Inherited terrier motivation
A buried scent, rustling animal or interesting patch of soil can trigger investigation. This is especially likely when holes cluster around compost, fertiliser or places where wildlife has been active.
Boredom, frustration or excess energy

Anxiety or escape attempts
Digging along a boundary can indicate an attempt to get out, distress when alone or frustration about something beyond the fence. Treat that pattern as a welfare and safety issue rather than simply a landscaping nuisance.

How do I stop my Staffy digging holes?
Use management and teaching together. Blocking access prevents damage today; an approved digging area gives the terrier behaviour somewhere acceptable to go.
- Supervise outdoor time. Stay with your dog while training is under way. Fence off flowerbeds and other prized areas, and restrict access to her usual digging zones.
- Build an approved digging area. Use a dog sandbox or digging pit in a safe, accessible part of the garden. Bury safe items such as approved toys or bones, then praise her calmly when she digs there.
- Redirect, do not punish. Interrupt early and guide her to the pit. Punishment can compromise welfare and may create additional behaviour problems without addressing the reason she started.
- Increase daily enrichment. Add walks, interactive play, short training sessions, sniffing activities and safe chew or food-puzzle toys. Do not rely on unsupervised yard time as the exercise plan for a high-energy dog.
- Remove avoidable rewards. Secure compost, avoid using attractive blood-and-bone fertiliser where your dog can reach it, and repair gaps that make escape digging successful.

When should persistent digging be treated as a behaviour problem?
Seek veterinary advice if digging continues despite appropriate exercise, enrichment and access management, or if it occurs with panic, repeated escape attempts or other behaviour changes.
