After-Hours Pet Emergencies: When to Go and Who to Call

Know when to head to an emergency veterinary hospital, who to contact after hours, and what information to gather if your pet may have been poisoned.

If your pet has trouble breathing, collapses, has a seizure, suffers major trauma, or may have swallowed something toxic, contact an emergency veterinary hospital now. Call while preparing to leave if it will not delay your trip; the hospital can advise you and prepare for your arrival. For less-clear problems, your regular clinic’s after-hours message, a local veterinary triage service, or a poison-control hotline may help you decide what to do—but remote advice is not a substitute for emergency treatment.

Is your pet experiencing an emergency?

Go to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital for severe or potentially life-threatening signs. Cornell’s emergency service lists examples including:

  • Difficulty breathing, unresponsiveness, collapse, sudden weakness, pale or blue gums, or loss of balance.
  • Trauma, excessive bleeding, a seizure, facial swelling, or inability to bear weight.
  • Difficulty urinating, difficulty giving birth, a distended or painful abdomen, or unproductive retching.
  • Severe or prolonged vomiting, bloody or black tarry diarrhea, or suspected medication or toxin ingestion.

This is not a complete diagnostic checklist. Cornell’s June 2025 guidance identifies any difficulty breathing as an emergency and advises prompt help for sudden collapse or weakness and suspected toxic ingestion. If your pet has a severe sign, do not wait for an online response. Call the emergency hospital as you prepare to go, provided the call does not delay departure; the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends calling so the hospital can be ready for the pet’s arrival.

Who can you call when your regular vet is closed?

Your local emergency veterinary hospital

Call the nearest emergency clinic for current availability, directions, and instructions. Hours, location, species treated, and capabilities differ by hospital, so confirm directly rather than assuming a clinic is open or equipped for your pet’s needs. Cornell’s emergency-service information describes its own hospital in Ithaca, New York; it is not a national directory.

Veterinary triage by video, when available

Some veterinary triage services can help assess whether a pet needs immediate emergency care or may be monitored until a regular appointment. Cornell says it partners with VetTriage to offer its clients 24/7 video triage for a fee and says the service can coordinate an emergency visit. That offering applies to Cornell clients; it does not establish general availability for other pet owners. A video assessment should not delay travel when a pet has a severe sign.

Poison-control hotline for suspected exposure

If your pet may have eaten or contacted a toxic substance, contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic promptly. Cornell lists ASPCA Animal Poison Control at 888-426-4435 and Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661; consultation fees may apply. Confirm the current number and fee when you call. Poison-control staff can provide exposure-specific guidance, but a hotline is not a replacement for emergency care if your pet is critically ill.

What to do if you suspect poisoning

  1. Call promptly. Contact a veterinarian or local emergency clinic; use a poison-control service for exposure-specific advice when appropriate.
  2. Gather the details. If you can, provide the product or substance name and ingredient list, the estimated amount, when the exposure occurred, your pet’s weight, and any symptoms. This information helps veterinary professionals assess the risk and advise next steps.
  3. Keep the packaging. Bring or photograph the container or label if possible. AVMA also advises collecting vomited or chewed material in a sealed bag for the hospital when feasible.
  4. Do not try a remedy without direction. Do not induce vomiting or give medication unless a veterinarian or poison-control center tells you to.

What first aid can—and cannot—do

First aid is interim support while you arrange professional care. The AVMA states: “First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet’s life until you can get them veterinary care.” Follow professional instructions rather than attempting treatments based on guesswork.

Prepare for a future after-hours problem

Keep your regular veterinarian’s contact details and the number and location of a nearby emergency hospital somewhere you can reach quickly. You can also assemble an optional pet first-aid kit using the AVMA checklist, which includes emergency contact information and supplies. The checklist is preparation guidance, not a treatment plan; some items, including materials used to induce vomiting, should be used only under veterinary or poison-control direction.
