Six of the Biggest Insect Species—and What We Know About Their Roles in Nature

There is no single biggest insect: body length, wingspan, wing area and mass point to different giants. These six examples also show why life stage and documented ecology matter.

There is no single “biggest insect”: the answer changes depending on whether you measure body length, wingspan, wing area or weight—and whether you mean an adult or a larva. These six striking insects illustrate those different records, along with a few well-documented details about how they live. The evidence for their ecological roles is uneven, so broad insect services should not be mistaken for services performed by every species on this list.

Why “biggest insect” has more than one answer

“Bug” is often used casually for insects, though it has a narrower meaning in biology. Here, the term means insects. Size comparisons need a measurement and a life stage: a long stick insect, a moth with enormous wings, and a heavy beetle larva cannot be ranked fairly by one number.

The figures below are reported maximums or records, not the size of a typical individual. Sources also differ: North Carolina State University’s teaching page carries a 2015 copyright date, National Geographic’s comparison was published in 2016, and the Natural History Museum’s Atlas moth page has no publication date displayed in the consulted copy.

Insect Measure Reported figure and qualification
Chan’s megastick Length Possible length of 35.7 cm (14 in), excluding legs and antennae; North Carolina State University, 2015.
White witch moth Wingspan Up to 36 cm (14 in); North Carolina State University, 2015.
Atlas moth Wingspan and wing area About 25 cm (10 in) of wingspan and more than 400 cm² (65 sq in) of wing area; North Carolina State University, 2015. The Natural History Museum reports a wingspan up to 27 cm.
Goliath beetle Mass A large female may weigh more than 100 g (about ¼ lb); North Carolina State University, 2015. National Geographic reports 4.1 oz for a Goliath beetle grub, a different life stage.
Giant wētā Adult mass Up to 2.5 oz, described by National Geographic in 2016 as the heaviest “reliably reported” insect, citing the University of Florida’s Book of Insect Records.
Titan beetle Overall size Smithsonian identifies it as the largest known beetle in the Amazon rainforest and one of the world’s largest insect species; no measurement is stated in the consulted source material.

Six large insects, measured in different ways

1. Chan’s megastick: exceptional body length

Chan’s megastick (Phobaeticus chani) is a Bornean stick insect. North Carolina State University reports a possible length of 35.7 cm (14 in), specifically excluding legs and antennae. Because this figure appears on a university teaching page with a 2015 copyright date, it is best presented as a reported measurement rather than an uncontested global title. North Carolina State University’s “Giants of the Insect World”.

2. White witch moth: an enormous wingspan

The white witch moth (Thysania agrippina) is reported by North Carolina State University to reach a wingspan of 36 cm (14 in). National Geographic also describes it as having the largest wingspan among living insects, placing its range in Central and northern South America; the university page describes Central and South American rainforest habitat. Wingspan is the relevant comparison here, not body length or mass. North Carolina State University; National Geographic, October 15, 2016.

3. Atlas moth: huge wings, but adults do not eat

The Atlas moth (Attacus atlas) stands out for its broad wings. North Carolina State University gives a wingspan of about 25 cm (10 in) and wing area greater than 400 cm² (65 sq in); National Geographic gives a wing area of 62 sq in. The Natural History Museum reports a wingspan up to 27 cm. These are figures from different accounts, not a single standardized measurement. North Carolina State University; National Geographic; Natural History Museum, “Spotlight: the atlas moth”.

Its life cycle offers a more surprising detail than size alone. Wild caterpillars eat leaves including cinnamon, citrus, guava and Jamaican cherry, and can grow up to 12 cm long. They spin strong brown silk, called fagara, for their cocoons. Adults do not feed after emerging: their vestigial proboscis does not function. The museum also describes a defensive display in which a moth drops, writhes and slowly flaps its wings, imitating a snake’s head and neck. Natural History Museum.

4. Goliath beetle: separate the adult from the grub

A large female Goliath beetle (Goliathus giganteus) may weigh more than 100 g (about ¼ lb), according to North Carolina State University’s 2015 page, which places the beetle in the African Congo rainforest. National Geographic reports a 4.1 oz record for a Goliath beetle grub. That larval figure must not be presented as the mass of an adult beetle. National Geographic’s 2016 article points readers to secondary references for its records, so its figure is best treated as a published comparison rather than a freshly verified record. North Carolina State University; National Geographic.

5. Giant wētā: a heavyweight adult

Giant wētā are native to New Zealand. National Geographic describes an individual weighing up to 2.5 oz as the heaviest “reliably reported” insect, citing the University of Florida’s Book of Insect Records. That qualification matters: the figure is not a claim that every giant wētā reaches that weight, and it should be compared with adult mass rather than a beetle grub’s. National Geographic, October 15, 2016.

6. Titan beetle: a rainforest giant with limited species-level detail

The titan beetle (Titanus giganteus) is identified by the Smithsonian as the largest known beetle in the Amazon rainforest and one of the largest insect species in the world. The available Smithsonian material does not state a measurement for that claim. Its broader beetle resource explains that beetles as a group occupy varied habitats and include plant feeders, predators, scavengers and parasites, but it does not establish which of those roles belongs to titan beetles. Smithsonian, “Beetles (Coleoptera)”; Smithsonian, “Titan Beetle”.

What these giants do in nature—and what is not established

Insects as a whole help shape ecosystems in several ways. The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History describes insects as pollinators, food for other animals and cleaners of waste. Those are broad group-level roles, not a checklist that can be assigned to every large insect named here. Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, “What Is an Insect?”

The clearest species-level example in these sources is the Atlas moth: its caterpillars eat leaves, while adults do not feed. That means it would be inaccurate to claim adult Atlas moths pollinate flowers on the basis of this evidence. For the white witch moth, Chan’s megastick and giant wētā, the cited material supports size and basic distribution more clearly than particular ecosystem services. The titan beetle’s specific ecological role is likewise not established by the group-wide facts about beetles. A careful account distinguishes documented life history from plausible but unverified ecological functions.

Why the Atlas moth’s adult stage is unusual

Many readers expect a giant moth to feed as an adult, but the Atlas moth’s adult stage is brief and non-feeding: it emerges with a non-functional proboscis. The caterpillar stage, rather than the adult, is the feeding stage described by the Natural History Museum. The museum’s account also explains the moth’s defensive wing display and its fagara silk cocoons, making it one of the better-documented natural-history examples among these six. The museum quotes Luke Brown, manager of its former butterfly house: “It is impossible not to be fascinated by the atlas moth. This is due to its beauty, the detail on its wings, and its sheer size at every stage of its life cycle.” Natural History Museum.
