Bully sticks differ in thickness, length, calories, and how quickly a dog can swallow the remaining piece, so choose by the individual chew—not just its name or length. This shortlist compares 11 current options by use case and listed specifications; it is based on product information and retailer ratings, not independent laboratory testing.

Ratings, product details, and availability can change. Confirm the exact listing before ordering, and supervise your dog whenever it chews.

The label identifies the chew as chicken-free, gluten-free, grain-free, high-protein, limited-ingredient, and suitable for all life stages and breeds. Those descriptors do not make it appropriate for every dog: a 12-inch stick can still be calorie-dense, and diameter matters when assessing whether a dog can swallow the remaining piece.

2. Nature Gnaws 7–8-inch Spring Bully Sticks: Best for shape variety

The spring shape changes how a dog grips and works the chew, offering a different chewing pattern from a straight stick. Chewy lists this product at 4.6/5 from 219 ratings.

Treat the approximate 7–8-inch size as a range, not a precise measurement. Inspect the actual piece before giving it to your dog, particularly if your dog chews quickly or tends to gulp the final portion.

3. Raw Paws 6-inch Standard Bully Sticks: Best lower-cost standard option

Raw Paws’ 10-count package is a straightforward choice for conventional six-inch sticks rather than a specialty shape or thick power-chewer format. Chewy lists it at 4.6/5 from 197 ratings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Standard” is not a universal thickness specification. Compare the listing’s weight and diameter with the size of sticks your dog has handled safely before.

4. Brutus & Barnaby 6-inch Bully Sticks: Best general-purpose option

This 10-count product is a middle-of-the-road pick for households looking for ordinary six-inch chews. Chewy’s current roundup lists it at 4.6/5.

Verify the exact variant. Pack contents and thickness can differ between listings, so do not assume that a product photograph or the six-inch label tells you whether the sticks are thin, standard, or thick.

Natural Farm Bully Sticks, Odor-Free, (6 Inch, 12 Ounces), Packaged by Weight, 100% Beef Pizzle Chews, Grass-Fed, Fully Digestible Treats to Keep Your Puppies, Small and Medium Dogs Busy
  • 𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗞𝗔𝗚𝗘𝗗 𝗕𝗬 𝗪𝗘𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 not quantity. Quantity of sticks varies from 11 to 14 sticks in each bag, but final bag weight is always 12 Ounces.
  • 𝗕𝗨𝗟𝗟𝗬 𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗦 are great for long-lasting engagement, mental stimulation, efficient dental cleaning, plus coat and skin health.
  • 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗧𝗛𝗬 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗪𝗦 made by Natural Farm without any additives or preservatives from 100% grass-fed, hormone-free Brazilian beef.
  • 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗤𝗨𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗬 that starts with fresh from the farm grass-fed beef, cleaned with pure water (only), slow air-dried and packaged in our own human-grade food facility.
  • 𝗘𝗖𝗢-𝗙𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗗𝗟𝗬 green packaging from “I’m Green” renewable sugarcane polyethylene, recyclable.

5. Natural Farm Odor-Free 6-inch Bully Sticks: Best for odor-sensitive homes

Natural Farm markets these as odor-free, single-ingredient beef-pizzle chews. The company says the beef is grass-fed and sourced from the United States and Brazil, the chews are manufactured in Forest Park, Georgia, and products are lab-tested by batch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Odor-free” is a company claim, not a guarantee that every package will have no smell. Preparation, packaging, storage, and individual perception can affect odor. Manufacturing in the United States also does not mean all beef originated there.

6. Redbarn Premium 7-inch Bully Sticks: Best widely available standard chew

Redbarn’s seven-inch Premium Bully Sticks are available in one-, three-, six-, and 35-count versions. Chewy lists the product at 4.4/5 from more than 1,500 ratings.

Redbarn describes the chew as a single-ingredient beef-pizzle product without chemicals, additives, or preservatives. Reviews offer buyer feedback but cannot establish consistent thickness, safety, or suitability for an individual dog.

7. Best Bully Sticks 6-inch Thick: Best for moderate to strong chewers

This thick six-inch stick is an option for dogs that finish ordinary standard chews quickly. The manufacturer lists approximately 111.3 calories per stick, a minimum crude-protein level of 86.4%, and beef pizzle as the sole ingredient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Thickness may extend chewing time, but choose a piece wider than your dog’s mouth and supervise the entire session. The calorie figure is useful for owners tracking food intake; a bully stick is a treat, not a free-calorie activity.

8. Pupford Engage Bully Sticks: Best for large dogs and power chewers

Pupford Engage is positioned as a thick, single-ingredient beef-pizzle chew for large, aggressive, or power chewers. Chewy lists four-, 10-, and 20-count options and a 4.5/5 rating from 699 ratings.

Rank #3
Canine Naturals Beef and Bully Sticks for Dogs, Odor Free, Medium 4 Count
  • Made with 100% Real Bully: Canine Naturals Beef & Bully Sticks are made from carefully sourced grass-fed, free-range cattle, making them collagen rich and a healthy chew for your dog.
  • Single Protein Source: With only one protein source and made with no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives, these chews are the healthy, safe and great tasting way to keep your dog occupied through chewing.
  • Durable & Long Lasting: Beef & Bully Sticks are a healthy, durable chew best suited for heavy chewers and supports your dog's dental health by helping remove plaque and tartar through chewing.
  • Odor-Free: Our Beef & Bully Sticks are odor-free, while maintaining great taste your dog will love.
  • Size Options: Available in Medium and Large lengths, perfect for almost any dog!

These are approximately six inches long, not 12-inch sticks. Chewy customer reviews also report variation in thickness and occasional disappointment about length. Check the weight, stated dimensions, and product variant before ordering, and assess every stick individually.

9. Pawstruck Straight Bully Sticks: Best for varied long lengths

Chewy’s current roundup lists Pawstruck’s one-pound bag as containing approximately 8–12-inch straight sticks and gives it a 4.5/5 rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Variation is both the attraction and the drawback. A one-pound bag does not tell you how many sticks it contains or how thick each one will be. It is a better fit for owners comfortable inspecting each chew than for anyone needing tightly standardized pieces.

10. Nature Gnaws 5–6-inch Braided Bully Sticks: Best for extra resistance

Braiding combines multiple pizzles into an irregular chew that generally offers more resistance and a different chewing pattern from a straight stick. Chewy lists Nature Gnaws’ 10-count product at 4.2/5 from 120 ratings.

A braid is not a safety upgrade. It can still break down into a small piece, and its uneven shape may make inspection more important. Remove it when the remaining section is narrow enough to fit down your dog’s throat.

11. Chewy Made Standard 6-inch Dog Treats: Best retailer-brand value option

Chewy Made’s six-count standard bully sticks are a practical option for buyers who prefer a retailer brand. Chewy’s roundup lists them at 4.3/5. The current name is Chewy Made Standard Bully Stick; older reviews and images may say Bones & Chews.

How to choose the right bully stick

Prioritize thickness, not just length

A longer stick is not automatically safer or longer-lasting. A thin 12-inch stick may disappear faster—and become swallowable sooner—than a short, thick stick. Best Bully Sticks’ sizing guide recommends thin or standard six-inch sticks for dogs under 25 pounds, six-inch thick or 10-inch standard sticks for many 25–50-pound dogs, and thick, jumbo, monster, or braided products for aggressive chewers. These are manufacturer guidelines, not veterinary rules.

As a practical starting point, choose a piece wider than your dog’s mouth. When comparing a listing, check:

  1. Length or length range.
  2. Thickness or diameter.
  3. Number of pieces and total weight.
  4. Whether the product is thin, standard, thick, braided, or irregularly shaped.

A dog that finishes a standard stick rapidly usually needs more thickness—not simply more length.

Account for the calories

A peer-reviewed study published in the Canadian Veterinary Journal found approximately 54–132 calories in six-inch sticks and 108–264 calories in 12-inch sticks, with substantial variation. Calorie content depends on size, density, and the individual product.

For perspective, Best Bully Sticks lists about 111.3 calories for one of its six-inch thick sticks. Natural Farm says bully sticks average roughly 10% fat and 75–85% protein but cautions they are not low-calorie treats. Reduce other treats or ask your veterinarian how to fit a chew into your dog’s daily intake.

Do not buy one for dental claims alone

Chewing may provide some mechanical scraping, but bully sticks are not listed as accepted edible dental chews by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC). They should not be described as proven to prevent dental disease or remove tartar.

Dogs can fracture teeth on hard chews, and an existing dental problem can make chewing painful. For plaque and tartar control, use a veterinary-recommended dental routine and look for products with appropriate evidence rather than assuming any long-lasting chew is a dental product.

Bully stick safety: what owners need to do

  1. Supervise every session. Do not leave a dog alone with a bully stick. Remove it when it becomes small, sharp, splintered, or narrow enough to swallow.
  2. Inspect before use. Discard pieces with an unusual odor, visible mold, sharp fragments, or damaged packaging. Check variable-size products one stick at a time.
  3. Introduce it gradually. A large amount can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or other gastrointestinal upset. Start with a short session and observe your dog.
  4. Use extra caution with gulpers. Dogs with a history of choking or intestinal blockage may not be good candidates. Ask a veterinarian before offering one to a dog with dental disease, pancreatitis, food intolerance, or a calorie-restricted diet.
  5. Count it as a treat. Bully sticks are not complete and balanced food and should not replace your dog’s main diet.
  6. Clean up carefully. Wash your hands after handling animal treats and clean bowls, mats, holders, and nearby surfaces. CDC guidance notes pet treats can carry germs and recommends regular cleaning.
  7. Store them correctly. Follow the package directions and do not leave a partially chewed stick in a warm, damp place.

Are bully sticks safe?

They can be reasonable occasional chews for some dogs when correctly sized and supervised, but “digestible” does not mean risk-free. Bully sticks can cause choking, intestinal obstruction, tooth damage, diarrhea, excess calorie intake, and bacterial contamination. They may be less prone to splintering than cooked bones, but they can still break into hazardous pieces.

Check current recalls before buying. The FDA reported a recall of Nature’s Own Pet Chews Bully Bites in 16-ounce bags with UPC 739598900750, a September 2027 best-by date, and lots 19379, 19380, 19381, and 19382 after Salmonella testing. The FDA notice said the affected product was distributed in Minnesota and sold through retail stores in Wisconsin. This was not a recall of every bully-stick product; check lot information and current FDA recall notices.

Safety documentation varies between brands. Natural Farm currently describes batch lab testing and production in a USDA- and FDA-approved facility; that claim should not be extended to the other products on this list. The FDA issued a September 24, 2025 warning letter to Supercan Bully Sticks LLC citing the absence of a written food-safety plan and noting color additives in some pet-treat products.

FAQ

How often can a dog have a bully stick?

There is no universal schedule because size, calories, chewing behavior, and health status vary. Treat a bully stick as part of the daily treat allowance, offer it occasionally, and ask your veterinarian for a specific plan if your dog is overweight, has pancreatitis, dental disease, or dietary restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are braided bully sticks better than straight ones?

Braided sticks can offer more resistance and a different chewing pattern, but they are not automatically safer or nutritionally better. Supervise them just as closely and remove the chew when it becomes small or loose.

What size bully stick should I give my dog?

Choose a piece wider than your dog’s mouth and match thickness to chewing strength. Manufacturer guidance commonly suggests standard six-inch sticks for smaller dogs, thick six-inch or standard 10-inch sticks for many medium dogs, and thick or braided products for power chewers. Inspect the individual chew because sizes vary.

Do bully sticks clean dogs’ teeth?

Chewing may provide some mechanical action, but bully sticks are not listed as VOHC-accepted edible dental chews. Do not rely on them to prevent dental disease or remove tartar; use a veterinary-recommended dental-care routine instead.

The Bottom Line

Our overall picks: Woof’s 12-inch sticks suit dogs that need a longer format, Best Bully Sticks’ six-inch thick version is the clearest choice for a denser chew with a published calorie figure, and Natural Farm is relevant for homes prioritizing an odor-control claim and batch-testing information. For everyday value, compare Raw Paws, Chewy Made, and Redbarn by thickness, total weight, and price rather than pack count alone.

Whichever product you choose, select a piece wider than your dog’s mouth, supervise continuously, count the calories, and discard it before it becomes a swallowable stub.
