That claim is no longer accepted: Nature retracted the original paper on 22 July 2020, and a 2021 study of a more complete specimen concluded that Oculudentavis was a lizard, not a dinosaur.
What was found in the amber?
The fossil was a skull measuring 14.25 millimeters, preserved in amber from northern Myanmar dated to roughly 99 million years ago. Its small size and bird-like proportions prompted the original authors to describe Oculudentavis khaungraae as a tiny avian dinosaur. The skull’s measurement and that identification belong to the 2020 account, not to the current interpretation.
Why was the fossil reclassified?
The original description relied on a single, incomplete skull. In 2021, Arnau Bolet and colleagues analyzed a more complete specimen and concluded that Oculudentavis was a “bizarre lizard of uncertain position.” Their analysis found that its bird-like proportions reflected convergent evolution: a resemblance that evolved independently, rather than evidence that it was a bird or dinosaur.
| Question | 2020 interpretation | Interpretation in the 2021 study |
|---|---|---|
| What was it? | Bird-like dinosaur, based on the skull described by the original Nature paper. | Lizard of uncertain placement, based on a more complete specimen and new phylogenetic analysis. |
| What evidence was available? | A single tiny skull. | A more complete specimen. |
| What is the publication status? | The Nature paper was retracted on 22 July 2020. | The reanalysis was published in Current Biology in 2021. |
| What is the significance? | The paper presented the skull as evidence that dinosaurs could be exceptionally small. | The lizard identification highlights how convergent anatomy can mislead classification and how amber can preserve tiny vertebrate remains. |
What did its teeth and eyes reveal?
The 2020 paper interpreted the long row of teeth as evidence of an invertebrate diet and the small pupil as a sign of daytime activity. Those were inferences made under the now-retracted bird interpretation. They should not be presented as established facts about Oculudentavis.
