Tapirs also swim well, have boldly patterned calves, and help tropical forests disperse seeds. Four tapir species survive today, though their habitats and appearance vary—and three of the four are listed as Endangered, according to the Tapir Specialist Group.
What is unusual about a tapir’s snout?
A tapir’s nose and upper lip join to form a short, prehensile snout. The flexible tip can grasp vegetation, helping the animal reach and pull in leaves and fruit. It may look like a miniature trunk, but it is a practical feeding adaptation rather than a long elephant-like trunk. The Tapir Specialist Group describes tapirs and their biology.
How many tapir species are there?
There are four living species: Baird’s tapir, lowland tapir, mountain tapir and Malayan tapir. The Malayan tapir is the only living species found in Asia; the other three live in Central or South America. Their adaptations differ with their environments.
| Species | Range | Notable feature |
|---|---|---|
| Baird’s tapir | Central America | Young have striped and spotted coats that fade with age. |
| Lowland tapir | South America | One of the three living tapir species found in the Americas. |
| Mountain tapir | South America | A thicker, woollier coat is associated with its high-altitude habitat. |
| Malayan tapir | Asia | Its black-and-white coat makes it visually distinctive. |
These traits are not shared uniformly across all tapirs: the woolly coat belongs to the mountain tapir, while the striking black-and-white pattern belongs to the Malayan tapir. The Los Angeles Zoo’s Malayan tapir species page describes that species’ appearance.

Can tapirs swim?
Yes. Tapirs are strong swimmers, and water can be part of how they move through their habitat. The Los Angeles Zoo reports that mountain tapirs can dive for several minutes and use the snout like a snorkel. That is a mountain-tapir-specific observation, not a measured duration for every species. The zoo’s mountain tapir page gives this account.
What do baby tapirs look like?
Tapir calves are often patterned with pale stripes and spots against a darker coat. The markings help camouflage young animals and fade as they mature. For Baird’s tapir specifically, the Los Angeles Zoo reports a gestation of about 13 months and says young stay with their mothers for one to two years. Those figures describe Baird’s tapirs, not necessarily every species. The zoo’s Baird’s tapir page provides those details.

Why do tapirs matter to forests?
Tapirs eat plant material, including fruit and leaves. By consuming fruit and moving through their habitat, they help disperse seeds; the IUCN describes them as important seed dispersers in tropical forests. That role links tapir survival to forest regeneration. The IUCN library lists its 1997 publication, Tapirs: Status Survey and Conservation Action Plan, authored by Richard E. Bodmer, Daniel M. Brooks and Sharon Matola.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why are tapirs at risk?
The Tapir Specialist Group says three of the four species are listed as Endangered and reports sharp declines in recent decades. Documented threats include habitat loss and fragmentation, agriculture, settlement, fire, hunting, roadkill and contamination. These pressures can remove habitat, divide populations or kill animals directly. The Tapir Specialist Group’s conservation page outlines the threats and conservation context.

There is no single comparable population estimate for all four species in the sources cited here. The Los Angeles Zoo gives an undated estimate of fewer than 2,500 mountain tapirs in the wild; because the page provides no survey year, it should be understood as a zoo-reported estimate, not a current dated census.
