Start far enough away that your dog can stay relatively relaxed and take a reward; move closer only gradually while they remain comfortable. If they bark, lunge, or struggle to respond, create more space rather than correcting them or pushing on.
Why does my dog bark and lunge at other dogs on walks?
Barking, lunging, and growling describe what a dog does; they do not, by themselves, explain why. Fear, frustration, leash restraint, and the particular setting can all matter. A dog may react on leash, in crowds, or at night but not in other situations. “Reactive” is a description of a strong response, not a diagnosis and not a synonym for aggression. Barking alone does not establish that a dog intends to bite. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine explains that context and triggers matter; AAHA distinguishes signals such as barking and lunging from contact behaviors such as snapping or biting.

Because the cause cannot be diagnosed from barking alone, focus first on what you can observe: which dogs, distances, places, and situations bring on the response. Note what happens just before the barking and whether your dog can still eat a treat, look away, or respond to you. This record can help you choose safer practice setups and explain the pattern to a veterinarian or behavior professional.
How close should another dog be before I start training?
Begin at a distance where your dog can notice the other dog and remain relatively relaxed and responsive. This is often called working “below threshold”: the trigger is present, but the exposure is not so intense that it sets off the barking. There is no single correct distance; it depends on your dog and the setting. If your dog stiffens, fixates, refuses food, barks, or lunges, increase distance and try again in an easier setup. Cornell recommends starting at a distance where the dog can stay quiet and focused.

What to do on walks right now
Management reduces the chance of overwhelming encounters while you train; it is not, on its own, a way to change the underlying response. Your dog does not need to greet every dog. Choose quieter routes or times for now, cross the street, turn around, or move behind a visual barrier when another dog approaches. Skip dog parks or greetings that your dog cannot handle calmly. Keep your leash secure and give both dogs room; do not test your dog by moving closer to see whether they will bark. AAHA describes avoidance as a way to prevent unwanted exposure while behavior work proceeds.
A gradual training plan for calmer dog sightings
- Set up an easy observation. Choose an open place where you can control the distance and leave if needed. A calm helper dog can make practice more predictable, but do not use a setup that forces either dog into close contact.
- Pair the sight of a dog with a reward. As soon as your dog notices the other dog, offer a small, desirable treat. Use food your dog can safely eat and values; soft, high-value treats can be practical because they are quick to deliver. The goal is for the other dog’s appearance to predict something positive, not to lure your dog closer.
- Reward achievable alternatives. Reinforce calm noticing, turning back toward you, or another easy response. If your dog already knows a simple cue, such as touching their nose to your hand, it can help redirect attention when they are still able to respond. UC Davis describes gradual desensitization, pairing triggers with rewards, and teaching a nose-target behavior.
- Change distance in small increments. Only move closer over time if your dog remains comfortable and able to respond. Keep practice brief and controlled; if stress rises, increase distance or end the session. If barking has started, leave safely and make the next setup easier rather than continuing at that distance.
Small rewards are a training option, not a requirement to feed a particular amount or use a particular product. The ASPCA also recommends tasty treats before passing another dog.

What not to do when your dog barks at dogs
Do not use leash jerks, yelling, shock or bark collars, prong or choke corrections, or forced prolonged exposure as a general fix. These approaches do not teach a safer positive association and may increase distress, especially if fear or anxiety is involved. Flooding—keeping a dog close to a trigger until they stop reacting—is not the same as gradual exposure and can worsen fear. AVSAB’s current position recommends reward-based methods for all dog training, including behavior problems; its 2025 board clarification says the 2021 position statement remains its authoritative view. The Merck Veterinary Manual discusses the risks of punishment and flooding.
Is my dog aggressive, or just reactive?
Those labels cannot be settled by barking alone. AAHA notes that frustration-related behavior can include barking, lunging, and whining, while snapping, nipping, and biting involve contact attempts or contact. That distinction does not make barking harmless in every situation: the dog’s full behavior, history, context, and ability to be safely managed matter. Do not assume either that your dog will bite or that there is no risk.

Ask a veterinarian for guidance if the behavior is severe, new or worsening, difficult to manage, associated with attempted contact or injury, or making safe walks impossible. Seek qualified behavior help for a bite history, rapid escalation, or concern that you cannot keep people and dogs safe. A veterinary behaviorist or reward-based trainer can assess the individual dog and tailor the distance, setup, and management plan. Cornell advises seeking help when owners are having difficulty; AVSAB offers guidance on choosing a trainer.
