Tasmania’s January 2025 Moon Jellyfish Bloom: What It May Signal—and What It Can’t Prove

A conspicuous moon jellyfish aggregation around Hobart raised concerns about marine ecosystem imbalance. Here’s what the event and limited long-term data can—and can’t—tell us.

A large moon jellyfish aggregation reported around Hobart in January 2025 prompted an expert warning that Tasmania’s marine environment may be out of balance. That is a reason to pay attention, not proof of a lasting ecological shift: blooms can occur naturally, and Australia lacks enough long-term jellyfish data to establish a local trend.

What happened around Hobart?

On 23 January 2025, ABC News reported a conspicuous aggregation of moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) at Hobart’s waterfront, with reports of increasing numbers in Storm Bay and along Tasmania’s east coast. The report was updated on 24 January. Jellyfish expert Lisa-ann Gershwin said the species blooms naturally and appears at Constitution Dock each year, but not usually in such numbers. ABC News’s event report did not give a measured population count or percentage increase, so the bloom should not be described as a quantified record.

The report placed the jellyfish appearance after salp blooms on beaches and in bays in southeastern Tasmania in mid-December, followed by a bloom of the bioluminescent dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans. That sequence is useful context, but timing alone does not show that one bloom caused another. ABC’s estimate that the jellyfish might last from a few days until March or April was a forecast dependent on weather and food availability, not a verified account of how long the event ultimately lasted.

Does a jellyfish bloom mean the ocean is out of balance?

It can be a warning sign, but it is not a stand-alone diagnosis. Gershwin described the succession of blooms as indicating that “something’s out of balance in the ocean,” and called the blooms “red flags.” Her interpretation is important, but the reported event by itself cannot establish ecosystem-wide imbalance or identify its cause.

Jellyfish aggregations are also part of natural marine life cycles. In a 2009 summary of research led by CSIRO and the University of Queensland, scientist Anthony Richardson noted both that dense aggregations can occur in healthy ecosystems and that evidence was emerging of more severe and frequent outbreaks globally. That global context does not demonstrate a trend in Tasmania or explain the January 2025 bloom. CSIRO’s 2009 summary is background, not local causal evidence.

What might have contributed to the bloom?

In the ABC report, Gershwin linked jellyfish abundance to several possible pressures: excess nutrients, agricultural and aquaculture runoff, overfishing, and natural upwelling. These are attributed explanations, not measurements that isolate the contribution of each factor in the January event. The cited reporting does not establish a single confirmed cause.

Broader observations help explain why scientists watch changing marine communities, while stopping short of resolving this bloom. CSIRO describes plankton abundance and composition as important to ocean carrying capacity and ecosystem assessment, and reports that copepods normally associated with tropical waters have shifted south to Tasmania in the context of warming and a southward-moving East Australian Current. Jellyfish remain an understudied part of zooplankton. These observations provide environmental context, not proof that warming or current shifts caused the 2025 aggregation. CSIRO’s overview of plankton explains their ecological role.

Another example of change affecting the food web comes from research on the 2015–16 marine heatwave off Tasmania. CSIRO reported that the extreme event altered microbial communities at the base of the food chain, with potential consequences for food availability and fish. This illustrates how environmental disturbances can ripple through marine systems; it does not connect that heatwave to the later jellyfish bloom. CSIRO’s account of the heatwave research covers those findings.

Are jellyfish numbers increasing in Tasmania?

The January 2025 sighting cannot answer that question on its own. Australia’s State of the Environment 2021 assessment said very few long-term datasets were available to track jellyfish blooms, no new datasets had emerged since 2016, and confidence in its national assessment was low. That national data gap means there is no reliable basis here for claiming a persistent increase around Tasmania.

To tell a short-lived aggregation from a sustained change, monitoring would need to bring together:

  • Repeated counts across seasons and years, rather than a single observation.
  • Confirmed species identification and comparable counting methods.
  • Local measurements of nutrients, temperature, salinity, and currents.
  • Other food-web indicators that show whether changes extend beyond jellyfish.

The government assessment describes emerging approaches such as drones, pier- or underwater-mounted cameras, and environmental DNA, while emphasizing the shortage of long-term bloom records. These methods can contribute observations; none turns one sighting into a definitive diagnosis.

Where to find more Tasmania-focused marine science

For institutional information about marine data products and mapping tools, the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies provides a Sustainable Use and Conservation overview. CSIRO’s CONNIE is an open-access ocean movement and dispersal model used in research, including work on disease spread in Tasmania. It is a research resource, not a consumer tool for diagnosing the cause of a jellyfish bloom.
