Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The first 30 days with a new kitten are best treated as a flexible settling-in period, not a fixed developmental calendar. Start with a quiet, safe home base, keep food and routines familiar, arrange a veterinary visit within the first week, and build trust through short, positive interactions.
This guide is for a weaned kitten that eats independently. Newborn, orphaned, chilled, or bottle-fed kittens need age-specific care and prompt veterinary or experienced-foster help.
Before your kitten arrives
Prepare a quiet, kitten-proofed room where the kitten can find food, water, a litter box, a resting place, and a safe hiding spot. Keep food and water dishes separate from the litter box. Secure cords, medications, blind cords, small objects, and anything fragile or unsafe to chew.
What do I need for a new kitten?
- Complete food formulated for kitten growth, ideally the food the kitten already eats.
- Separate food and water dishes.
- A low-entry litter box and familiar litter, if possible.
- A secure carrier with washable bedding.
- A scratching post or pad, interactive toys, and a safe resting place such as a bed or box.
- Adoption and medical records, plus your veterinarian’s contact information.
These are useful categories, not a required shopping list. Choose a litter box the kitten can enter easily, keep it clean, and observe which litter texture and scratching surfaces the kitten prefers. See Cornell Feline Health Center’s new-cat guidance and the AAHA new-kitten checklist.

Arrival and the first days
- Bring the kitten home in a secured carrier. Take it directly to the prepared room.
- Let the kitten emerge voluntarily. Open the carrier and allow time to explore; do not pull the kitten out or force handling.
- Show where essentials are. Make the food, water, litter box, and resting place easy to find.
- Keep the routine calm and familiar. Continue the existing food at first when it is appropriate for kitten growth, and avoid overwhelming the kitten with visitors or access to the whole home.
- Observe and note changes. Keep track of appetite, litter use, energy, and any signs of illness.
Hiding or cautious exploration can occur during adjustment. Give the kitten a safe retreat and let it approach at its own pace. Contact a veterinarian promptly if it is not eating, has diarrhea, is sneezing or unusually quiet, or otherwise seems ill.
Days 1–7: establish care and routine
Arrange the first veterinary visit
Book an examination within the first week at home, or sooner if the kitten seems unwell. Bring adoption and medical records, including any known vaccine or deworming history. Ask the clinic whether it wants a stool sample.
Discuss the kitten’s diet and growth, stool testing, vaccines, parasite prevention, and when to return. The veterinarian should tailor recommendations to the kitten’s age, health, records, and local risks. Do not choose an over-the-counter or herbal dewormer without veterinary advice. AAHA’s checklist outlines topics to cover during new-kitten care.

Keep food changes gradual
Use a complete-and-balanced food formulated for growth and ask the veterinary team how much to feed this kitten. If a change from the current food is needed, transition gradually rather than switching abruptly. Keep fresh water available. Kittens generally need kitten-formulated food while they are growing; ask your veterinarian when to change to an adult diet. See VCA’s kitten-feeding guidance.

Make litter access easy
Use a clean box that the kitten can enter comfortably, with familiar litter when possible. Many cats prefer unscented, fine-textured litter, but individual preferences vary. Keep the box accessible and away from food and water. If the kitten avoids it, check its location, cleanliness, and ease of entry, and ask the veterinarian about repeated accidents or signs of illness.
Weeks 2–3: build confidence gradually
Continue a predictable routine of meals, rest, litter-box care, and play. Offer brief, gentle interactions and let the kitten choose whether to approach. Reward calm handling and new experiences with food or play, and stop or make the experience easier if the kitten appears distressed.

- Make the open carrier a familiar resting place with bedding.
- Introduce gentle grooming or nail-care touches in short steps.
- Use toys for play rather than hands or feet, and supervise interactive toys.
- Keep scratching outlets available and reward their use.
If other cats live in the home and the new kitten’s health history is unknown, keep them separated until the kitten has had a veterinary examination. Ask the veterinarian when and how to begin introductions. For socialization and handling, follow the kitten’s comfort rather than trying to meet a deadline.
Week 4 and onward: review progress
Review appetite, elimination, play, and comfort with the veterinarian, and keep scheduled follow-up appointments. Continue any vaccine and parasite plan set by the clinic; a kitten may need care beyond the first month. Expand access to the home gradually while keeping a safe resting place available.
Progress is individual. A kitten does not need to be fully settled or complete its vaccine series within 30 days. If it is eating poorly, failing to gain weight, or showing signs of illness, contact the veterinary team rather than waiting for the next routine visit.

FAQ
How do you take care of a kitten?

What if my kitten hides after coming home?
Let the kitten rest in a safe hiding place and approach in its own time. Keep essentials easy to find and interactions calm. Contact a veterinarian if hiding is accompanied by not eating, diarrhea, unusual quietness, or other signs of illness.
Should I change my kitten’s food right away?
Usually, keep the familiar food initially if it is appropriate for kitten growth. If a change is needed, transition gradually and ask your veterinarian about the right diet and feeding amount.

Arrange an examination within the first week at home if possible. Seek advice sooner if the kitten is not eating, has diarrhea, is sneezing, is unusually quiet, or seems ill.
When can my kitten meet my other cats?
If the kitten’s health history is unknown, keep it separate until it has been examined. Ask your veterinarian when to start introductions, then proceed gradually and avoid forcing contact.
The Bottom Line
The first month is a time to create a safe routine, learn what is normal for your kitten, and establish veterinary care—not to follow a rigid calendar. Keep food changes gradual, make litter and resting areas easy to use, offer short positive experiences, and let the kitten’s health and confidence guide each next step.
