Feed your cat a complete-and-balanced food labeled for the right life stage, measure the daily portion, and adjust it to your cat’s body condition and health. Kittens need food for growth; adult cats need portions suited to their individual needs; older cats do not automatically need a special senior formula. Use feeding-label directions as a starting point, and ask a veterinarian about changes tied to illness, poor appetite, or unexplained weight loss.

How to choose a food for your cat’s life stage

Start with the nutritional adequacy statement on the package. It identifies whether the food is complete and balanced for a stated life stage, such as growth, adult maintenance, gestation or lactation, or all life stages. Check that the product is intended for cats: cats have species-specific nutrient requirements. Marketing terms or an ingredient list alone do not establish that a food meets those needs. The AAFCO guide to selecting pet food explains how to read these claims.

Feeding directions on the package are estimates, not an individualized prescription. A cat’s calorie needs vary with factors including life stage, weight, and activity. Use the label to establish a starting portion, then measure what you serve and monitor your cat’s weight and body condition. AAFCO’s calorie guidance explains why calorie information and feeding amounts need to be considered in context.

What should I feed my kitten?

Choose a food labeled complete and balanced for growth, or one that covers all life stages. Kittens grow quickly, have small stomachs, and generally need more food per pound of body weight and more frequent meals than adult cats. VCA notes that kittens are typically fully weaned at about eight weeks, though their growth and development vary. See VCA’s guidance on feeding growing kittens.

Measure the daily amount according to the food’s directions and your veterinarian’s advice, rather than assuming every kitten of the same age needs the same portion. Keep fresh water available. If a kitten is not eating, is losing weight, or has a health problem, contact a veterinarian rather than trying to solve it by changing foods alone.

How often should you feed your cat?

Meal frequency often changes as a kitten grows. Cornell’s general schedule is three meals a day for kittens up to about six months, then two meals a day from six months to one year. Many adult cats do well with one or two meals daily. These are general guidelines; household routines and an individual cat’s needs can differ. Cornell’s feeding-frequency guidance discusses these age ranges.

Whatever the schedule, the total amount over the day matters. Free feeding—leaving food available for a cat to eat at will—works for some cats, but others may overeat and gain weight. If you use it, keep track of how much food is offered and consumed rather than continually topping up the bowl.

When should I switch my kitten to adult food?

Many cats approach maturity around 10 to 12 months, and a transition to adult maintenance food is commonly made around one year. VCA recommends transitioning at one year or when maturity is reached, whichever is later; some larger cats may take longer. Growth varies, so ask your veterinarian if your cat’s development, weight, or health makes the timing uncertain.

Change foods gradually over about 7 to 14 days to reduce the chance of digestive upset. Mix increasing amounts of the new food with decreasing amounts of the old food over that period. If your cat develops persistent digestive problems or stops eating during the change, contact your veterinarian. See VCA’s general feeding guidelines for cats.

How to feed an adult cat and manage portions

For an adult cat, choose food labeled complete and balanced for adult maintenance, unless a veterinarian recommends a different diet. Start with the label’s feeding guidance, measure the daily portion, and account for any treats or other food offered. The appropriate amount depends on the cat; there is no single calorie target that suits every adult.

Watch the cat’s body condition and weight over time. If weight is changing, adjust portions with veterinary guidance rather than making a large, abrupt reduction. Cornell reports that overweight and obese cats in a follow-up to a study of more than 2,000 cats were associated with higher health risks. Those group-level associations are not a prediction for an individual cat. Its feeding guidance also recommends veterinary input for diet changes related to disease.

Should I feed my cat wet food or dry food?

Wet and dry foods can both be appropriate if they are complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage. Compare their adequacy statements and calorie information, then consider portioning, your cat’s preferences, and any health needs. Wet food is typically about 70 to 80 percent water, according to Cornell’s article edited in 2024; cats should still have fresh water available. A food’s form by itself does not show whether it is nutritionally suitable for a particular cat.

Dental comfort, appetite, hydration, and medical conditions may affect which option works best. If your cat has a diagnosed disease, is losing weight, or needs a therapeutic diet, ask a veterinarian to guide the choice. Do not assume a food is appropriate for a health condition based only on its packaging or texture.

Do senior cats need a special food?

Not necessarily. There is no single established nutrient profile that defines a diet every senior cat needs. Older cats differ in when and how they age, and the right food depends on health, weight, muscle condition, appetite, and veterinary assessment. VCA’s guide to feeding mature, senior, and geriatric cats explains why age alone does not determine the diet.

Keep an eye on weight and muscle condition as your cat gets older. A change in appetite, difficulty eating, or unexplained weight loss deserves veterinary attention. Some diseases call for a therapeutic diet, but that choice should be made with a veterinarian rather than by switching to a senior-labeled product automatically.

When to contact a veterinarian about feeding

General feeding guidance is not a treatment plan. Seek veterinary advice before making a disease-related diet change, and contact a veterinarian if your cat refuses food and is losing weight or has another unexplained change in weight or appetite. A veterinarian can assess whether the problem calls for a different feeding plan or further evaluation.
