The AKC breed profile gives a height of 9–10.5 inches, a weight of 9–16 pounds, and a life-expectancy range of 10–18 years. These are breed-profile figures, not guarantees or results from a named population study. The official breed standard describes ideal conformation measurements and allows a broader height range; pets may differ.
What is a Shih Tzu like?
Shih Tzu are small house companions known for friendly, people-oriented personalities. Many enjoy sitting close to their owners, greeting visitors, playing with toys, and joining household routines. AKC characterizes the breed as playful, affectionate, and outgoing.
Individual dogs still vary. Socialization, early experiences, training, health, and genetics influence how a particular dog behaves around children, strangers, and other dogs. A breed’s general reputation does not guarantee that every dog will tolerate rough handling, busy environments, or unfamiliar animals.

History and breed identity
The Shih Tzu is historically associated with China and Chinese imperial court life. The modern breed developed as a companion from Tibetan-related breeding stock, though details of its deeper ancestry are not fully settled. The name is commonly translated as “lion dog,” reflecting the breed’s traditional identity as a small companion with a distinctive coat.
Appearance and coat
The Shih Tzu is a sturdy toy dog with a short-faced expression, prominent eyes, a compact body, and a long, flowing double coat. Coat colors and markings vary. Owners may keep the coat long or choose a shorter “puppy trim.” A shorter trim reduces the amount of hair to manage, but does not remove the need for brushing, bathing, nail and ear care, or attention to hair near the eyes.
Low visible shedding does not mean low maintenance. Loose hair can remain trapped in the coat and form mats. Brush in sections so the brush or comb reaches the skin gently, rather than smoothing only the surface.
Grooming requirements
A long-coated Shih Tzu generally needs daily brushing. AKC recommends a flexible-pin wire brush and advises combing the mustache and topknot daily. A pin brush and comb are also options described by PetMD. Regular grooming helps prevent tangles from tightening into mats, lets you notice skin changes, and helps the dog become comfortable with handling.

- Daily for a long coat: Brush in sections toward the skin without scraping it; comb the mustache and topknot, and keep hair away from the eyes.
- Bathing: Make it part of routine coat care, with frequency tailored to coat length, skin condition, activity, and professional advice. AKC guidance varies by page, so there is no single universal interval.
- Regularly: Check the ears and trim the nails as needed. Ask a veterinary professional about symptoms or ear products.
- Professional grooming: Consider a groomer to maintain a long coat or provide a shorter puppy trim. A shorter cut still needs brushing and routine care.
- Throughout life: Establish tooth brushing with dog-safe toothpaste and arrange veterinary dental monitoring. Home brushing does not replace professional care when needed.
Face care deserves particular attention. Use a clean, damp cloth to gently remove buildup at the eye corners. Persistent discharge, redness, squinting, rubbing, pain, or cloudiness warrants veterinary advice.
Temperament and family life
Shih Tzu are typically affectionate, social companion dogs that prefer being involved with their people. Their size and modest exercise needs can suit apartment living, but an apartment does not remove the need for walks, play, training, grooming, and mental stimulation.

They may fit well into families with respectful older children. Supervise young children and teach them not to pick up, hug tightly, chase, disturb, or handle the dog while it is eating or sleeping. Small dogs can be injured by falls or rough play, and any dog may defend itself if it feels threatened.
Shih Tzu often prefer regular company and may struggle when left alone for long periods. Plan gradual alone-time training and enrichment; if you are away for much of the day, consider appropriate help such as a sitter or dog walker.

AKC says short daily walks and indoor play generally meet a Shih Tzu’s activity needs. Many also enjoy games and training. Their short face and limited heat tolerance call for care in warm weather: avoid strenuous activity in hot or humid conditions, choose cooler times, provide water and shade, and stop if the dog shows distress. A cooling accessory cannot make dangerous heat safe.
AKC says Shih Tzu are not good swimmers. Do not assume a small dog can stay afloat or allow unsupervised access to pools, ponds, or other bodies of water.
Training a Shih Tzu
Use praise, rewards, patience, and short sessions. AKC recommends positive-reinforcement training and early socialization; harsh corrections are unnecessary. Be consistent so that barking, jumping, or demanding behavior is not rewarded accidentally.
Useful training priorities
- Name response and recall foundations
- House-training with a consistent routine
- Calm greetings and safe leash walking
- Gradual practice being alone
- Cooperative handling for brushing, face care, nail trims, and veterinary examinations
Briefly practice touching paws, lifting ears, and inspecting the mouth while offering rewards. Progress gradually and stop before the dog becomes overwhelmed.

Health and safety concerns
Shih Tzu have a short-faced structure. Veterinary and kennel-club guidance identifies possible breathing, dental, eye, and heat-related concerns associated with flat-faced features, but these are risks, not diagnoses for every dog. The Royal Kennel Club notes, “Not all flat-faced dogs will have the health issues described.” Pay attention to an individual dog’s breathing and comfort, and ask a veterinarian about concerns.
Heat, breathing, and eyes
AKC says the breed does not tolerate heat well. Avoid hot, humid conditions and strenuous activity in warm weather. Seek veterinary care for persistent labored breathing, collapse, or suspected heat illness. Prominent eyes merit observation: contact a veterinarian for eye pain, persistent discharge, redness, cloudiness, squinting, or repeated rubbing.
AKC lists eye anomalies and patellar luxation among concerns for which responsible breeders may screen, and also identifies hip dysplasia. PetMD discusses brachycephalic airway concerns, dental crowding, obesity, and patellar luxation. These possible issues are reasons for appropriate veterinary care and thoughtful breeder questions, not predictions about an individual dog.
Dental and routine care
PetMD recommends daily brushing with dog-safe toothpaste and a dog toothbrush, along with veterinary monitoring and professional cleaning when appropriate. Ask your veterinarian how to care for your dog’s teeth and when an examination is needed. Check ears routinely and seek veterinary advice for odor, redness, discharge, or sensitivity.
Food, treats, and healthy weight
Feed an age-appropriate, high-quality diet, provide fresh water, and monitor body condition. Account for training treats in the daily diet. Needs vary by age, size, activity, and health, so ask your veterinarian to help set portions and assess weight rather than relying on a universal calorie target.
Is a Shih Tzu right for you?
A Shih Tzu may suit you if you want a small indoor companion, can provide regular company, and prefer modest activity to demanding outdoor work. The breed can adapt to an apartment when daily care and activity needs are met.

Think carefully if you cannot commit to regular coat care, grooming, dental prevention, heat-aware routines, veterinary care, and training. A Shih Tzu is a companion dog, not a low-maintenance pet to leave isolated for most of the day.
Questions to ask a breeder or adoption organization
Ask for specific health information and observe how the dogs breathe and move. Registration papers alone do not establish that a puppy was responsibly bred.

- Are there known health problems in close relatives?
- What socialization, grooming acclimation, and veterinary care have the puppies received?
- How does the breeder handle health concerns, returns, or rehoming?
- Can you meet the mother and see the dogs’ living conditions where appropriate?
- Does the breeder prioritize comfortable breathing and sound structure?
