Smack is a raw dehydrated cat food sold in a scoop-and-serve format. Its Pacific Fish Feast recipe lists salmon, herring, rockfish, pork heart and pork liver, and the manufacturer says it is formulated to meet the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages. That is a promising starting point, but it is a manufacturer claim about one recipe. Whether a specific bag is complete and balanced for your cat depends on the nutritional adequacy statement printed on that bag, and on the life stage it names.
What Smack is and how it is served
Smack says it has made raw dehydrated food for dogs and cats since 2007. The format is scoop-and-serve: you measure the dry product, add water as the directions instruct, and feed it. The company states that no freezer or thawing is needed. These are descriptions from Smack’s own website and cat article, not assessments by an independent laboratory or veterinary body, so treat them as the brand’s account of its product.
The Pacific Fish Feast recipe
Pacific Fish Feast is a named Smack cat recipe, and its official product page lists the following animal ingredients:
- Salmon
- Herring
- Rockfish
- Pork heart
- Pork liver
The same page states that the recipe is formulated to meet AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages. Note that this applies to Pacific Fish Feast specifically. Smack’s other cat recipes may differ in ingredients, labeling and formulation basis, so check each one separately rather than assuming the claim carries across the line.

Is it complete and balanced?
The word “complete” on a cat food label means something specific, and it is worth knowing how the claim is supported. A complete and balanced statement can rest on one of two bases: the food’s formula meets AAFCO’s nutrient profiles, or the food was tested in a feeding trial. The FDA and AAFCO both describe these two routes. A label that says “formulated to meet” the profiles is a different claim from one that says the food was tested by feeding trials, even if both are described as complete.
To check a bag or pouch of Smack yourself:
- Find the nutritional adequacy statement, usually on the main display panel or the information panel. AAFCO describes it as “perhaps the most important part of a pet food label.”
- Confirm the life stage it names. “All life stages,” “growth,” “maintenance” and “gestation or lactation” are not interchangeable. A kitten needs a growth-stage statement; a senior cat on a maintenance-only food may need a different choice.
- Note whether the statement cites nutrient profiles or a feeding trial. Both are legitimate, but they answer different questions.
- Compare the ingredient list on that exact package with the Pacific Fish Feast ingredients above. If the label differs, the label governs.
- If your cat has a medical condition such as kidney disease, diabetes or urinary problems, ask your veterinarian whether a complete-and-balanced general diet is appropriate before switching.
Raw food safety
AAFCO warns that raw or undercooked pet food can carry bacterial cross-contamination risks and recommends the same safe-handling practices used for raw animal products. Because Smack is a raw format, these practices matter as much as the ingredient list:

- Wash hands with soap and water after preparing food and after handling the bowl or dry product.
- Use a dedicated scoop and clean feeding bowls after each meal, not only when they look dirty.
- Do not leave prepared food out for long periods. Discard uneaten portions rather than storing them for the next meal, following the rehydration directions on the package.
- Keep food preparation areas away from kitchen counters used for human food, or clean them thoroughly after use.
- Take extra care in homes with young children, adults over 65, pregnant people or anyone with a weakened immune system, since they are more vulnerable to foodborne illness.
- Watch your cat for vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy or loss of appetite, and contact a veterinarian promptly if these appear after a diet change.
Company claims and independent evidence
A review of Smack should keep the brand’s statements separate from verified facts. Smack’s cat article describes its offerings in company-authored nutrition and ingredient terms. Those are Smack’s claims. The material available for this review does not establish clinical health benefits for any Smack recipe, and the company’s own pages do not provide independent test data that would support such benefits.
A third-party review reports that Smack’s FAQ states the company has never had a recall. That is the company’s statement, repeated by a reviewer. It is not an independent record of recall history. Before buying, you can check the FDA’s recall listings for pet food and the company’s current statement directly.

What this review cannot confirm
The available information does not establish the full guaranteed analysis or calorie content for every Smack cat recipe, so compare those numbers on the package you are buying. It also does not confirm current retail availability, prices or cost per feeding. Prices and stock change, and the label is the reliable source for both the nutrient information and the feeding directions.
If you are considering Smack, the sensible next step is to read the current label for the exact recipe, confirm its life-stage statement, adopt safe raw-handling habits, and discuss the switch with your veterinarian, particularly for a kitten, senior cat or cat with a health condition.

When you’re comparing Smack to other cat foods, use the same checks for each: the adequacy statement and life stage, the animal-protein ingredients on that package, the serving format and handling requirements, and the price per feeding from a current retailer listing.
