Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteOn July 7, 2024, British solo rower Tom Waddington found himself surrounded by a large group of whales about 100 nautical miles off Newfoundland. He estimated there were more than 1,000, but that figure was not an independently verified count. The whales stayed around his boat for roughly two hours; at least one struck it, but Waddington and his boat came through the encounter safely.
What happened during the whale encounter?
Waddington was rowing alone across the Atlantic from Newfoundland toward Penzance, United Kingdom, on a planned journey of about 2,000 nautical miles to raise money for Mind, a mental-health charity. During the July 7 encounter, whales swam around and beneath his small boat, blew bubbles and followed as he tried to row away. At least one hit the boat.
Waddington worried that a whale might damage the rudder, a critical concern on a solo crossing. He later described the moment as “I love it, but I’m scared they’re gonna hit my rudder.” The animals eventually moved on after about two hours. Waddington was not injured, and the boat sustained no disabling damage.
Were there really more than 1,000 whales?
More than 1,000 was Waddington’s estimate, reported by NPR, Futurism and The Washington Post in July 2024. Video footage documented the encounter, but the available reports do not cite an independent scientific count. The number should therefore be understood as an estimate, not a surveyed census.

What kind of whales were they?
Waddington’s team believed the whales were long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas). That identification was not established with scientific certainty in the encounter reports. NOAA distinguishes long-finned pilot whales from short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) in the western Atlantic, so the careful description is that the group was believed to be long-finned pilot whales.
Did the whales attack the rower?
The reports describe close contact, following and a strike against the boat, but they do not establish that the whales attacked Waddington. He feared for the rudder, yet the encounter ended without injury or disabling damage. Waddington called it “absolutely incredible” and said the whales had “just come to say hello.” Those were his impressions of the encounter, not a scientific finding about the animals’ intent.

Why was Waddington rowing across the Atlantic?
Waddington, a British ski instructor and solo ocean rower, was making the Newfoundland-to-Penzance crossing as a fundraiser for Mind. His planned route was about 2,000 nautical miles. The whale encounter took place during that crossing, approximately 100 nautical miles off Newfoundland, according to The Washington Post’s July 2024 report.

His coach, Charlie Pitcher, advised him to “be quiet and still.” Waddington acknowledged that this was “exactly the opposite of what I did.” He tried to row away while the whales followed and swam around the boat. The reports establish what he and his coach said about the response, but do not present it as a general wildlife-safety procedure.
