A tarantula hawk is a large spider wasp best known for hunting tarantulas—not for attacking people or pets. Its metallic blue-black body, orange or amber wings, and long legs make it conspicuous, while the female’s sting makes handling it a bad idea.
For pet owners, the practical rule is simple: keep dogs, cats, and curious exotic pets from chasing or mouthing this wasp. Tarantula hawks are usually defensive rather than aggressive, but a pet that traps one against its mouth or paws can be stung.
What is a tarantula hawk?
“Tarantula hawk” is a common name for several large spider wasps in the family Pompilidae, chiefly species in the genera Pepsis and Hemipepsis. It does not refer to one species, and the insect is neither a bird nor a true hawk. Colorado State University Extension describes the group and its distribution.
Pepsis species are native to the Americas. Hemipepsis species occur in several warm regions outside the Americas. In North America, commonly encountered species include Pepsis thisbe and Pepsis grossa. Older sources may call the latter Pepsis formosa; GBIF treats P. formosa as a synonym of P. grossa.

How to identify one
A typical tarantula hawk has:
- A metallic blue-black or dark body
- Bright orange, rust, amber, or sometimes dark wings
- Long legs suited to grappling with large spiders
- A body that can reach roughly 5 cm in common U.S. species
Wing color is not enough for a reliable species identification. Some species, including P. grossa, occur in different color forms.
In P. thisbe, males generally have straight antennae, while females often have more noticeably curved antennae. This can help estimate the sex, but it is not a substitute for expert identification. The important safety distinction is that the female has the stinger; males do not. The National Park Service describes these identification traits.
Where tarantula hawks live
In the United States, tarantula hawks are most strongly associated with deserts and other warm areas of the Southwest. They favor open, sunny habitats where flowering plants and large spiders are available. You may see them around milkweed, mesquite, western soapberry, and other nectar-producing plants.
The presence of a tarantula hawk does not necessarily mean a tarantula is living in your yard. The wasps can travel to find prey and nectar, and individual species have different ranges and habitat preferences.

What does a tarantula hawk eat?
Adult tarantula hawks primarily drink flower nectar. The tarantula is not normal food for the adult wasp. Instead, a female uses a tarantula—or sometimes another large spider—to provision one developing larva.
The hunting process is specialized:
- The female searches for a tarantula or, in some cases, another large spider.
- She attacks and stings it, causing long-lasting paralysis.
- She drags the immobilized spider to a prepared burrow or nest chamber.
- She lays one egg on the spider and seals or covers the chamber.
- The larva hatches and feeds gradually on the still-living, paralyzed spider.
- After developing, the larva pupates and eventually emerges as an adult wasp.
This behavior is disturbing to watch, but it is not an attack on a pet or person. Males do not hunt spiders; they feed on plant resources and mate. The National Park Service describes the life cycle.
Are tarantula hawks dangerous to dogs and cats?
A tarantula hawk does not normally pursue dogs, cats, or other mammals. The risk comes when a pet steps on, catches, or bites one. A dog that snaps at a flying wasp may be stung around the lips, tongue, or inside the mouth. A cat may be stung on a paw or face after batting at it.
Do not let a pet investigate a sluggish or apparently dead wasp. A wasp can still sting while it is trapped or being handled. Move the animal indoors or away from the insect instead of trying to make the pet kill it.

For reptiles, birds, amphibians, and invertebrate pets, the safest approach is also avoidance. Do not offer a tarantula hawk as food, and do not allow a captive tarantula or other pet to interact with a wild wasp. The wasp may sting, and the interaction creates unnecessary risk for both animals.
How painful is the sting?
The female tarantula hawk is famous for an exceptionally painful sting. Pepsis grossa received the maximum rating of 4 on Justin Schmidt’s subjective sting-pain scale. That rating compares the immediate experience of different stings; it is not a measure of venom toxicity, tissue damage, or a universal medical ranking.
It is more accurate to call the tarantula hawk’s sting one of the most painful known insect stings than to declare it definitively the world’s most painful. The pain is typically intense but relatively brief. A female usually stings defensively when restrained, stepped on, handled, or trapped—not because humans are prey. The published study of the Schmidt sting-pain index provides context for the rating.
What to do if a pet is stung
If your dog or cat may have been stung, remove it from the area and observe it closely. Contact your veterinarian for advice, particularly if the sting was to the mouth or throat, if your pet is very small, or if it has reacted badly to insect stings before.

Emergency veterinary care is warranted for signs such as:
- Difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, or repeated coughing
- Rapid swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Weakness, collapse, fainting, or unusual unresponsiveness
- Repeated vomiting or diarrhea
- Widespread hives or sudden severe agitation
- Pale gums, excessive drooling, or trouble swallowing
Do not give a pet human painkillers or antihistamines unless a veterinarian has told you exactly what to use and how much. Do not try to squeeze, cut, or probe the sting site. Wasps generally do not leave a barbed stinger embedded in the skin in the way honey bees commonly do, so searching for a stinger can cause more irritation.
What to do if a person is stung
- Wash the area with soap and water.
- Apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth to help limit pain and swelling.
- Avoid scratching the site.
- Monitor for an allergic reaction.
Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, chest pain, faintness, severe swelling of the face or throat, severe nausea, slurred speech, or other signs of anaphylaxis. Anyone with a known severe insect-sting allergy should follow their prescribed epinephrine plan and obtain emergency medical care after using epinephrine. CDC/NIOSH stinging-insect guidance covers general first aid.

Instead, bring pets and children indoors or keep them away until the wasp leaves. Never handle one bare-handed, and do not disturb a female dragging a spider or entering a burrow. If wasps are repeatedly entering a building or creating a safety problem, contact a qualified local pest professional rather than spraying blindly around pets and flowering plants.

FAQ
Are tarantula hawks poisonous to dogs and cats?
They are venomous rather than poisonous: the female injects venom with a sting. A sting can cause intense pain and, in some pets, a serious allergic reaction. Keep pets away and call a veterinarian if a sting occurs, especially to the mouth or throat.
Can male tarantula hawks sting?
No. Male tarantula hawks lack a stinger. The painful sting is delivered by females.
What should I do if my dog catches a tarantula hawk?
Move your dog away from the insect and check for paw, lip, tongue, or facial swelling. Contact your veterinarian promptly, and seek emergency care for breathing trouble, collapse, severe swelling, vomiting, or other signs of an allergic reaction. Do not give medication unless your veterinarian directs you.

The female paralyzes a tarantula or another large spider and places one egg on it. Her larva eats the still-living spider as it develops. Adult tarantula hawks mainly feed on flower nectar.
The Bottom Line
Tarantula hawks are spectacular, mostly nonaggressive spider wasps—not predators of pets. Leave them alone, keep dogs and cats from chasing them, and treat any sting seriously if it affects the mouth, breathing, or the animal’s overall behavior.
