There is no single healthiest treat for every cat: a good choice fits the cat’s needs, calorie budget, and reason for offering it. Keep treats to about 10% or less of daily calories unless your veterinarian recommends a different plan, and use the cat’s regular food or small measured rewards for training.
The available evidence supports specific dental treats and one veterinary-diet-compatible option, but it does not establish an independently validated ranking of 11 products. The guide below focuses on evidence-backed choices and practical treat types; check current packaging and ask your veterinarian about treats for cats with medical conditions or prescription diets.

| Compatible veterinary diet | Royal Canin Satiety Feline Treats | The manufacturer reports 0.9 kcal per treat and compatibility with its Satiety Support diets. | For compatible diets under veterinary guidance, not a general weight-loss treat. |
| Training | Small pieces of the cat’s regular food | Can help keep rewards within the cat’s usual food plan. | Count the portion as part of the daily ration. |
| Training | Small, easy-to-eat commercial rewards | Small portions are practical for repeated rewards. | Check calories and count every reward. |
| Texture preference | A soft treat the cat safely eats | Texture can be selected to suit the individual cat. | Chewing or swallowing difficulty warrants veterinary advice. |
| Simple human-food treat | Plain cooked, unseasoned meat | VCA includes cooked meats among foods that may be used as treats. | Offer small portions; avoid bones, seasoning, and unsafe ingredients. |
| Enrichment | A measured treat used in a puzzle or training game | Food rewards can support training and enrichment. | Use treats from the daily allowance rather than adding extras. |
| Medical or dietary needs | A treat approved for the individual cat | Veterinary guidance can help preserve a therapeutic diet plan. | No conventional treat is automatically compatible with a prescription diet. |
This is a use-case guide, not a tested ranking. Product formulas, calories, availability, and feeding directions may change, so check the current label before use.
How to choose a treat
A treat is an optional reward, not a substitute for a complete and balanced diet. Choose based on the individual cat rather than claims such as “natural,” “grain-free,” or “high-protein.” Look for clear portion and calorie information, and consider ingredients, texture, age, sensitivities, and any medical diet.

For training, small rewards that are easy to eat can be useful. A measured portion of the cat’s regular food may work, depending on what motivates the cat. Count training rewards, toppers, table food, and other treats together.
VCA, citing Canadian Academy of Veterinary Nutrition authors, advises keeping treat calories within 10% of a cat’s total calorie intake to help prevent excessive calories and nutrient deficiencies. Cornell describes a general 10–15% range; this guide uses the more cautious 10% rule. Your veterinarian may recommend a lower or individualized allowance.
Evidence-backed product options
VOHC-listed dental treats
The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) lists specific feline products for defined plaque or tartar claims. Its current list includes Feline Greenies Feline Dental Treats, Whiskas Dentabites Cat Treats, Purina DentaLife Daily Oral Care Cat Treats, and Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diet Dental Bites. Check the VOHC accepted-products list for the exact product and claim.
VOHC acceptance supports only the listed claim. It does not mean a treat prevents every dental problem or replaces tooth brushing, veterinary examinations, or professional cleaning when needed. Follow the current product label and consider whether your cat can chew the treat safely.

Royal Canin Satiety Feline Treats
Royal Canin reports 0.9 kcal per treat and describes its Satiety Feline Treats as intended for adult cats on compatible Satiety Support veterinary diets. The manufacturer advises consulting a veterinarian. This is not a general-purpose weight-loss recommendation, and it should not be assumed compatible with other therapeutic diets.
Plain human foods and safety
Some cats can have a small portion of plain, cooked, unseasoned meat as an occasional treat. It remains an extra, not a balanced meal. Avoid offering foods with uncertain ingredients, bones, or seasonings, and check with a veterinarian if your cat has a health condition or dietary restriction.
VCA names alcohol, chocolate, macadamia nuts, garlic, onions, grapes, raisins, salty snack foods, and foods containing xylitol among items to avoid. NC State’s veterinary resource also identifies hazards including caffeine and yeast dough. When in doubt, do not offer the food.
Cats with medical conditions or special diets
Ask the veterinarian before adding treats if your cat has a medical condition, food sensitivity, or prescription diet. A treat that is low in calories, limited in ingredients, or marketed for a particular benefit is not automatically appropriate for a cat with kidney or heart disease, allergies, or another therapeutic need. During a prescribed food trial, follow the veterinary team’s instructions about treats and flavored products.

- Check calories and serving directions on each product’s current package.

What are healthy treats for a cat?
Healthy treats are those that suit the individual cat, fit its calorie plan, and do not conflict with its diet or health needs. Use small measured portions, and check with a veterinarian for medical or prescription-diet concerns.
What are the best treats for training?
Choose a small, easy-to-eat reward your cat values. A measured portion of its regular food may work. Count all rewards toward the day’s food and treat allowance.
Do dental treats replace brushing?
No. VOHC-listed treats have specific accepted plaque or tartar claims, but they do not replace brushing or veterinary dental care.

Can I give treats to a cat on a prescription diet?
Ask the veterinarian or veterinary care team first. A treat is not automatically compatible just because it is made by a familiar brand or marketed for a health benefit.
How many calories should come from treats?
A general guideline is to keep treats within 10% of daily calories. Treat this as a ceiling, not a target; your veterinarian may recommend less or provide an individualized plan.
The bottom line
The best treat is one your cat can safely eat that fits its diet and calorie allowance. For a specific dental claim, verify the exact product on the VOHC list; for a therapeutic diet or medical condition, ask your veterinarian before adding treats.
