “teacup,” “hypoallergenic,” or “designer.”
