Should You Change Your Cat’s Food? 6 Signs to Watch For

Coat, energy, weight, digestion, life stage, and itchiness can prompt a diet review—but none proves your cat needs a new food. Learn when to call the vet and how to transition gradually if a change is advised.

If you mean changing your cat’s food, six signs may prompt a conversation with your veterinarian: a dull or flaky coat, lethargy or weakness, a change in life stage, excess weight, ongoing digestive trouble, or itchiness. None proves the current food is the cause. A health problem may need treatment rather than a new diet, so get veterinary advice before switching—especially if the change is sudden or your cat seems unwell.

What these six signs can—and cannot—tell you

Changes in your cat’s coat, energy, weight, digestion, or skin can be clues that its needs have changed. They are not a diagnosis of poor-quality food, food intolerance, or allergy. The same sign can have different causes, and switching foods without identifying the cause can delay appropriate care.

The six signs below are a useful prompt for discussing diet, not a current clinical protocol. PetMD’s six-sign article, by Jessica Vogelsang, DVM, was published in 2014; its list should be read with that age and limitation in mind. PetMD also cautions that food is not a substitute for medical care.

Six signs to discuss with your veterinarian

1. A dull or flaky coat

A coat that looks dull or has flakes may be a reason to review your cat’s overall health and diet. It does not, by itself, show that the food is deficient or that changing it will solve the problem. Tell your veterinarian when you first noticed the change and whether anything else has changed.

2. Lethargy or weakness

Low energy or weakness deserves particular caution. If it begins suddenly, have your cat assessed by a veterinarian before making a dietary change. Do not try a new food as a substitute for evaluation.

3. A change in life stage

A cat’s needs may change as it ages, so a diet review can be appropriate at a new life stage. Age alone is not a diagnosis and does not automatically mean a switch is needed. The right choice depends on the individual cat’s health and needs.

4. Excess weight

If your cat is gaining excess weight or has a noticeably heavier midsection, ask your veterinarian whether its feeding plan should change. A weight-loss diet still needs to provide adequate nutrition; significant obesity warrants veterinary guidance rather than an improvised restriction of food.

5. Ongoing digestive trouble

Chronic flatulence, loose stool, or a rumbly stomach may justify a diet discussion, but these symptoms can have causes other than food. Describe how long the problem has been present and any other changes you have noticed. Avoid assuming that a different food will fix it.

6. Itchiness

Itching can have several possible causes. Food is only one possibility, so itchiness alone does not establish a food allergy. Ask your veterinarian to assess the symptom before choosing a diet intended to address it.

How to choose a food if a change is recommended

Choose with the reason for the change in mind, not just the symptom. When comparing options, consider:

  • Suitability for your cat: whether the food is appropriate for a diagnosed condition and your veterinarian’s advice.
  • Form your cat will eat: a suitable diet is of little help if your cat will not eat it.
  • Transition tolerance: how your cat’s appetite, behavior, and stool respond as the new food is introduced.

For a health-related diet change, get veterinary advice first. A prescribed medical diet may come with specific instructions that differ from a general gradual transition.

How to transition gradually and monitor your cat

Catster’s veterinary-reviewed guidance gives a gradual transition over about two weeks as an example, beginning with a small portion of the new food and increasing its share over time. That is an example, not a universal schedule; follow your veterinarian’s directions if they differ.

  2. Increase the new food gradually over the transition period rather than replacing the old food all at once.
  3. Watch appetite, behavior, and stool as the proportions change.
  4. If vomiting, diarrhea, or refusal to eat occurs, stop the new food and contact your veterinarian for advice on what to do next.

If the change is behavioral rather than about food

If by “change your cat” you mean a change in your cat’s behavior or stress level, do not assume that a food switch is the answer. Cats Protection identifies signs that can include hiding or withdrawing, toileting outside the litter tray, hissing or fighting, excessive lip licking, eating more or less, and reluctance to use the cat flap. A veterinary check comes first because medical problems can also cause behavioral changes.

After medical causes have been considered, look for changes in the cat’s surroundings or routine. Cats Protection lists possibilities such as a new household animal, moving, building work, changes at home, an unsuitable environment, or handling the cat in ways it finds uncomfortable. Identifying and addressing a likely trigger may help; environmental aids should not replace medical or behavioral advice.

When to contact a veterinarian

  • Arrange an assessment before changing food if lethargy or weakness starts suddenly.
  • Ask for guidance before making a health-related diet change, particularly for a diagnosed condition or substantial weight concern.
  • Contact your veterinarian if vomiting, diarrhea, or refusal to eat occurs during a transition.
  • Seek a check for a notable behavior change rather than treating it as proof of stress or a food problem.
