Verdict: Steve’s Real Food’s Quest line offers frozen and freeze-dried raw cat food in several proteins, but an FDA advisory about certain lots with extremely low or no thiamine makes lot verification essential. The FDA’s findings are specific to identified lots, not proof that every Quest product is affected; equally, the available information does not independently establish that a particular currently sold lot has adequate thiamine.
What is Steve’s Real Food Quest cat food?
Quest is Steve’s Real Food’s raw cat-food line. The company lists chicken, beef, pork and white fish varieties in frozen and freeze-dried formats. Its cat-food page describes the frozen diet as a 95:5 prey-model recipe and says the cat foods are formulated for all life stages. Those are company descriptions, not independent nutrition or safety findings. Check the current package for the specific recipe’s ingredients and nutritional adequacy statement, which the company says can vary by product.
The brand describes its meat as human-quality and sourced from USDA-inspected facilities, and its FAQ discusses its sourcing, HPP use and manufacturing practices. These are company claims; they do not establish that a particular lot is nutritionally adequate or safe. The FDA’s lot-specific thiamine findings are especially important context for evaluating the line. See the [product catalog], [Quest cat-food page] and [company FAQ].
Is Steve’s Real Food cat food safe?
There is a serious, lot-specific FDA safety advisory. The FDA says it received multiple consumer complaints about severe thiamine deficiency in cats eating certain frozen and freeze-dried Quest lots. In its testing, all eight lots tested contained extremely low or no thiamine. The agency recommended that Go Raw LLC, doing business as Steve’s Real Food, recall eight lots; at the time of the advisory, it reported that three had been recalled. The FDA also noted the affected products were labeled as complete diets despite the low or absent thiamine. Read the agency’s current advisory and lot table before making a decision about any package.

In a separate announcement dated June 8, 2026, the FDA-hosted company notice reported an expanded recall for one additional lot of freeze-dried chicken recipe: C26022, best-by 1/22/2028. The announcement says customers who purchased the affected product should stop feeding it and return it for a refund or replacement. It also relays the company’s statement that current production uses an updated vitamin premix. That statement does not independently verify thiamine levels in any particular lot. See the June 8 expanded-recall announcement.
The advisory does not establish that every Quest package is affected, and it does not establish that every package outside the identified lots is safe. Retailer stock and lot status can change, so do not rely on a product name, an older review or a general statement about updated production as a substitute for checking the package code against current notices.

What to do if you have Quest food
- Match the product and lot code, as well as the best-by date, against the current FDA advisory and any company recall notice.
- If the package matches an identified lot, follow the relevant notice. The FDA advises owners to consult a veterinarian about whether to continue feeding affected products; the June 8 company announcement says to stop feeding its additional recalled lot and return it for a refund or replacement.
- If your cat has reduced appetite, vomiting, weakness, a downward-bent neck, unsteady walking, falling, seizures or circling, stop feeding the product and contact a veterinarian immediately. The FDA warns that continued feeding of affected lots can cause thiamine deficiency, serious illness and death.
What are the ingredients in Quest cat food now?
Ingredient panels may differ from older product descriptions. Steve’s Real Food says it began adding an interim vitamin pack in April 2026. The company says the pack includes some synthetic ingredients, that updated ingredients should appear on current packages through a printed or stickered label, and that the temporary blend is in place while it develops a whole-food-based supplement blend. Its update dated September 1, 2026 says the final formulation is still in testing and is hoped for in early 2027.
For that reason, assess the package in hand rather than assuming an older online ingredient list describes current food. The company also says the nutritional adequacy statement can vary among formulas. Read the statement and ingredients on the exact recipe and package, and do not interpret a brand-wide all-life-stages description as confirmation that every formula or lot has the same adequacy statement. The company’s temporary ingredient-change notice provides its update and explanation.

Frozen or freeze-dried: which format fits your routine?
The main practical difference is storage and preparation. Both formats require following the product’s handling instructions, but frozen food needs refrigerator thawing while freeze-dried food is rehydrated before serving.
| Format | Preparation and handling described by the company | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Frozen nuggets | Thaw portions in the refrigerator. Remove uneaten food after one hour; refrigerate it in an airtight container and re-feed within 24–48 hours. | Requires freezer space and advance thawing. |
| Freeze-dried | Scoop a portion, rehydrate with warm water, and wash the bowl with soap and water before the next meal. | Does not require thawing, but does require rehydration and bowl washing. |
These are the company’s general instructions; follow the directions on the specific package. See its cat-food page for format and handling details.

Is Quest complete and balanced for your cat?
The company says its cat foods are formulated for all life stages, but it also says nutritional adequacy statements vary by formula. The package statement for the exact recipe is therefore more useful than the line-wide description. The FDA’s finding that affected lots were labeled as complete diets despite extremely low or no thiamine is a reminder that a label claim does not resolve a safety issue associated with a specific lot.
If your cat has a medical condition, is pregnant or growing, or needs a prescribed diet, discuss a diet change with your veterinarian. This review does not establish the suitability of any recipe for an individual cat.

How much should you feed?
Steve’s Real Food gives a general guideline of 2.5% of a cat’s body weight, while noting that the amount varies with age, weight and activity. That is brand guidance, not an individualized veterinary prescription. The company directs customers to its diet-specific calculator and product pages for calorie information. Use the calorie and feeding details for the exact recipe, then adjust with veterinary guidance as needed; a percentage-by-weight rule alone does not account for every cat’s energy needs.
How to compare Quest recipes
Compare the actual packages and current lot notices rather than assuming that recipes in the same product line are interchangeable. These checks make the comparison more useful than relying on a protein name or an old ingredient panel:
- Lot status: Check the product identity, lot code and best-by date against current FDA and company notices before feeding.
- Format: Decide whether freezer storage and thawing or rehydration fits your routine.
- Recipe and label: Compare the protein, current ingredient panel and the specific package’s nutritional adequacy statement.
- Calories and portion: Use the calories for that recipe to estimate daily feeding needs rather than comparing suggested portions without context.
- Cost: Compare current local or online prices per fed day using the recipe’s calorie information. Current Quest-specific comparative prices are not established here, so a reliable price comparison requires checking the listings available to you.
This is a review of brand and regulator information, not a product test: no independent laboratory analysis of current production, feeding trial or firsthand customer assessment is available here. The FDA’s findings apply to the lots it identified and tested; they do not establish the thiamine status of a particular currently purchasable lot.
