What does this sighting tell us—and what does it not?
It documents one reported snow leopard sighting near Kaza. On its own, it does not identify the individual, establish that the animal was seen again, set a new population record, or show that the number of snow leopards in Spiti has increased. The cited report also does not provide an independent biological assessment of the animal’s age.
How is snow leopard population assessed in India?
A camera sighting is different from a systematic population assessment. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change says India’s protocol, “Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India,” was developed with the Wildlife Institute of India and the Nature Conservation Foundation in consultation with five snow leopard range-state governments. It was launched on 23 October 2019. That protocol provides assessment context; it is not a population count for this individual or a current count for Spiti.

Does winter explain why snow leopards are seen near people?
A Times of India report dated 29 December 2022 about a separate camera sighting near Chicham described winter movement to lower areas while following prey, particularly ibex, as one context for sightings. That report does not establish why the leopard in the March 2022 ITBP footage was near Kaza.
