There is no single “Native American” language or naming tradition, and the available sources do not verify 100 Indigenous-language cat names. To choose a language word responsibly, identify the specific nation and language, then confirm its meaning and pronunciation with that community’s resources. If you want a strong or dignified name without claiming Indigenous language roots, the English-language ideas below offer a clear alternative.

Why “Native American cat names” needs a more specific answer

“Native American” is a broad label, not the name of one language. The Bureau of Indian Affairs advises, “When referring to a specific tribe, use the tribe’s full, official name.” Apply the same care to language words: name the specific language and community, and do not present one word as representative of Indigenous peoples generally. The sources available here do not substantiate 100 Indigenous-language names with reliable meanings and pronunciations. Rather than fill a list with guesses or unattributed translations, use verified vocabulary resources for a language-specific choice, or choose an English name inspired by a quality you admire. The English suggestions below are not Indigenous words.

How to verify a language word before using it

  1. Choose a specific language and community

Start with the nation or language you have in mind. Avoid labeling a word simply “Native American,” and do not assume a word from one community applies to another.

  2. Check a community language resource

The Snoqualmie Indian Tribe Culture Department publishes Lushootseed animal names, including a cat entry with audio. The Nisqually Indian Tribe also offers animal vocabulary with pronunciation videos. Each resource is specific to its own language and community: Snoqualmie Lushootseed animal names and Nisqually language resources.

  3. Confirm meaning, pronunciation, and intended use

An animal vocabulary word is not necessarily a personal name. Check what the word means, how it is pronounced, and whether the source supports using it as a pet’s name. Do not call a name community-approved unless the community itself says so.

  4. Ask the relevant language program when appropriate

Policies differ. For example, the Cherokee Nation Translation Department says it does not provide Cherokee names for pets and does not accept commercial translation requests. It specifically excludes “the giving of names in Cherokee for children, family members, pets, etc.” from its services. Do not describe an unsourced suggestion as Cherokee-approved. Housecats were not native to the Americas, and words for domestic cats may be borrowed; a secondary overview raises this as a reason to check language-specific dictionaries and official tribal resources rather than trust an isolated translation. Native Languages of the Americas FAQ.
