Parrot populations in Africa can only be protected where people can show which birds still persist, where they have disappeared, and whether their numbers are moving. Systematic bird monitoring produces that evidence. The African Grey Parrot shows both why the work matters and how difficult it is to do well: field teams have found that counts vary widely from site to site, and the most dramatic published loss estimate covers one country over two decades, not the whole continent.
Why monitoring comes before protection
Decisions about trade limits, habitat protection, and local enforcement depend on knowing what is happening in the wild. The IUCN Red List assessment for the Grey Parrot explicitly calls for monitoring wild populations to determine ongoing trends. That assessment dates from 2018, so any current threat category should be checked against the latest species assessment on the IUCN Red List before it is quoted in the present tense.

What the 2018 Ghana estimate says
BirdLife International’s State of Africa’s Birds: Indicators for our changing environment (2018) reports that the species has declined sharply in parts of its range. The report’s Ghana example is the clearest figure:
“In the past two decades, Ghana alone has lost an estimated 90-99% of its Grey Parrots, with areas that formerly acted as major roosts now standing eerily quiet, depleted by the illegal pet trade.”

Three qualifications apply. The figure is an estimate, not a count. It describes Ghana over roughly the two decades before 2018. And it is not an Africa-wide number. The report names the illegal pet trade as a key pressure in that discussion.
Why this is a monitoring problem
A decline of this size is only visible if someone has measured the same places repeatedly. Without comparable counts, a roost that has gone quiet is noticed by chance, and a regional trend cannot be separated from local variation. That is the gap a monitoring programme is designed to close.

Field methods tested in the 2013 CITES capacity-building work
A 2013 CITES capacity-building report describes attempts to estimate African Grey Parrot populations and test monitoring methods in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Cameroon. It is a project report from that period, not a current survey or a universal protocol. Its methods are compared below.

- Does the method estimate absolute density, or does it produce an encounter or occupancy index?
- How much observer effort, training, and cost does it require?
- Is it suited to the local habitat, the species’ abundance, and how easily the birds are detected?
- Can it be repeated across seasons and years in the same way?
- Can local teams sustain it without outside support?
These are practical criteria for explaining trade-offs. They are not a published standardised scorecard, and the 2013 work does not establish a single best method for every species or habitat.
Why one site cannot stand in for a species
The 2013 project found very wide differences between sites. Density estimates ranged from below 0.5 birds per square kilometre at some surveyed sites to above 30 birds per square kilometre at Lobéké National Park in Cameroon. These are project-site results. They should not be read as a range-wide estimate for the species, and a figure from one locality should not be generalised to the whole range.

Comparisons across sites or years are only meaningful when the protocol, the time period, the observer effort, and the detection conditions are documented. Without that record, a difference between two counts may reflect how the survey was run rather than how many birds were present.

BirdLife Africa’s 2024 activity report describes training 13 community conservation champions in Tanzania’s Tabora and Kigoma regions and equipping them with smartphones for monthly monitoring. The example concerns bird monitoring in general. It does not establish a parrot-specific programme. Its value for parrot conservation is the principle it illustrates: local observers who return to the same places each month can produce the repeated observations that a one-off survey cannot.

Coordination makes monitoring sustainable
Monitoring depends on people who can share methods and data. BirdLife International describes its Africa Partnership as 26 organisations with more than 500 staff and 87,000 members, working through projects in 41 countries (BirdLife International, website page accessed in 2026). For parrots specifically, the IUCN Wild Parrot Specialist Group’s mandate includes compiling population, trend, distribution, threat, and action information for parrot assessments. The specialist group’s mandate indicates that compiling updated population and trend information remains part of its work.
Africa’s wider bird context
BirdLife International’s 2018 review reports 2,477 bird species in Africa, of which 1,400 (57%) are endemic to the continent. It also identifies 1,248 Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, covering a combined area of roughly two million square kilometres, which it describes as about seven per cent of the continent. These totals describe birds across Africa and are not parrot-specific figures.
Where the evidence stops
- No complete inventory of active, long-term parrot monitoring programmes by country and species has been established. Coverage across the continent should not be assumed.
- The 2013 field results are project findings from specific sites and years. They describe methods that were tested, not a current survey.
- The Ghana figure is a historical, country-level estimate from 2018. It does not describe the present status of Grey Parrots in Ghana or elsewhere.
What this means for readers who keep or support African parrots
The 2018 report names the illegal pet trade as a key pressure. The steps below follow from that point. They are general guidance, not findings from the monitoring studies themselves.
- When acquiring an African Grey, ask the seller for written evidence of captive breeding and for any export or import documents. Be cautious of birds offered without paperwork.
- Be wary of claims that a bird’s origin is clear without supporting documentation.
- If you live in or travel to a country with local bird-monitoring groups, consider reporting repeated sightings through an established local or national channel rather than acting alone.
Monitoring is the mechanism that tells conservation teams whether any of these pressures are working. It turns scattered observations into comparable records, and those records are what allow a decline in one place to be distinguished from a continent-wide trend.
