Should You Get a Second Cat to Keep a Lonely Cat Company?

A second cat may suit a sociable resident cat, but it is not a default fix for apparent loneliness. Check for other causes, assess compatibility, and plan a slow introduction with separate resources.

Usually, no—not solely because your cat seems lonely. Cats differ in how much they enjoy other cats, and a new arrival can create stress rather than companionship. First look for other explanations, such as boredom, a change in routine, stress, or illness. A second cat may suit a resident cat with a history of getting along with cats, provided you can make a thoughtful match and introduce them gradually. Even then, friendship is not guaranteed.

Could your cat’s behavior have another cause?

Excessive meowing, destructive scratching, or hyperactivity can look like loneliness, but they may also reflect boredom, frustration, stress, a routine change, or a medical problem. Cats Protection recommends a veterinary check when behavior changes. Don’t treat a new cat as a fix until you have considered those possibilities.

If your cat seems under-stimulated, try a predictable daily routine, short interactive play sessions, and mental enrichment such as food puzzles. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) says, “A stuffed food toy for quiet time, a puzzle for problem-solving, or interactive play (tug, fetch, cat teasers) can go a long way toward preventing boredom-related behaviors” (AAHA, “Enrichment: Supporting your pet’s mental and emotional wellbeing at home”). A cat puzzle feeder is one option for enrichment, not a proven treatment for loneliness.

When might a second cat be a reasonable choice?

Consider adoption when your cat has previously been relaxed and comfortable around other cats, you have a plausible match in mind, and your home and schedule can accommodate a careful introduction and separate resources. This makes a successful adjustment more plausible; it does not guarantee that the cats will become friends.

Base the decision on the individual cats and the household, not on a general rule that cats need feline company. Cats Protection notes that some cats form close bonds, while others are happiest as the only cat. Having accepted one cat before does not guarantee acceptance of another.

Assess both cats and your household

  • Social history and personality: Consider whether your cat has enjoyed other cats’ company or tended to avoid or chase them. Compare temperament and activity level as well as previous experience.
  • Age and health: Account for each cat’s age, health, and mobility. A kitten is not automatically an easier companion; a substantial difference in energy can be stressful.
  • Neuter status: Include it in your assessment, but don’t assume that gender alone determines compatibility.
  • Space and time: You need room for separate areas, places to retreat, and a gradual introduction, as well as time to monitor how both cats respond.
  • Resources: Plan for separate access to food, water, litter, resting places, hiding spots, and elevated spaces.

When to pause

Reconsider if your cat repeatedly avoids or chases other cats, a health or mobility need would make a newcomer difficult, or you cannot provide separate resources and introduce the cats slowly. If a companion cat has recently died, allow time for your cat and household to adjust before deciding whether to adopt again; Cats Protection notes that some cats adapt well to living alone.

How to introduce a new cat gradually

Prepare a separate room for the newcomer and keep your resident cat’s familiar territory and routine as stable as possible. Progress only while both cats remain comfortable; a rushed introduction can contribute to tension.

  1. Set up a separate room. Give the new cat its own essentials and a place to settle without direct contact with the resident cat.
  2. Start with separation and scent exchange. Let the cats become familiar with each other’s scent before allowing them to meet.
  3. Move to controlled visual contact. Proceed only when both cats seem calm. Keep the interaction controlled and ensure each cat can retreat.
  4. Try supervised interactions. Keep encounters brief and supervised at first. Slow down or return to an earlier stage if either cat shows tension.
  5. Seek individualized help if tension persists. Ask a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional for advice tailored to the cats.

Keep access to essentials and escape routes in mind throughout: neither cat should be cornered or prevented from reaching food, water, litter, or a resting place.

How to tell whether the cats are comfortable together

Look beyond whether they fight. Seeking each other out, grooming, rubbing, and sleeping in contact are signs of affiliation. Hissing, swiping, fighting, avoidance, staring, or blocking access to essentials are warning signs. Cats may live in the same home without forming a friendship, and tension can be present even when there is little overt conflict.

AAHA’s 2024 article summarizing the 2024 AAFP Intercat Tension Guidelines reports that 73% of caregivers in a survey of over 2,000 cats said intercat tension began with the introduction of a new cat. That figure describes the caregivers surveyed; it is a reason to take introductions seriously, not a prediction that tension will occur in every household (AAHA NewStat, 2024).

Set up resources so cats can use them separately

Distribute food and water points, litter facilities, resting places, hiding spots, and vertical spaces around the home. Separate access helps reduce competition and gives each cat options to retreat. AAHA describes one litter box per cat plus one extra as a rule of thumb. Make sure resources and routes to them are not positioned so one cat can block the other.
