For most buyers, the MidWest Wire Exercise Pen with Door is the best dog pen of 2026. It combines multiple height choices, eight hinged panels, a double-latch door, flat-fold storage, ground anchors, and the ability to connect additional pens. The best alternative depends on the dog and setting: Frisco is the value steel option, Richell is the furniture-style convertible, EliteField is best for travel, IRIS is the molded-plastic choice, and FXW Homeplus is the threshold-free indoor pick.
No dog pen is escape-proof. Height and construction must match the individual dog’s jumping, climbing, strength, chewing, and pushing behavior. This guide is based on manufacturer specifications and current retailer information where available; no physical testing or first-hand experience was performed.

A dog pen—also called a dog playpen or exercise pen—is a containment area with more room to move than a crate. It can help with puppy management, supervised play, home separation, and travel, but it is not a substitute for exercise, training, potty breaks, or supervision. The American Kennel Club’s playpen guidance also cautions owners to check stability and latches, provide shade and water outdoors, and use confinement positively rather than as punishment.

- A win-win solution: The FXW Dog Playpen is designed to bring a win-win solution to you and your lovely dog. Different from a narrow enclosure cage or kennel, the FXW dog pen provides a spacious semi-open activity area specifically for your dog. Your dog will have fun in its safe and sturdy kingdom. Meanwhile, you can take a real break and be truly relaxed without worrying about your beloved pet. Fun, Relaxation and Well-being is the orientation of the FXW team.
- Unlock your freedom, savor the moment: The stakes are designed with rounded ball tops to protect the dog's claws from injury. The rods are easily inserted into the ground for greater stability and rigidity, which won't collapse when the dog leans against them. Also, the automatic gravity-actioned locking mechanism will ensure you can open and close the door smoothly and reduces the chance of dogs unlocking by themselves. All of this is designed for absolute safety, so you can really relax.
- Super easy to assemble: It won’t take you more than 5 minutes to assemble these portable dog fences as well as pack them away due to the rod-connected design. Meanwhile, panels can be added or removed freely to give you a fully flexible area and arrange the dog pen in any shape you need.
- Multi-scenario use: The FXW dog playpen features a powder coating that will help protect against rust and extend its life, which makes it ideal for RV camping, traveling, or for use in the yard. When used indoors, we recommend placing it on a dog pad or carpet to prevent the rods from scratching the floor, or please try our new floor protectors or dog pee pad for the same purpose.
This is a research-based comparison, not a hands-on test: no physical testing or first-hand experience was performed. The rankings below reflect current manufacturer specifications, retailer information where available, and how well each design fits a distinct buying need. None of these pens should be treated as escape-proof.

Our picks
1. MidWest Wire Exercise Pen with Door — Best overall
For a conventional, reusable exercise pen, the MidWest wire dog exercise pen with door is the strongest all-purpose choice. MidWest lists eight hinged 24-inch panels, several height choices ranging from 24 to 48 inches, a double-latch door, ground anchors, tool-free setup, flat-fold storage, and the ability to connect multiple pens. The manufacturer specifications should be checked for the exact height and configuration before ordering.
Recommended Free Tools
Why it stands out: The wire-panel format is flexible enough for an indoor puppy area, a temporary travel setup, or an outdoor enclosure when properly anchored. It folds flat for storage, can be reshaped to suit a room, and offers more height choices than most basic pens in this group. The door is also more convenient than lifting a dog over a panel.
- Best for: Puppies, everyday indoor containment, travel, and owners who want a modular X-pen.
- Useful features: Multiple heights, a double-latch door, flat-fold storage, connection points for additional pens, and ground anchors.
- Watch out for: Wire does not prevent a determined dog from climbing or pushing. Select the height for the individual dog’s jumping, climbing, strength, and chewing behavior—not just its breed or current weight.
- Accessory warning: MidWest lists pen tops separately, so do not assume a top or anchors are included in every package.
Verdict: Choose this one when you want the best balance of height selection, portability, shape flexibility, and conventional pen durability. For a strong outdoor dog or climber, treat the anchors and any compatible top as part of the containment plan rather than optional decoration.
2. Frisco Steel 8-Panel Configurable Dog Gate and Playpen — Best value steel pen
The Frisco steel 8-panel dog playpen is a good value-oriented option for buyers who want a steel gate that can also form a closed playpen. Chewy’s dog-playpen roundup listed the 30-inch model with a 4.7/5 rating and a price of $79.99 at the time of research. Those numbers are a snapshot, not a promise: retailer ratings, price, inventory, and model details can change.
Why it stands out: A gate-and-playpen design gives it a second job. You can use it as a barrier or room divider in one situation and configure it as a pen in another. That is useful for homes where the dog needs access to part of a room but not the whole house.
- Best for: Buyers seeking a moderate-priced steel option and a flexible gate/playpen format.
- Useful feature: The ability to configure the panels as a gate or enclosure.
- Watch out for: The listed 30-inch height is not a universal solution. A small puppy may be fine while a tall, athletic, or highly motivated jumper may clear it.
- Before buying: Confirm the current panel count, individual panel dimensions, door design, height, and stock status on the live product listing.
Verdict: This is the value pick when a steel enclosure and room-divider capability matter more than having the broadest range of height and accessory options.
3. Richell Convertible Elite 6-Panel Pet Gate/Crate — Best furniture-style convertible
The Richell Convertible Elite 6-panel pet gate is aimed at owners who want a pen that can continue serving a purpose after the puppy stage. Richell says the six-panel unit converts between a pen, freestanding gate, and room divider. It has a door panel, locks the panels at 90- and 180-degree angles for stability, and is listed at 35.8 inches high.
In pen configuration, the manufacturer lists approximate dimensions of 68.9 by 31.9 by 35.8 inches. Richell recommends the H6 model for dogs from 8.8 to 88 pounds, but that broad suggested weight range should not be treated as an escape-resistance guarantee. Jumping ability, climbing, pushing, chewing, and the dog’s actual body shape still matter.

- Best for: Homes where appearance, furniture compatibility, and long-term versatility matter.
- Useful features: Pen, gate, and room-divider configurations; a door panel; and angle locks at 90 and 180 degrees.
- Watch out for: At 64.4 pounds according to the manufacturer, it is far less convenient to move than a folding wire or soft-sided pen.
- Separate accessories: The floor tray and wire top are sold separately. Two sets can be combined to create a larger space, but compatibility and the resulting layout should be verified before purchase.
- Setting limitation: Its wood-style construction and heavy, furniture-oriented design make it less attractive for rough outdoor use or destructive chewers.
See the Richell product specifications for the current H6 configuration and accessory information.
Verdict: Pick it when you want a substantial-looking indoor divider that can adapt as your dog’s needs change. Pick a lighter wire pen instead if you expect to move the enclosure frequently.
4. EliteField 2-Door Soft-Sided Playpen — Best for travel
The EliteField 2-door soft-sided dog playpen is the most travel-friendly choice in this lineup. EliteField currently lists soft pet playpens in its product catalog, and its two-door design is intended to make access easier from more than one direction. Chewy listed a 36-by-36-by-24-inch size with a 4.5/5 rating and a $54.99 price at the time of research.
Why it stands out: Soft-sided construction is generally easier to carry, pack, and store than rigid metal or wood. Two doors can be helpful in a hotel room, temporary foster setup, or other space where one side of the pen may be blocked by furniture.
- Best for: Travel, temporary indoor containment, foster situations, and calm dogs that already tolerate soft-sided enclosures.
- Useful features: Low carrying and storage burden compared with rigid pens, plus two access doors.
- Do not choose it for: Persistent chewers, dogs that claw fabric, anxious dogs that panic when confined, or strong dogs that push and collapse barriers.
- Surface warning: Soft-sided pens can be less stable on some floors and may need more careful placement and supervision.
The EliteField catalog and the live retailer listing should be checked for the exact size, color, and availability. A soft pen is a portability choice, not a heavy-duty containment choice.

5. IRIS 34-inch 8-Panel Exercise Playpen with Door — Best molded-plastic option
The IRIS 34-inch 8-panel dog playpen with door offers a non-wire enclosure with a relatively easy-clean molded-plastic design. IRIS lists it for indoor and outdoor use and identifies a door, rubber feet, easy assembly, compatibility with add-on panels, and an approximately 63-by-63-inch footprint. The gray version was listed at $129.99 during research.
Why it stands out: Molded plastic is easy to wipe down and can look less cage-like than open wire. It is appealing for puppy messes and for owners who do not want exposed wire throughout a living area. IRIS’s broader playpen collection includes additional heights, panel counts, and expansion options.
- Best for: Small-to-medium dogs, indoor puppy areas, and owners who prioritize cleanability and a solid-looking barrier.
- Useful features: Molded plastic panels, rubber feet, a door, and add-on-panel compatibility.
- Watch out for: Plastic is not automatically stronger than steel. A dog that leans, jumps, pushes, or chews may move or damage it.
- Puppy warning: The AKC specifically notes that teething puppies may chew plastic playpens. Inspect the panels regularly if your puppy mouths the enclosure.
For the exact footprint and included components, see the IRIS 34-inch product listing.
Verdict: Choose IRIS when a wipe-clean, non-wire surface matters and your dog is unlikely to chew or shove the panels. It is not the best choice for a powerful or destructive dog simply because it has solid sides.

6. FXW Homeplus Indoor Dog Playpen — Best threshold-free indoor pen
The FXW Homeplus indoor dog playpen has a feature that is easy to overlook until you need it: a threshold-free gate intended to make entry easier for small puppies and older dogs. FXW lists multiple heights and panel configurations. The associated Chewy listing showed 24-, 32-, and 40-inch options and several panel counts; the 24-inch, six-panel model was listed in stock during research.
Why it stands out: A low-threshold entry can reduce tripping and stumbling for a young puppy with short legs or an older dog with limited mobility. The range of panel counts and heights also makes it easier to fit an indoor pen to a particular room instead of accepting one fixed footprint.
- Best for: Indoor puppy areas, older dogs, small dogs, and households that need an easy-to-cross doorway.
- Useful features: Threshold-free access and expandability through different panel counts and heights.
- Watch out for: The 24-inch model is not suitable for every jumper, climber, medium dog, or large dog. A low entry does not mean the whole enclosure is secure for a determined animal.
- Retailer snapshot: Chewy listed the 24-inch six-panel version at 4.6/5 from 583 ratings during research. Ratings and inventory can change.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right dog pen
1. Start with the dog’s behavior, not the breed label
Measure your dog’s standing height and consider what happens when the dog is excited, bored, frightened, or trying to reach something outside the pen. A quiet dog that stays on the floor has different requirements from a climber that uses the wire as a ladder or a strong dog that repeatedly leans into the panels.
Ask these questions before choosing a height or material:
- Can the dog jump onto or over a panel?
- Can the dog climb wire or use nearby furniture as a launch point?
- Does the dog chew plastic, fabric, wood, or metal fittings?
- Can the dog push a lightweight pen across the floor?
- Will the dog panic, claw, or repeatedly throw its weight against the enclosure?
For a determined escape artist, no ordinary playpen should be described as escape-proof. A taller panel, a compatible top, an anchor system, or a different form of supervised management may be necessary. The pen must also be stable in the actual location where it will be used.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Choose the material for the setting
| Material | Advantages | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wire | Usually the broadest range of heights, folds flat, reshapes easily, and can connect to other panels | Everyday indoor use, puppies, travel, and modular layouts | Can be climbed, pushed, or caught by a determined dog; may need a top or anchors |
| Steel gate/playpen | Useful as both a barrier and enclosure | Homes that need a room divider as well as a pen | Check height and panel stability for the individual dog |
| Molded plastic | Wipe-clean and less visually cage-like | Puppy messes and owners who prefer solid panels | Can be chewed, moved, or damaged; not inherently stronger than steel |
| Wood or hardwood-style | Furniture-oriented appearance and multi-purpose room-divider use | Indoor living spaces where appearance matters | Heavy, less convenient to move, and less suited to destructive chewers |
| Soft-sided fabric | Light, portable, and easy to store | Travel and temporary containment for calm dogs | Can be clawed, chewed, pushed, or collapsed |
3. Measure both the dog and the available floor area
The panel height must account for standing height and jumping or climbing behavior. The floor area should leave room for the dog to move comfortably, along with water, bedding, and appropriate toys, without turning the pen into a crowded storage bin. A larger footprint is not automatically better if it leaves no safe route around furniture or makes supervision difficult.
For a puppy, plan the pen around a management routine rather than treating it as a place to leave the puppy indefinitely. The pen does not replace supervision, exercise, training, or regular potty breaks.
4. Decide whether you need a door, a gate, or a true enclosure
A door is useful when the pen is tall or when lifting the dog over the panels would be awkward. A gate/playpen design such as the Frisco can be useful when you sometimes want to block a doorway or divide a room instead of enclosing the dog completely. A convertible design such as the Richell may justify its extra weight if it will remain in use as a gate after the pen stage.

- Semi-Open & Expandable: Creates a stress-free environment and allows you to add more panels as your dog grows.
- Safe & Sturdy Build: No sharp edges and strong construction prevent injuries and withstand jumping.
- Ease of Access: Threshold-free gate allows easy walk-in cleaning for humans and worry-free running for dogs.
For travel, prioritize folded size, carrying weight, and setup over furniture appearance. For a permanent indoor puppy zone, cleanability, floor protection, and access through the doorway may matter more than portability.
5. Check what is included—and what is not
Pen listings often show accessories in photographs that are not included in the base package. Before ordering, verify whether you are receiving the door panel, ground anchors, floor tray, top, mat, and any expansion panels. MidWest lists accessory tops separately, and Richell lists its floor tray and wire top separately. IRIS and FXW offer expansion options, but the compatible panel type and dimensions must match the original model.
Useful dog pen accessories
Accessories can solve a real containment or cleaning problem, but compatibility is model-specific. Consider dog playpen accessories only after confirming the exact brand, height, panel width, and connection system.
- Exercise pen top: A compatible top can help prevent climbing or jumping, but it does not make a pen automatically escape-proof. It may also change ventilation, access, and how easily you can supervise the dog.
- Ground anchors: These are relevant for outdoor wire pens that could be pushed, lifted, or shifted. Use them only as intended for the specific pen and ground conditions.
- Dog pen floor tray: A tray can protect flooring and make cleanup easier, but confirm that it fits the exact panel footprint. The Richell tray is a separate accessory.
- Washable mat: A properly sized washable surface can protect the floor and give the dog a more comfortable resting area. It should not reduce the usable space so much that the pen becomes crowded.
- Dog playpen add-on panels: Expansion panels are useful when you need more floor area, but panels from one brand or model may not connect safely to another.
Safe setup and use
Indoors
- Place the pen on a stable, level surface away from shelves, cords, furniture edges, and other objects the dog could use to climb or pull into the enclosure.
- Assemble every connection and latch, then push gently against several sides before putting the dog inside.
- Make sure the doorway closes and locks fully. A door that appears closed but is not latched is a common failure point.
- Provide enough room for comfortable movement, bedding, water, and suitable toys without overcrowding.
- Introduce the pen gradually with rewards and calm sessions. Do not use it as punishment.
- Watch the dog during the first uses and after any change in toys, furniture, location, or routine.
Outdoors
Outdoor use adds risks that a living room may not. Provide shade and fresh water, inspect the enclosure for gaps and unstable connections, and check that the dog cannot lift or move it. Ground anchors are particularly relevant for a wire pen such as the MidWest, and a compatible top may be appropriate for a climber. Never assume that a pen advertised for outdoor use is secure for every dog or safe to leave unattended for long periods.
For puppies and chewers
Teething puppies may chew plastic, and some dogs will chew wire coatings, fabric, wood, or latches. Inspect the pen frequently for sharp edges, loose connections, cracked panels, damaged fabric, and compromised hardware. Stop using a component that has become unsafe. A pen is a management aid while you teach the puppy what to do; it is not a replacement for supervision and timely potty breaks.

- Choose the MidWest if you want the most versatile conventional wire pen, several height choices, flat storage, and outdoor anchor options.
- Choose the Frisco if a moderate-priced steel gate that can also form a playpen suits your home and your dog does not need more than the available height.
- Choose the Richell if a furniture-style indoor enclosure that later becomes a gate or room divider is worth the weight and separate-accessory cost.
- Choose the EliteField if portability is the priority and your dog is calm, supervised, and unlikely to chew or collapse soft fabric.
- Choose the IRIS if easy-clean molded plastic and a non-wire appearance are more important than maximum strength.
- Choose the FXW Homeplus if a threshold-free indoor doorway is especially useful for a small puppy or older dog.
For most households, the MidWest is the best starting point because it offers the broadest combination of height, configuration, storage, and accessories. But the right choice changes quickly if your dog is a jumper, climber, chewer, anxious dog, or mobility-limited senior. Match the enclosure to that individual behavior and supervise every new setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a dog pen better than a crate?
A dog pen provides more room to move and play than a crate, so the two can serve different purposes. A crate may be useful for transport, sleep, or short periods of rest, while a pen can create a larger supervised puppy area. Neither replaces exercise, training, potty breaks, or supervision.
How tall should a dog pen be?
Choose a height based on the individual dog’s standing height, jumping and climbing behavior, strength, and chewing habits. Breed or weight alone is not enough. A 24- or 30-inch pen may be unsuitable for a dog that jumps or climbs, even if the dog is otherwise small.
Are soft-sided dog pens safe?
Only if the dog is calm in that type of enclosure and remains appropriately supervised. Soft-sided pens are portable, but persistent chewers, anxious dogs, clawers, and dogs that push barriers can damage or collapse them. They are best for temporary containment and travel rather than determined escape artists.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I use a dog playpen outside?
Yes, but outdoor use requires shade, fresh water, stable placement, and regular checks. Make sure the dog cannot lift or move the pen; compatible ground anchors or a top may be appropriate for some wire setups. Outdoor-rated does not mean escape-proof or suitable for unsupervised use with every dog.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The MidWest Wire Exercise Pen with Door is the best all-around dog pen for most buyers, while the Frisco is the value steel choice, Richell the furniture-style convertible, EliteField the travel pick, IRIS the molded-plastic option, and FXW Homeplus the threshold-free indoor choice. None is escape-proof: measure the dog, account for its behavior, verify included accessories, and use anchors, tops, shade, and supervision where appropriate.
