Should I Get Rid of My Dog If It Bites My Child?

A dog that bites a child does not automatically need to be euthanized or rehomed, but the child needs immediate protection. Learn what to do next and how veterinary and behavior guidance can help your family assess whether risk can be managed.

Not automatically. A bite means you should separate the dog and child immediately, arrange appropriate medical care, and consult your veterinarian and a qualified behavior professional. Whether the dog can stay, should be rehomed, or may need another humane outcome depends on the bite, the dog’s health and history, whether adults can reliably prevent contact, and local rules.

Do not make the dog and child interact to test whether the dog is safe. Maintain physical separation while you get advice and assess whether a realistic safety plan is possible.

What to do immediately after the bite

  1. Separate the dog and child. Confine the dog in a safe place and keep the child away. Use a method that reliably prevents contact, such as a closed door or secure barrier. Do not use the child’s interaction as a test of safety.
  2. Care for the wound. Apply firm, continuous pressure to bleeding with a clean cloth. Gently wash the wound with soap and water.
  3. Contact the child’s pediatrician if the bite broke the skin. A clinician can assess the wound and advise on infection, tetanus, and rabies concerns. Seek emergency care for a severe wound or bleeding that will not stop.
  4. Get the dog’s vaccination and contact information, and follow local reporting rules. Contact local animal control or police for guidance, especially if the dog’s rabies vaccination status is unknown or the dog appears sick or is acting strangely. Reporting and any required follow-up vary by locality.
  5. Contact the dog’s veterinarian. Discuss the incident and ask whether a qualified behavior professional should be involved. Follow veterinary and local-authority advice about the dog and any required next steps.

Why a child’s bite deserves a serious response

Children are more likely than adults to be bitten, and their injuries tend to be more severe. Many bites to young children occur during everyday interactions with familiar dogs. The CDC reports that nearly 1 in 5 people bitten by a dog requires medical attention.

Do not dismiss the incident because the dog is familiar, affectionate with adults, or has never bitten before. Those details can help explain what happened, but they do not establish that another bite cannot occur. Children may not recognize when a dog needs space, and adults must not expect a child to manage the risk alone.

What the veterinary and behavior evaluation should determine

A veterinarian can assess the dog’s health and discuss behavior concerns. A qualified behavior professional can help evaluate what happened, identify possible triggers, and advise on practical risk controls. No single assessment can predict every future interaction.

Write down the sequence while it is fresh. Include what the dog and child were doing immediately beforehand, the injury, any previous incidents, and what happened afterward. Do not recreate the interaction for observation or use the child to test progress.

The decision should account for the injury and bite pattern, the circumstances, the dog’s health and history, the child’s age and ability to follow safety rules, and whether adults can consistently prevent contact. A professional can help assess the individual situation, but the available guidance does not provide a score or universal rule that decides whether a particular dog can stay.

Can the dog stay in the home?

Possibly, if the adults can reliably keep the child and dog apart and follow a professional safety and treatment plan. Until that plan is in place, maintain physical separation.

Refer to the included instructions to help your dog adjust to the dog muzzles to prevent biting
  • Desensitizing Your Dog to a Muzzle: Many dogs may resist wearing cage muzzles for dogs initially, especially if they've never worn one before. To help them adjust, use gradual desensitization training—start with short periods and reward calm behavior. Over time, your dog will accept it as part of their routine

Possible management tools include closed doors, baby gates, crates, or other confinement methods. Choose tools that work reliably in your home; a gate or crate is a management aid, not a treatment for aggression or a guarantee of safety. Do not leave young children alone with dogs, including familiar family dogs.

Behavior treatment may include environmental management and behavior modification, and in some cases medication. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends reward-based methods. It states that more serious concerns such as aggression, anxiety, and fear require a plan that includes environmental management and behavior modification, and sometimes medication.

Ask the veterinarian or behavior professional to help you consider whether adults can prevent contact consistently, including during ordinary routines and unexpected situations. If the household cannot reliably manage the risk, keeping the dog may not be a practical option.

When rehoming may be responsible

Rehoming is not automatically safer or available. Moving the dog transfers responsibility for managing the risk to another household. Obtain professional advice about whether a placement can be made safely, and follow local rules.

If considering rehoming, disclose the bite and behavior history fully to any prospective placement. Discuss the injury and circumstances, previous incidents, and any relevant veterinary or behavior assessment. Do not conceal the bite or describe the dog vaguely to make placement easier.

A prospective home’s ability to manage risk matters; a child-free home is not, by itself, a guarantee of safety. The sources reviewed do not establish that rehoming is appropriate for every dog that has bitten a child.

When euthanasia may be a humane option

There is no one-size-fits-all rule that every dog who bites a child must be euthanized, and no guarantee that every dog can safely stay or be rehomed. If adults cannot reliably manage the risk, discuss alternatives with the dog’s veterinarian and a qualified behavior professional. The Humane Society of Missouri identifies euthanasia as a possible humane option after alternatives have been considered in cases where a dog and young child may not belong in the same household.

The decision is specific to the dog and family. Consider the injury and circumstances, the dog’s health and history, the feasibility of management, whether another placement is genuinely suitable, and applicable local requirements. Do not treat general guidance as a substitute for an individualized veterinary assessment.

What not to do

  • Do not force the dog and child to interact. Do not make the child approach or handle the dog to test whether it is safe.
  • Do not rely on supervision alone. Keep a reliable physical barrier between the child and dog while you obtain professional advice.
  • Do not use punishment-based methods as a substitute for assessment and management. AVSAB recommends reward-based methods, including for serious behavior concerns.
  • Do not assume training guarantees the dog will never bite again. Treatment and management need to be tailored to the individual dog and situation.

Considering keeping the dog Assess whether adults can reliably prevent contact and follow a professional safety and treatment plan.
Considering rehoming or euthanasia Discuss the individual circumstances with the veterinarian and a qualified behavior professional, and follow local rules.

The bottom line for your family

You do not have to decide immediately that euthanasia is the only answer, but you do need to protect the child now. Separate the dog and child, arrange medical care when needed, and consult the dog’s veterinarian and a qualified behavior professional.

Whether the dog can stay, be rehomed, or may need another humane outcome depends on the individual risk and whether it can be reliably managed. Do not make that decision based on a universal rule or a promise that training will eliminate all risk.

FAQ

Is one bite enough reason to euthanize a dog?

There is no universal rule that every dog that bites a child must be euthanized. The injury, circumstances, dog’s health and history, and whether adults can reliably manage risk all matter. Discuss the individual situation with the veterinarian and a qualified behavior professional.

What should I do if my dog bites my child?

Separate the dog and child immediately. For a bite that breaks the skin, contact the child’s pediatrician; seek emergency care for a severe wound or bleeding that will not stop. Follow local reporting guidance and contact the dog’s veterinarian.
