Why Prairie Dawn needed space
Prairie Dawn arrived at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary from a shelter preferring the company of other dogs and making clear that she wanted people to keep their distance. Her story, published by Best Friends Animal Society on April 30, 2026, follows the small steps her caregivers used to make interactions with people less demanding.
How caregivers made room for trust
Treat-retreat let her move away
Caregiver Crysteena Tillie described using a game called treat-retreat. She tossed a treat toward Prairie Dawn, then tossed another farther behind her, giving the dog an opportunity to move away and have space. Over time, Tillie tossed treats closer to herself. Prairie Dawn eventually took treats near Tillie’s foot or chair; frozen dog-food balls were a favorite reward for the game.
A long-handled spoon kept food at a distance
Best Friends training and behavior senior manager Kiyo Tamesue offered peanut butter on an extendable spoon. The spoon allowed Prairie Dawn to take food without a person needing to move close. As she became more comfortable, the spoon was gradually shortened.

Quiet reading offered calm company
Volunteers sat in a shady spot and read stories to Prairie Dawn. Tillie said Prairie Dawn would come over, lie down, and relax as they read. “She seems to love it,” Tillie said.

The feature portrays gradual progress through activities that allowed Prairie Dawn to choose distance and approach at her own pace. It does not report a measured training outcome, establish a general protocol for fear of people, or show that the same activities will work for every dog.
