A tiny, transparent box jellyfish found in a brackish shrimp pond in Hong Kong was reported in 2023 to have 24 eyes and 12 tentacles. The report also described it as related to the Australian box jellyfish, Chironex fleckeri—but that relationship does not show that the Hong Kong animal has equally potent venom or poses the same danger to people.
What is the 24-eyed creature?
It is a box jellyfish, a member of the group known as cubozoans. A 2023 Live Science report described the small, transparent animal as having 24 eyes and 12 tentacles.
The report called it newly discovered, but the exact scientific name and a primary taxonomic description could not be verified from the available sources. A 2022 paper on Carybdea brevipedalia and cubozoan evolutionary relationships does not establish that this is the Hong Kong animal’s identity.
Where was it found?
The reported find was in a brackish shrimp pond in Hong Kong. Brackish water is a mix of fresh and salt water; the location is more specific than simply saying the jellyfish was found in the open sea. The report does not establish that the animal is common throughout Hong Kong or that it is restricted to shrimp ponds.

What does “24 eyes” mean?
The 24-eye count describes the animal’s anatomy, not a population estimate or a measure of its eyesight. In box jellyfish, eyes are grouped in sensory structures called rhopalia. Some cubozoans have a varied set of eyes, including eyes with lenses.
Research on the box jellyfish Tripedalia cystophora has linked its lensed eyes to obstacle detection and cues in its mangrove habitat, as described in National Geographic’s overview of animal eyes. Those findings provide context about box jellyfish vision; they do not demonstrate what the Hong Kong animal’s eyes do.

Is it as venomous as the Australian box jellyfish?
That has not been established. The 2023 report describes the Hong Kong jellyfish as related to Chironex fleckeri, the Australian box jellyfish often described as the world’s most venomous marine animal. A reported relationship alone does not establish equal venom potency, a comparable risk to people, or even that the newly reported animal’s effects on humans have been documented.
The available reporting does not provide a verified, species-specific comparison of venom or human-health effects. Treating the Hong Kong find as equally dangerous would go beyond what those sources show. Do not handle an unidentified jellyfish.
