Shih Tzu-Poodle Mix (Shih-Poo): Dog Breed Characteristics & Care

A Shih-Poo can be an affectionate indoor companion, but its size, coat, temperament, and care needs vary. Learn about grooming, exercise, health risks, and what health records to request from a breeder.

A Shih-Poo is a companion dog produced by crossing a Shih Tzu with a Poodle, usually a Toy Poodle. It can be affectionate, bright, playful, and well suited to indoor living—but it is not a predictable designer breed with a fixed size, coat, or temperament.

That variability matters when choosing one. A Shih-Poo may have a straight, wavy, or curly coat; may shed very little or noticeably; and may inherit the Shih Tzu’s short-muzzle breathing risks or the Poodle’s need for regular mental engagement. Daily coat care, dental care, training, and companionship are part of the package.

Shih-Poo at a glance

Characteristic What to expect
Other names Shihpoo, Shih-poo
Parent breeds Shih Tzu and usually Toy Poodle
Recognition Mixed breed; not an AKC-recognized breed with its own binding standard
Adult size Usually small, but varies with the Poodle parent and individual inheritance
Coat Straight, wavy, or curly; short, medium, or long
Exercise Moderate; about 30 minutes of daily activity is a reasonable starting point for many adults
Grooming Daily brushing and professional grooming commonly every one to two months
Best suited to Homes where someone can provide regular company, training, grooming, and indoor companionship

These are useful generalizations, not guarantees. Puppies from the same litter can look and behave differently because each inherits a different combination of traits from the two parent breeds.

Appearance and size

Shih-Poos are generally small dogs, but there is no single official Shih-Poo size range. A puppy from a Toy Poodle parent will usually be smaller than one whose Poodle parent is larger, and adult size also depends on the puppy’s individual genetics. Terms such as “teacup,” “micro,” and “imperial” do not identify recognized Shih-Poo varieties. They are marketing labels rather than a reliable size or health classification.

The coat is similarly variable. It may be:

  • Straight and relatively silky, reflecting more Shih Tzu-like traits;
  • Wavy and soft; or
  • Curly or loosely curled, reflecting more Poodle-like traits.

Coat length can range from short to long. White, black, brown, and combinations of those colors are common, but neither color nor texture can be promised simply because one parent is a Poodle. A curly coat is not proof that a dog will be non-shedding or suitable for an allergy sufferer.

Temperament and behavior

A well-socialized Shih-Poo is often affectionate, people-oriented, playful, and responsive to attention. Both parent breeds have a long history as companion dogs, and many Shih-Poos prefer to stay close to their family rather than spend long periods alone outdoors.

Individual temperament still depends on genetics, early experience, training, health, and the home environment. Some are outgoing with strangers; others are cautious. Some are quiet; others alert their owners to every hallway sound. A small body does not prevent nuisance barking, chewing, or attention-seeking behavior when the dog is bored, anxious, or under-stimulated.

Shih-Poos usually respond best to reward-based training. Their small size makes it tempting to overlook jumping, barking, or indoor accidents, but allowing those habits to continue can make them harder to change. Keep lessons short, use small treats, and reward the behavior you want before the dog becomes distracted.

Socialization

The AVMA identifies approximately 3–14 weeks of age as an especially influential puppy socialization period. During that time, introduce the puppy gradually and positively to household sounds, different surfaces, gentle handling, grooming tools, visitors, calm vaccinated dogs, car travel, and being briefly left alone.

Socialization is not the same as forcing a puppy to greet everyone. Give the dog distance and an escape option, watch for fear signals, and pair new experiences with food or play. Until the initial vaccination series is complete, avoid unknown or ill dogs and use only puppy classes, groomers, daycares, and boarding facilities with sensible vaccination and hygiene policies.

Exercise and enrichment

Many adult Shih-Poos can start with roughly 30 minutes of daily activity, divided into a walk and interactive play if that suits the dog. Puppies, seniors, dogs with joint problems, and short-muzzled dogs may need a different plan. Your veterinarian can help adjust exercise for the individual dog.

Useful activities include:

  • A calm daily walk with time to sniff;
  • Indoor fetch or tug with rules for dropping the toy;
  • Food puzzles and scatter-feeding;
  • Basic obedience and trick training;
  • Short scent games; and
  • Supervised play with suitable dogs.

Apartment living can work well, but “apartment-sized” does not mean maintenance-free. A Shih-Poo still needs activity, mental stimulation, toilet training, and a plan for barking. If left alone for long stretches without preparation, some may become noisy or destructive.

Grooming a Shih-Poo

Low shedding, when it occurs, does not mean low maintenance. Curly and wavy coats can trap loose hair and form mats close to the skin. A coat may look brushed on top while dense tangles remain underneath.

Home grooming routine

  1. Brush daily. Work in sections and brush all the way to the skin. A slicker brush and a metal comb can help reveal hidden tangles.
  2. Inspect high-friction areas. Check behind the ears, under the collar and harness, in the armpits, around the legs, and beneath the tail.
  3. Handle the face gently. Keep hair around the eyes from rubbing or collecting discharge. Ask a groomer or veterinarian to demonstrate safe trimming if you are inexperienced.
  4. Check ears and nails. Inspect ears regularly and ask your veterinarian which cleaner, if any, is appropriate. Over-cleaning or using unsuitable products can irritate the ear canal. Trim nails before they become long enough to alter the dog’s gait.
  5. Schedule professional grooming. Many Shih-Poos need a groomer every one to two months. A short puppy trim reduces brushing time and matting but does not eliminate daily coat care.

Do not bathe on an arbitrary frequent schedule. The right interval depends on the coat, skin, lifestyle, and any skin disease. Excessive bathing can dry or irritate the skin; use products recommended for dogs and follow veterinary or groomer guidance.

Dental care is essential

Small dogs commonly develop crowded teeth and periodontal disease. Begin handling the mouth gently while the dog is young and build toothbrushing into the routine.

Brush at least three times a week; daily brushing is better if the dog accepts it. Use toothpaste made for dogs, never human toothpaste. A veterinary examination should include the teeth and gums, and some dogs will need professional dental treatment.

Anesthesia-free “cleaning” is not an equivalent replacement for a veterinary dental procedure. Without anesthesia, a practitioner cannot adequately examine or clean below the gumline, where periodontal disease develops. The AVMA, American Animal Hospital Association, and American Veterinary Dental College do not recommend anesthesia-free dental cleanings.

Health concerns to discuss with your veterinarian

A Shih-Poo can inherit health risks associated with either parent. The conditions below are risk areas, not a diagnosis and not a prediction that every Shih-Poo will develop them.

Concern Signs or practical points
Patellar luxation A displaced kneecap can cause skipping, intermittent limping, or a bunny-hopping gait.
Hip dysplasia May cause stiffness, pain, reluctance to exercise, or an abnormal gait.
Eye disease Cataracts, dry eye, and progressive retinal atrophy are associated with the parent breeds. Cloudiness, redness, pain, discharge, clumsiness, or vision changes need veterinary attention.
Von Willebrand disease An inherited bleeding disorder reported in both parent breeds; appropriate breeding screening matters.
Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease A small-dog hip disorder that can cause progressive lameness and pain.
Dental disease Crowding and small-jaw anatomy make regular brushing and veterinary oral exams particularly important.
Brachycephalic airway problems A Shih-Poo with a short muzzle may have impaired breathing and poor heat tolerance. Noisy breathing should not automatically be considered normal.
Tracheal collapse A persistent dry, honking cough or labored breathing requires veterinary evaluation.

Heat deserves special attention. A short-muzzled dog or a dog with a thick coat can overheat quickly. Exercise in cool periods, provide water and shade, and never leave a Shih-Poo in a parked car—even in shade or with a window open. Seek urgent veterinary help for collapse, severe weakness, confusion, blue or pale gums, or difficult breathing.

What to ask a Shih-Poo breeder

Because a Shih-Poo has no universal breed standard, the quality of the breeding program matters more than a fashionable color or a promise that every puppy will have a particular coat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Ask for the registered names and verifiable health records of both parents.
  2. For the Toy Poodle parent, look for the parent-club recommendations listed by the AKC: patella evaluation, ophthalmologist evaluation, and a PRCD progressive-retinal-atrophy DNA test.
  3. Ask which additional tests are relevant to the Shih Tzu parent, including eye, patella, bleeding-disorder, and respiratory-risk considerations. As of April 2026, the OFA includes Shih Tzu in its Respiratory Function Grading Scheme; the examination can be performed from 12 months of age. Ask whether the parent has a current evaluation and what its result means.
  4. Confirm the age, method, and laboratory or veterinary source of each test. “DNA tested” alone does not mean comprehensively health tested.
  5. Meet the mother, observe the puppies’ living conditions, and ask how the litter has been socialized and handled.
  6. Request the veterinary, vaccination, deworming, parasite-control, and return-to-breeder records in writing.

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals accepts health evaluations and records for mixed-breed dogs; a dog does not have to be purebred or AKC-registered for results to be entered in its database. A breeder who refuses verifiable documentation or relies only on phrases such as “healthy lines” is giving you little useful evidence.

Vaccinations and routine care

Arrange a veterinary examination soon after bringing home a puppy. The visit should cover vaccination, parasite prevention, nutrition, dental care, grooming, socialization, and the timing of sterilization if applicable.

Puppy vaccinations commonly begin at about 6–8 weeks, with boosters every 2–4 weeks until at least 16 weeks. The exact schedule depends on local disease risk, the puppy’s history, and your veterinarian’s protocol. Keep records of every vaccine and deworming treatment rather than relying on a verbal summary.

Common Shih-Poo claims that need a reality check

Claim More accurate version
“Shih-Poos are hypoallergenic.” No dog is completely hypoallergenic. Allergens come mainly from proteins in dander, saliva, and other secretions. Spend time with the specific dog before adopting if allergies are a concern.
“A Poodle mix will not shed.” Shedding and coat type are not guaranteed in a mixed breed.
“Mixed breeds are automatically healthier.” A Shih-Poo can inherit conditions from either parent. Mixed status is not a substitute for health screening.
“A Shih-Poo is low-maintenance because it is small.” Small size does not remove the need for exercise, training, companionship, dental care, and frequent grooming.
“Snorting is normal.” Noisy or effortful breathing may indicate airway disease, particularly in a short-muzzled dog, and deserves veterinary assessment.

FAQ

Is a Shih-Poo a recognized dog breed?

No. A Shih-Poo is an intentional Shih Tzu–Poodle cross, not an AKC-recognized breed with its own binding breed standard. Size, coat, and temperament can vary substantially.

How often should a Shih-Poo be groomed?

Brush the coat daily and expect professional grooming about every one to two months, depending on coat length, matting, and the haircut. Shorter clipping reduces matting but does not remove the need for brushing.

Are Shih-Poos good apartment dogs?

Many can live comfortably in apartments because they are small companion dogs, but they still need daily activity, training, enrichment, toilet breaks, and human interaction. Barking can become a problem if the dog is bored or left alone too long.

Are Shih-Poos hypoallergenic?

No. Individual dogs may shed less, but no Shih-Poo is guaranteed to be hypoallergenic. People with allergies should spend time with the particular dog before making a commitment.

What health tests should a Shih-Poo breeder provide?

Ask for verifiable records for both parents. For a Toy Poodle parent, AKC-listed recommendations include patella, ophthalmologist, and PRCD progressive-retinal-atrophy DNA testing. For a Shih Tzu parent, ask about relevant eye, patella, bleeding-disorder, and respiratory evaluations; the OFA respiratory grading examination is available from 12 months of age.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much exercise does a Shih-Poo need?

Many healthy adults do well with around 30 minutes of daily activity plus play and mental enrichment. Puppies, seniors, dogs with joint disease, and short-muzzled dogs may need an individualized plan.

The Bottom Line

A Shih-Poo can be a loving, entertaining indoor companion, but the cross is less predictable than an established breed. Choose the individual dog—not the label—by checking health records, observing temperament, and planning for daily brushing, regular grooming, dental care, training, and companionship. Treat breathing difficulty, heat intolerance, persistent coughing, lameness, eye changes, and bleeding as veterinary concerns rather than normal quirks.
