There is no single best dog food brand for every dog. Choose a specific food that is complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage and needs, and consider the company’s nutrition expertise and quality controls—not just its ingredient list or price.
These ten brands offer different strengths, from broad everyday ranges to fresh and veterinary-channel foods. Check the adequacy statement on the exact product, and ask your veterinarian for guidance if your dog is a puppy, has a chronic condition, or needs a therapeutic diet.

How to assess a dog food brand
Brand reputation alone cannot establish that every product is suitable. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) offers questions to help owners evaluate manufacturers; it does not approve or certify brands. Ask who formulates the food, what qualifications the nutrition team has, and what quality-control and research practices the company reports.
Recommended Free Tools
Check the nutritional adequacy statement on the exact package. In the United States, it should identify the product as complete and balanced for a stated life stage, either through formulation to meet AAFCO nutrient profiles or through feeding tests using AAFCO procedures. A brand’s other products do not inherit that statement.

Purina reports employing veterinarians, nutritionists, and scientists, operating 20 U.S. pet-food factories, and performing more than 100,000 quality checks per day across its network. These are company-reported figures. Ask about the specific food and its adequacy statement rather than assuming every product in the portfolio is alike.

8. The Farmer’s Dog
The Farmer’s Dog offers personalized fresh-food subscriptions. 9. Farmina
Farmina’s U.S. portfolio includes N&D, Ancestral Grain, Pumpkin, Ocean, Quinoa, and Vet Life Canine lines. The company reports a multidisciplinary veterinary and nutrition research team, quality-control laboratories, university collaborations, and research through its Farmina Vet Research program.
Farmina sells grain-free products, but grain-free is not automatically healthier. The FDA reports that it has not established a specific causal connection between diet and non-hereditary dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs, and its reporting has involved both grain-free and grain-containing diets. Discuss a major diet change with your veterinarian.
Best for: owners seeking a broad specialty and veterinary-diet portfolio.

Virbac’s U.S. veterinary nutrition portfolio includes VetBasics and other targeted diets. Its 2026 product guide lists canine maintenance, energy, puppy, sensitivity, and lifestyle-oriented products. Virbac’s nutrition materials emphasize evaluating the nutrient profile of the finished food rather than judging ingredients alone.
Availability varies, and some diets are sold primarily through veterinary clinics. Ask your veterinarian which product, if any, fits your dog’s needs.
Best for: owners working with a veterinarian to select targeted nutrition.
How to choose the right food
- Match the life stage. Select a food labeled complete and balanced for your dog’s stage of life. Large-breed puppies have different nutritional considerations from small-breed puppies.
- Read the adequacy statement. Check the exact package for the intended life stage and whether the product is complete and balanced or meant only for supplemental feeding.
- Consider calories and body condition. Foods differ in calorie density. Use the package’s calorie information as a starting point, then monitor your dog’s weight and body condition with veterinary advice.
- Ask about medical needs. Chronic disease, suspected food allergy, obesity, urinary or kidney disease, and heart disease call for veterinary guidance rather than trial-and-error shopping.
- Look beyond marketing and ingredient order. Words such as “natural,” “premium,” and “holistic,” or the first ingredient alone, do not establish finished-food quality or nutritional balance.
- Check the exact product and lot. Products and adequacy statements vary within a brand. Check recall notices by product name and lot code.
Common dog-food claims to treat cautiously
WSAVA provides manufacturer-selection guidance but does not publish an official list of “WSAVA-approved brands.” Likewise, ingredient order alone does not show digestibility, nutrient balance, or food safety. Corn, wheat, soy, and animal by-products do not automatically make a food unsuitable; evaluate the complete formulation and your dog’s needs.
Grain-free is not inherently healthier. The FDA says it has not established a specific causal connection between diet and non-hereditary DCM in dogs; its reported cases involved both grain-free and grain-containing diets. Ask your veterinarian before choosing a grain-free food without a medical reason.

How to check dog-food recalls
Recall status can change, so check the FDA recall database and the manufacturer’s notice using the product name, lot code, and date. The FDA’s recall database listed a July 2, 2026 voluntary recall of two lots of PEDIGREE High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor wet dog food over potential foreign plastic contamination. The FDA also reported a 2026 Raaw Energy recall involving specified production periods after bacterial contamination findings. Check the current notices before buying or feeding an affected product.
FAQ
What is the best dog food brand overall?
There is no universally best brand. Start with a food that is complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage, then consider the company’s nutrition expertise, quality-control information, and your dog’s individual health needs.
Does WSAVA approve dog food brands?
No. WSAVA publishes guidance and questions to help owners evaluate pet-food manufacturers; it does not approve or certify commercial brands.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I know if a dog food is complete and balanced?
Read the adequacy statement on the specific package. It should identify the life stage and say the food is complete and balanced, or otherwise explain that it is for supplemental or intermittent feeding.
Is fresh or human-grade dog food automatically better?
No. These labels do not by themselves prove that a food is nutritionally complete or appropriate for your dog. Check the specific product’s adequacy statement and consult your veterinarian when needed.
Should I choose grain-free food?
Most dogs do not need grain-free food unless a veterinarian identifies a specific reason. The FDA says it has not established a specific causal connection between diet and non-hereditary DCM in dogs. Ask your veterinarian before making a major diet change.
How should I check whether a food has been recalled?
Search the FDA recall database and manufacturer notices by product name and lot code. Do not rely on brand reputation alone, because recalls concern specific products or lots.
The bottom line
The best dog food is the specific food that fits your dog’s life stage and health needs, carries a valid complete-and-balanced statement, and comes from a manufacturer with meaningful nutrition expertise and quality controls. Compare exact products, monitor your dog’s body condition, and seek veterinary guidance for puppies, chronic illness, suspected allergies, or therapeutic diets.
