Adopting two kittens can be a good choice, especially when a shelter or rescue has assessed them as a bonded pair or recommends a companion for a young kitten. It is not the right answer for every home. Ask what staff have observed about these particular kittens, then weigh that against your household’s capacity, resident pets, and ability to provide separate resources and care.
When does adopting two kittens make sense?
A pair may suit your home when the kittens are already closely bonded, or when the shelter or rescue recommends that a young kitten go home with a companion. ASPCA senior director Tina Fried has said, “Pairing single kittens when they are young is important for their socialization.” That is the organization’s guidance, not proof that every kitten needs a second kitten or that adopting two is always better.

Ask the organization caring for the kittens why it recommends a pair. Is the recommendation based on an observed relationship, the kittens’ age, or their individual needs? A bonded-pair designation should reflect an assessment of those animals, not an assumption that every pair of siblings must stay together. ASPCA’s story of Luna and Ketchup, described as bonded and required to go home together, is an example of a particular shelter decision—not a rule for all littermates.
How should you weigh the decision?
- Relationship: Find out whether staff have seen a meaningful bond or are recommending a playmate based on age.
- Household capacity: Consider whether you can provide attention, routine care, and separate resources for two cats. The guidance cited here does not quantify the added cost or workload.
- Other pets: A resident cat or another animal affects how you prepare and introduce the kittens. Plan for separate spaces and a gradual, supervised process.
- Individual needs: Ask the shelter or rescue about medical or behavioral needs that may affect placement, and establish veterinary care after adoption.
What if you already have an adult cat?
Do not assume an adult cat will welcome kittens immediately. International Cat Care notes that some adult cats may take weeks or months to relax around kittens, even if others accept them quickly. Supervise introductions, do not force the cats into close contact, and let each animal choose how much distance to keep.

Provide separate resources in separate locations so the cats can avoid competing or being pushed together. Keep the kittens and resident cat apart when you cannot supervise them until they are getting along.

If other pets live in the home, plan where the kittens can settle separately and how you will supervise introductions. Ask the shelter or rescue what the kittens are used to and whether their needs call for any additional preparation.

Newly adopted pets may be nervous and overwhelmed during their first days. ASPCA advises patience, a steady routine, and not forcing interactions with people or other pets. Let the kittens approach at their own pace, and give them time to adjust to the home and its sounds.

Establish care with a nearby veterinarian after adoption. Ask the shelter or rescue for the kittens’ available health information and discuss their individual needs with the veterinarian rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all timetable.

Found kittens are a different situation from choosing between one kitten and a pair at a shelter. Their circumstances may call for assessment, checking whether they have an owner, help from a shelter or rescue, fostering, or veterinary care. Follow situation-specific guidance from the ASPCA’s advice on found kittens instead of assuming that taking them home is the right first step.
