Any cat, pedigreed or mixed, can have tabby markings: the stripes, swirls, spots, or banded hairs that make up the pattern. Once you separate the pattern from the breed, most questions about tabby cats get easier to answer, including what color your cat “is,” which breed it might be, and what its markings actually mean.
What “tabby” actually describes
Tabby is a description of how the coat is marked. It says nothing about the cat’s ancestry, size, temperament, or health. A domestic shorthair, a Maine Coon, and an Ocicat can all be tabbies, and a tabby marking can appear in cats with no pedigree at all. For that reason, it is a mistake to infer a breed or personality from stripes, spots, or color alone.
The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) describes the tabby coat as having two layers of color. The lighter portion is the ground color, sometimes called agouti, and the darker markings sit on top of it as ornamental patterning. The visible result varies a great deal from cat to cat, even within the same pattern type.
The four patterns the CFA describes
The CFA recognizes four tabby patterns. They are described by the shape of the markings on the body, which is why two cats with the same pattern can look quite different in color.

Mackerel
Mackerel tabbies have narrow, roughly vertical stripes running along the sides of the body. This is the pattern most often described as “tiger-like.” The CFA’s May 26, 2026 article on tabby patterns describes mackerel as genetically dominant in its account, with the other patterns treated as variations on that form. That is a simplified explanation from one registry, not a complete genetic model.
Classic (blotched)
Classic, sometimes called blotched, tabbies have broader swirls or whorls on the flanks. Many show a bullseye-like pattern on the sides. Where a mackerel cat looks striped, a classic cat looks like it has been marked with large, rolling shapes.

Spotted
Spotted tabbies have spots or broken markings instead of continuous stripes or broad swirls. Registry recognition and naming can vary, so the same cat may be called spotted in one organization and handled differently in another. Spotting is also one of the less simple parts of tabby genetics (see the section on genetics below).
Ticked
Ticked tabbies are the least obvious pattern. Individual body hairs show bands of color, which gives the coat a finely speckled or even appearance. Markings often remain visible on the face, legs, and tail even though the body looks almost solid. The CFA uses the Abyssinian as its familiar example of a ticked coat.

| Ticked | Individual hairs banded with color, giving a speckled, even look | Face, legs, and tail | Abyssinian (ticked coat) |
Breed examples, and how to read them
Breed examples show that tabby is a pattern that appears across breeds, not a breed in its own right. The CFA’s examples are useful precisely because they are different from one another. The Ocicat is known for spotting, the Abyssinian for ticking, and the Maine Coon is shown in the CFA’s article with a mackerel pattern.
The CFA’s tabby-pattern article also states that the Bengal is currently the only pedigreed breed recognizing the rosetted, or spotted, tabby pattern within that registry’s framework. That is a statement about one association’s recognition at the time of its article, not a general rule. Other organizations may recognize patterns or breeds differently, and a cat’s registered breed depends on the rules of the registry that records it.

Colors: what people usually mean
Tabby describes the pattern, so “tabby” is not a color. In everyday speech, people combine the pattern with a color name, such as brown or gray tabby, orange or red tabby, silver tabby, or cream tabby. These are useful visual descriptions, but they are not formal color standards. Registries name and accept color combinations differently, so a cat that one association calls a silver tabby may be described in other words elsewhere.
Coat color is influenced by several genes, not one. The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory notes that non-agouti cats can appear solid, which means a tabby pattern can be present but invisible. Other color loci and patterns can also mask or modify what you see. If your cat looks solid, that does not rule out a tabby pattern underneath.

Why the genetics are not a simple rule
Simplified explanations of tabby inheritance are common, and they are useful as a starting point. The CFA’s account treats mackerel as dominant and the other patterns as variations, which is a helpful summary. It is not the whole story. Research has identified multiple genomic regions involved in stripes and spots, and the genetics of spotted appearances cannot be reduced to one simple hierarchy. Treat any single-gene explanation of your cat’s pattern as an approximation.
How to describe your own tabby cat
If you want to name your cat’s coat accurately, work through the following steps in order. Each step narrows the description without requiring genetic testing.
- Look at the body, not the face. Note whether the markings on the flanks are narrow stripes (mackerel), broad swirls (classic), spots or broken markings (spotted), or a fine speckle (ticked).
- Check the face, legs, and tail. In ticked cats these areas often show the clearest markings. Their presence or absence helps distinguish a ticked coat from a solid one.
- Identify the ground color. Describe the lighter base color first (for example, brown, gray, orange, or cream), then the darker markings.
- Use the color name only as a visual description. Phrases like “brown mackerel tabby” are accurate descriptions. They are not registry designations unless a registry uses them.
- If you need a breed or registry classification, ask the registry directly. Pattern and breed rules differ between organizations, and only the registry can confirm how a cat is classified.
Common questions that come up
- Does a tabby pattern mean a cat is a specific breed? No. Tabby markings occur in many breeds and in mixed-breed cats.
- Can a tabby pattern change? The pattern is set by genetics, so the overall shape generally stays the same. The visibility of the markings can look different with age, season, or coat condition, but this should not be confused with a change in pattern type.
- Do tabby cats have a particular personality? There is no established link between tabby pattern and personality or health. The pattern tells you about the coat, not the cat’s temperament.
Fun facts worth knowing
- Tabby is one of the most recognizable coat descriptions in cats, but it is also one of the most misunderstood, since it is confused with color and breed all the time.
- The same pattern can look completely different in two cats because the ground color and the density of markings vary.
- A cat can carry tabby markings that are not visible at all, which is why a solid-looking cat is not always a non-tabby.
- Ticked cats can look almost solid from a distance, yet their face and legs often reveal a clear pattern up close.
Tabby cats are a good example of how a coat pattern can cross breed lines entirely. Describing the pattern accurately, and checking any breed claim with the registry that holds the cat’s record, will give you a clearer picture than a color label or a stripe count ever could.
