The Bread Kittens were three kittens—Chapati, Bap and Bagel—born at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home’s London centre. Their mother, Hovis, arrived there heavily pregnant after living in an overwhelmed multiple-cat household. Battersea says the kittens were raised in foster care and all three, along with Hovis, went on to new homes.
How the Bread Kittens came to Battersea
Hovis arrived at Battersea’s London centre heavily pregnant. Before that, she had lived in a multiple-cat household that had become overwhelmed. The account does not identify the household or explain how it became overwhelmed.
Hovis gave birth to Chapati, Bap and Bagel at the centre. Battersea’s story introduces the three as individuals, not just as a litter with bread-inspired names.
Meet Chapati, Bap and Bagel
- Bap was quick to win people over, flopping into laps and purring.
- Bagel was gentle and liked curling up in people’s arms or quietly watching from a warm perch.
- Chapati took longer to settle, but showed an affectionate, energetic side: he enjoyed a cuddle before darting off to play.
Foster care and new homes
Foster carers raised the kittens with support from Battersea’s cattery team. Before the trio left for new homes, they had a final hangout together on their favourite perches. Hovis also thrived in foster care and found a home of her own.

The story’s appeal lies in the contrast among the kittens: Bap’s easy sociability, Bagel’s quiet gentleness and Chapati’s slower-to-emerge, playful affection. Their shared journey—from Hovis arriving pregnant, through foster care, to each finding a home—brings those different personalities together.
