A newly adopted puppy may show fear or stress by crouching, cowering, trembling, freezing, avoiding people or things, holding its ears back, tucking its tail, licking its lips, yawning, panting, or vocalizing. These are possible signals, not a diagnosis: look at the puppy’s whole body and what is happening around it, then give it space rather than forcing contact.
What fear and stress can look like
Puppies communicate discomfort in several ways. Look for a cluster of cues or a change from your puppy’s usual behavior, rather than treating one gesture as proof of fear. The New England Humane Society’s puppy-socialization checklist describes signals involving posture, face, ears, mouth, tail, movement, and voice.
Posture and movement
- A tense or lowered body, crouching, or cowering
- Freezing, retreating, or avoiding an interaction
- Trembling, shaking off, paw lifting, or repeated self-grooming
- Pacing or seeming unusually watchful
Face, ears, and tail
- Avoiding eye contact, staring for a long time, or showing wide eyes
- Ears angled to the side or held back
- Lip licking, yawning, panting, or holding the mouth tightly closed
- A low or tucked tail—which may still wag
Vocalizations
Whining, barking, howling, growling, or snarling may also occur. A wagging tail by itself does not show that a puppy is comfortable, and a growl is useful information that the dog may feel threatened or uneasy. The American Kennel Club’s decompression guidance cautions that punishing a growl can suppress a warning; instead, create distance and consider what triggered it.
How to read the signals in context
The same behavior can have different meanings depending on the situation. Notice the puppy’s overall posture, what happened just before the behavior, whether several cues appear together, and whether the signs repeat. The AAHA veterinary behavior guidance also describes social disengagement—such as turning the head or body away—and hypervigilance as signs associated with anxiety or distress. Body language alone cannot establish whether a puppy is fearful, stressed, or unwell.

What to do when your puppy seems scared
Give space and let the puppy retreat
Pause the interaction. Do not corner, coax into close contact, or force the puppy to meet a person, animal, or object. If it is hiding in a secure place, avoid pulling it out. When you try again, make the situation easier: increase distance, reduce movement, or wait for a calmer moment.
Make home calm and predictable
Set aside a quiet resting place where the puppy can be undisturbed. AAHA’s rescue-dog adoption guidance suggests giving a new dog its own space and mentions a bed or plush toy as possible comfort items. A bed may offer a comfortable place to rest; it does not treat fear.

Keep daily activities simple and predictable, including feeding, toileting, rest, play, and gentle training. The AKC recommends a quiet atmosphere and routine during decompression. Introduce new experiences gradually instead of making every early outing an exposure exercise. Pair manageable, calm exposure with positive experiences, and stop or lower the intensity if the puppy’s body-language cues worsen. This approach reduces pressure; it is not a guaranteed treatment for fear.
How long adjustment may take
AAHA describes the “3-3-3 rule” as a broad way to think about the first three days, three weeks, and three months after adoption: a dog may initially feel overwhelmed or hide, then gradually begin settling and building routines. It is not a measured outcome or a deadline. The Humane Society of Sonoma County likewise describes it as a general guideline and notes that some dogs may take longer—potentially six months to a year—to feel comfortable. Individual puppies and circumstances vary.

When to contact a veterinarian or behavior professional
Contact your veterinarian if fear is severe, persistent, worsening, interferes with basic care, or appears alongside a sudden behavior change or concern about health. A checklist of body-language signs cannot reliably distinguish fear from illness. For adjustment difficulties or unwanted behaviors, AAHA recommends consulting a veterinarian and a certified canine behavior consultant.
