The 8 Best Dog Car Seats and Restraints of 2026

The best dog car restraint depends on your dog’s size, body shape, and vehicle. These eight CPS-certified harnesses, carriers, and crates cover small dogs, large breeds, SUVs, and air travel.

A dog car seat is only useful in a crash if it keeps the dog contained and transfers force through a system designed for that purpose. That rules out treating every padded booster seat, leash clip, or “crash-tested” product as equivalent.

For this list, the products fall into three groups: crash-tested harnesses for the vehicle’s rear seat, enclosed carriers for small dogs, and travel crates for larger dogs. The Center for Pet Safety (CPS) certifies products by category, size, and tested configuration. Because pet restraints do not have one mandatory premarket safety standard, check the exact model, size, straps, and door configuration rather than relying on a broad marketing claim.

1. Sleepypod Clickit Range: best newer harness for broad dog shapes

The Sleepypod Clickit Range is a rear-seat harness designed for dogs whose proportions do not fit a conventional medium- or large-dog pattern particularly well. Sleepypod offers Regular and Long versions, with sizes listed from Small through 2X-Large and a manufacturer-recommended weight range of 18 to 110 pounds. The Long version is intended for narrower or deeper-chested body shapes.

#1 Best Overall
Kurgo Enhanced Strength Tru-Fit Smart Harness, Black, Medium
  • Crash-Tested Safety & Comfort: The Kurgo Enhanced Strength Tru-Fit Dog Car Harness offers a crash test-certified fit with all-steel buckles
  • Fit for Walks & Travel: Designed as a daily use harness fit, it features five points of adjustment and a padded chest plate for secure comfort during rides or walks
  • Durable & Travel Ready: Built with an enhanced strength build, includes a 10-inch seatbelt tether with steel carabiner, making it an ideal pet travel safety harness
  • Designed for Real-World Adventures: Kurgo gear is built to solve everyday challenges with dogs, making travel, walks, and outdoor play safer, easier, and more fun for both of you
  • Durable Gear, Lifetime Promise: Engineered for longevity and reliability, every Kurgo product is crafted with rugged materials and backed by our industry-leading lifetime warranty

It uses the vehicle’s seat belt and a three-point design. The intended installation location is the rear passenger seat, not the front passenger seat.

The CPS list currently identifies the Clickit Range in Small, Medium, Large, and XL. Sleepypod’s retail page also lists a 2XL, so do not assume that every newly listed size or variant has the same certification status. Confirm the exact size before purchase.

Choose it if: your dog is slender, deep-chested, or difficult to fit in the older Clickit Sport proportions.

2. Sleepypod Clickit Sport Plus: best established harness

The current retail name is Clickit Sport Plus, while the CPS certification list identifies the Clickit Sport in Small, Medium, Large, and XL. Sleepypod gives the current product a recommended weight range of 18 to 90 pounds, but weight is not enough to choose a size.

The sizing chart is based on rib-cage circumference, ranging from 16.5 to 40 inches depending on size. Measure around the dog’s rib cage and compare that measurement with Sleepypod’s current chart.

Installation is unusual: feed the vehicle’s latch plate through the harness’s two seat-belt loops and buckle the belt normally. There is no extension tether. Incorrect routing can undermine the intended restraint performance, so follow Sleepypod’s instructions or installation video rather than attaching a short leash or improvising with a carabiner.

Choose it if: your medium or large dog fits the rib-cage measurements and you want a harness that can also be used for walking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Sleepypod Clickit Terrain: best alternative Clickit harness

The Clickit Terrain is a separate harness from the Clickit Range and Clickit Sport Plus. CPS currently identifies the Terrain in Small, Medium, Large, and XL, and Sleepypod reported a five-star CPS rating in a higher-weight-rating test in 2020.

Rank #2
Kurgo Enhanced Strength Tru-Fit Smart Harness, Black, Large

Its value is mainly fit. Some dogs sit more comfortably and securely in the Terrain’s shape than in another Clickit model. However, Sleepypod’s current storefront gives greater prominence to the Range and Sport Plus, so check inventory, available sizes, and the current instructions before treating it as a like-for-like alternative.

Do not transfer the Range’s weight limits or the Sport Plus’s sizing information to the Terrain. Each model needs to be assessed against its own measurements and certification listing.

Choose it if: the Terrain’s available size and shape match your dog better than the other Clickit harnesses.

4. Away Pet Carrier: best carrier for car-to-air travel

The Away Pet Carrier is an enclosed carrier for small dogs and cats. CPS lists it as certified with a five-star rating. Away gives it a capacity of up to 18 pounds and dimensions of 18.7 × 10.8 × 10.75 inches.

For vehicle use, it has built-in seat-belt latches and a safety collar clip. The carrier is also designed for cabin air travel: Away says it fits under the seat on most major airlines and meets FAA requirements. That does not guarantee acceptance on a particular flight. Airline policies, aircraft layouts, and under-seat dimensions vary, so check with the airline before traveling.

The collar clip should not be confused with a substitute crash restraint for a dog outside the carrier. Keep the dog inside the carrier and use the carrier’s approved vehicle attachment system.

Choose it if: you have a small dog and want one enclosed carrier for road trips and cabin flights.

5. Diggs Passenger Carrier: best structured carrier for small dogs

The Diggs Passenger Carrier is a structured rear-seat carrier with a five-star CPS certification. CPS records an 18-pound test dog and testing in October 2021.

Rank #3
EzyDog Drive Dog Car Harness, Crash Tested and Certified - Medium
  • CRASH-TESTED VEHICLE SAFETY HARNESS – Conforms to USA (FMVSS 213) safety standards, providing reliable protection during sudden stops or accidents.
  • ENGINEERED FOR DURABILITY – Built to last with only the strongest and highest-quality materials including aluminum alloy Tri-Glides, genuine vehicle-tested seat belt webbing, and Crosslink Technology that ensure the harness is second to none in strength.
  • EFFORTLESS & QUICK TO USE – After the initial fit, your dog seat belt harness can be put on and taken off quickly using the Dual SR Buckle Closure System and includes dual D-ring leash attachment points for the walk to and from your car.
  • UNIVERSAL SEAT BELT COMPATIBILITY – Designed to work seamlessly with your car's existing seat belt system for hassle-free installation. Simply feed the seat belt through both webbing handles on the top of your dog car harness, click the buckle into your car's seat belt, and you're ready for a drive.
  • COMFORTABLE CUSTOM FIT – Features an ergonomic chest plate with padding for comfort. The chest plate is contoured to mold to the shape of your dog for a custom fit.

Its structure is a better fit for small dogs that do not settle well in a soft, open booster seat. Install it using the manufacturer’s current crash-protection attachment instructions. That system is not interchangeable with a normal leash clip, collar connection, replacement strap, or aftermarket insert.

Certification applies to the tested product configuration. If you replace an attachment component or substantially modify the carrier, you should not assume that the modified setup offers the same tested performance.

Choose it if: your small dog needs an enclosed, structured carrier rather than an open seat.

6. Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed with PPRS Handilock: best carrier for very small dogs and cats

The Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed is a bed-like enclosed carrier for pets up to 15 pounds. CPS lists the Mobile Pet Bed with the PPRS Handilock as a five-star certified carrier.

For vehicle installation, the lap portion of the seat belt wraps around the carrier and the shoulder portion routes through the carrier’s security strap. The PPRS Handilock matters: earlier testing found that the carrier’s upper Velcro connection could release, while a later retest with the Handilock met CPS criteria and kept the carrier connected and the test simulant contained.

Do not buy the carrier and assume that any older or alternate connection method is equivalent. Use the PPRS Handilock and follow the current installation directions.

Choose it if: your dog or cat weighs 15 pounds or less and is likely to be calmer in a familiar bed-style carrier.

7. Gunner G1 Kennel: best heavy-duty crate

The Gunner G1 is a rigid travel crate for owners who prioritize enclosure and structural protection over low weight or easy storage. CPS certifies the G1 Small, Medium, and Intermediate with specified strength-rated anchor straps. The current CPS list does not certify the G1 Large.

Rank #4
CarSafe Crash Tested Dog Safety Harness | Size M
  • CRASH TESTED DOG HARNESS: Certified up to 32Kg / 70lbs to provide total peace of mind when transporting your dog in the car.
  • PADDED & LIGHTWEIGHT: A design that connects directly to your car seat belt, this crash tested harness provides a strong yet comfortable safety car harness for your pet.
  • FULLY REFLECTIVE FABRIC: The front chest piece ensures hi visibility in all situations at any time of day.
  • CUSHIONED & BREATHABLE: layers designed into the chest piece design ensure your dog travels in comfort.
  • DOG WALKING HARNESS: This flexible car harness for dogs can be used as a conventional harness for walks, with both front and back leash connection points.

CPS lists the Medium for dogs up to 45 pounds and the Intermediate for dogs up to 75 pounds. The Small is certified for carrier and crate use. Placement depends on the version: the G1 Small is certified for second-row installation, while the larger certified versions are intended for an SUV cargo area or truck-bed application, subject to the manufacturer’s instructions.

The specified anchor straps are part of the safety system. A generic tie-down or an unapproved replacement should not be treated as equivalent. Optional accessories also need separate scrutiny: CPS does not automatically include Gunner’s Cold Weather Door in the certification.

Choose it if: you have an SUV or truck, a dog that needs a rigid crate, and enough room for a heavy, bulky enclosure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Lucky Kennel Medium: best alternative heavy-duty crate

The Lucky Kennel is another rotomolded travel-crate option. CPS lists the Medium, Intermediate, and Large versions as five-star certified with the Lucky Ratchet Strap Kit. The CPS-listed Medium is rated to 50 pounds.

Lucky Duck identifies its four-piece ratchet strap kit as the only strap kit it recommends for the kennel and says the kit met CPS crash-test standards. Use that specified kit rather than substituting cargo straps that happen to fit.

There is also an important door distinction. CPS testing used the standard injection-molded door. The optional metal door was not part of the certified setup, so the metal-door version should not be advertised or assumed to have the same certification.

Choose it if: you want a rigid kennel and prefer Lucky Duck’s shape, handles, and ratchet-strap system.

How to choose the right type

  1. Start with the dog’s size and shape. Measure rib-cage circumference for a harness. For a carrier or crate, check the manufacturer’s internal dimensions as well as the weight limit. Your dog should be able to sit, stand, turn around, and lie down without being forced into a cramped position.
  2. Decide whether the dog needs an enclosure. A harness secures the dog directly. A carrier or crate also limits movement and can prevent the dog from being thrown around the cabin, but it takes more space.
  3. Match the product to the vehicle. Harnesses and most carriers belong in the second row. Larger crates may require an SUV cargo area or truck-bed installation. Never place a dog in front of an active airbag.
  4. Verify the exact certified configuration. Check the CPS listing for the product name, size, strap kit, door, and attachment system. “The brand is certified” is not precise enough.
  5. Practice before a long drive. Introduce the harness, carrier, or crate at home. Then sit in the parked vehicle, make short trips, and inspect whether the dog can slip out, chew a strap, or interfere with the driver.

What not to use as a crash restraint

Open booster seats and ordinary dog beds may elevate a small dog or reduce distraction, but they are not automatically crash-protection products. CPS testing found booster-seat failures including anchor-strap failure, deformed connection hardware, and complete separation of a seat from the test bench.

Do not attach a normal leash, collar, walking harness, seat-belt extender, or zipline-style tether to a vehicle anchor and call the result crash-safe. A walking harness is designed for everyday handling, not necessarily for collision forces. Extension components can increase excursion and are excluded from CPS-certified harness systems.

Also be cautious with outdated lists. CPS revoked the Gen7 Commuter Carrier’s certification on December 31, 2019; CPS also notes that it was private-labeled as Petco’s Good 2 Go Crash Tested Pet Carrier. Product names and retail listings can continue circulating after certification changes, so the current CPS database is the useful reference.

Safe installation checklist

  • Use the rear seat unless the manufacturer’s certified instructions specify another location.
  • Follow the product’s exact belt-routing or anchor-strap instructions.
  • Use only the straps and hardware included in, or explicitly specified for, the tested setup.
  • Remove slack where the instructions require it, but do not alter the system with an extender.
  • Check buckles, stitching, doors, anchor points, and straps before every trip.
  • Do not combine a carrier, crate, or harness with an unapproved aftermarket attachment and assume certification carries over.

FAQ

Are dog car seats actually safe in a crash?

Some harnesses, carriers, and crates have been independently tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety. An open booster seat or padded dog bed is not equivalent. Safety depends on the exact product, size, attachment system, and installation used in testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should a dog ride in the front or back seat?

The rear seat is the default choice. A front-seat dog can be injured by airbag deployment and has greater exposure to frontal-crash intrusion. Use the manufacturer’s certified rear-seat installation for harnesses and carriers.

Can I attach my dog’s leash to the car’s seat-belt anchor?

No. A normal leash, collar, walking harness, short tether, carabiner, or seat-belt extender is not a crash-tested restraint. Use the complete harness, carrier, or crate system specified by the manufacturer.

Is the Gunner G1 Large CPS-certified?

The current CPS list identifies the G1 Small, Medium, and Intermediate, but not the G1 Large. Certification also depends on the specified strength-rated anchor straps, so do not generalize certification from one G1 size to another.

The Bottom Line

For most medium and large dogs, start with a properly fitted Sleepypod harness and measure the rib cage rather than choosing by weight alone. For small dogs, an enclosed CPS-certified carrier is a more defensible choice than an open booster seat. For larger dogs traveling in an SUV or truck, the Gunner G1 or Lucky Kennel can provide a rigid enclosure, but only when the certified size, straps, door, and installation are used.

Before buying, verify the exact configuration in the current CPS certification list. That final check matters more than a generic “crash-tested” badge on a product page.
