Interactive play gives cats a safe chance to stalk, chase, pounce and catch—behaviours that matter to their wellbeing. A wand toy can turn those instincts into shared activity, but play is one part of a cat’s wider environment, not a guarantee of happiness or a cure for behaviour problems. The right approach depends on your cat’s preferences, age and comfort.
Why interactive play matters
Play lets cats practise parts of the hunting sequence, including watching, stalking, chasing, pouncing and catching. Cats Protection describes play as important to cats’ wellbeing and health. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA) also includes opportunities for play and predatory behaviour among the essential needs of indoor cats.

That need can be harder to meet indoors. In its August 2025 position-statement announcement, FelineVMA committee chair Ilona Rodan, DVM, DABVP (Feline), AdvCertFB, said: “Indoor-only cats are often assumed to be the safest, but it is more challenging to meet their needs, impacting their physical and emotional health and resulting in more caregiver concerns about behavior.” Play can help provide activity and engagement, alongside other elements of a suitable environment.
How to play with a wand toy
A wand or fishing-rod toy lets you share a chase game while keeping the toy—and your hands—at a distance. Move the lure in ways that invite your cat to watch, stalk and pursue it. Vary the pace and direction rather than repeatedly waving it over your cat’s head. Let your cat catch the toy periodically: being able to capture simulated prey can help avoid frustration.

- Direct the game at the toy, never at your hands or feet.
- Pause to let your cat watch, approach and pounce; not every cat wants constant movement.
- Allow occasional catches, then resume the game if your cat remains interested.
- Rotate toys and check them for damage. Remove anything that could be shredded or swallowed.
Supervise play with string or fishing-rod attachments. A cat can become entangled in an unattended toy, so put it away when the game ends rather than leaving it out while your cat is alone.
How often should I play with my cat?
Offer play regularly in brief sessions that suit your cat. Cats Protection says even five minutes a day engaging a cat in play can have a positive impact; this is practical guidance in its 2025 enrichment guide, not a proven minimum or a prescribed dose. Some cats will welcome more frequent games, while others prefer shorter or less vigorous sessions.

Watch your cat’s response and adapt the timing and style. If your cat loses interest, stop and try again later rather than forcing a session. Cats Protection also says its cited research has shown daily interactive play can reduce hunting behaviour, but the guide passage does not identify the underlying study or quantify an effect. Treat this as a possible benefit, not a promise for every cat.

Interactive chase play is only one option. Food-based activities can encourage foraging, while places to climb, hide and explore add variety to an indoor cat’s surroundings. The best choice is the one your individual cat will use safely.

You do not need to buy a special product to provide enrichment. Scatter feeding or a simple homemade puzzle may work for a cat that enjoys searching for food. A puzzle is not a substitute for shared play if your cat seeks interaction, and a wand toy may not suit a cat that prefers quieter activities.

Laser toys can prompt chasing, but Cats Protection cautions that a cat may become frustrated if it cannot catch the simulated prey. If you use one, consider ending with a tangible toy or treat your cat can capture. FelineVMA client guidance likewise emphasizes letting cats catch simulated prey at least occasionally.

Keep toys in good condition and remove loose, string-like or damaged items when you cannot supervise. If your cat suddenly changes how it plays or behaves, or develops new or increasing play-aggression concerns, Cats Protection advises consulting a veterinarian and a qualified behaviourist. A change in play is a reason to consider the cat’s wellbeing, not simply to add more toys.
