Hunting is instinctive, even in a well-fed cat, and home may feel like a safe place to bring prey. The most useful approach is to limit hunting opportunities and offer safe outlets for stalking, chasing and catching. These five options are practical suggestions—not a package formally tested or approved by veterinarians.
Why does my cat bring mice home?
A cat may bring prey home because its home is part of its core territory and feels safe. That behavior does not reliably mean the cat is offering you a gift. Cats may hunt even when they have enough to eat, so feeding more is not a dependable way to stop it. Cats Protection explains the behavior and its territorial context in its guide to why cats bring home prey.

The realistic aim is to reduce opportunities for hunting and give your cat appropriate activities indoors. The available guidance does not quantify how much any one measure will reduce mouse deliveries, and it does not establish a way to eliminate hunting altogether.

Five ways to reduce the chances of your cat bringing mice home
These measures address different parts of the problem: time outdoors, indoor outlets for hunting behavior, access to prey, and a possible collar aid. Choose what suits your cat’s welfare and routine; the suggestions are not ranked by proven effectiveness.

1. Keep your cat indoors around dawn and dusk
Cats and many prey animals are active around dawn and dusk. Cats Protection recommends keeping cats indoors from dusk until after dawn to reduce hunting opportunities. This may not suit every cat or household, so consider your cat’s welfare, established routine and circumstances before changing outdoor access. Its advice on reducing prey brought home describes this timing.
2. Use regular interactive play
A fishing-rod toy can mimic the movement of prey and give your cat a chance to stalk, chase, pounce and catch. Keep sessions short and regular, and let your cat catch the toy rather than ending every chase with the “prey” escaping. Supervise play so your cat does not chew or swallow a non-food toy.

VCA veterinary behavior guidance recommends predatory games with toys a cat can eventually catch. Its article, Cat Behavior and Training – Play and Play Toys, lists Ellen Lindell, VMD, DACVB; Debra Horwitz, DVM, Diplomate ACVB; and Gary Landsberg, DVM, Diplomate ACVB as authors. The guidance states: “As a basic rule, it is best to only play predatory games with toys that your cat can eventually catch and ‘kill’, such as toy mice, pieces of food on the end of string, or balls of rolled-up paper.”
3. Offer food puzzles or foraging activities
Put some of your cat’s normal daily food in a puzzle feeder or food-dispensing toy. This adds an activity that involves seeking and working for food without adding extra calories by default. Make sure your cat still eats enough; enrichment should not displace adequate feeding. VCA’s indoor enrichment guidance discusses food-based activities for cats.

4. Make garden wildlife harder to ambush
Keep wildlife feeders out of your cat’s reach and avoid placing them where a cat can easily hide and pounce on visiting animals. This can make prey less accessible in the garden, but it cannot guarantee your cat will stop hunting elsewhere. Cats Protection includes garden measures in its recommendations for cats bringing prey home.
5. Consider a bell only if the collar is safe
Cats Protection says work by the RSPB has shown that a bell can reduce the number of birds a cat catches. That claim concerns birds; it does not show that a bell stops cats catching mice or bringing them home. A collar or accessory can snag, so if you use a bell, attach it to a correctly fitted quick-release collar. Read the charity’s cat collar safety guidance before deciding.

What to do when your cat brings prey home
Do not shout at or punish your cat. Cats Protection says cats will not understand what they have done wrong, and punishment may cause stress. Handle the situation according to whether the animal is dead, alive or injured.

If the animal is injured
Contact the appropriate local animal-welfare authority for advice. Wildlife rules and available services vary by location.
These steps follow Cats Protection’s guidance for dealing with dead, live and injured prey.
When to ask a veterinarian
Bringing home prey by itself is not identified as evidence of illness in the guidance. Contact a veterinarian if the behavior is unusual for your cat or if its personality or demeanour changes. Pain or illness can affect behavior, as Cats Protection explains in its discussion of cats bringing prey home.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Cats Protection’s 2025 behavior guide says wild cats may catch up to 12 small rodents a day. That figure describes wild cats; it is not an average for domestic cats and does not show how well any of the five measures work. The available sources do not give a specific rate at which domestic cats bring dead mice home or quantify the effect of each approach.
The practical distinction is useful: keeping a cat indoors at high-activity times and managing garden access can reduce opportunities to hunt; play and food puzzles offer indoor outlets; and a bell has a qualified claim about birds plus a collar-safety trade-off. None should be treated as a guaranteed fix.
