Wet food adds water to a cat’s meals, offers varied flavors and textures, and generally has fewer calories per 100 grams than dry food. These features can be useful for some cats, but wet food is not automatically more nutritious, a treatment for disease, or the right choice for every cat. Choose a complete-and-balanced food for your cat’s life stage, serve an appropriate amount, and ask your veterinarian about diets for diagnosed conditions.
What are the benefits of feeding cats wet food?
The clearest general benefit is moisture: Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine says canned cat food contains at least 75% moisture. Its separate feeding guide describes wet food as typically 70–80% water. Because the figures come from different Cornell pages, treat them as useful descriptions rather than a single guaranteed value for every product. A cat eating wet food may drink less from a bowl, but fresh water should always remain available.
1. It adds water through the meal
Water in food contributes to total fluid intake without requiring a cat to drink it all from a bowl. This can be useful for cats that take in little water voluntarily, though wet food alone should not be relied on to resolve dehydration. If your cat seems dehydrated or unwell, contact a veterinarian.
2. It can support urine dilution
More water intake can make urine less concentrated, a nutritional consideration for some cats with urinary crystals or stones. VCA Animal Hospitals’ guidance on urinary-stone nutrition says, “Water is the most important nutrient because it can dilute the urine and prevent the formation of all urinary stones.” That statement is about urinary-stone nutrition; it does not mean every wet food prevents urinary problems. A cat with a diagnosed condition may need a diet formulated for that specific problem, selected with a veterinarian.

3. It can contribute to a hydration plan for some cats with chronic kidney disease
Hydration matters in chronic kidney disease (CKD), and Cornell advises considering wet forms of a therapeutic kidney diet. Kidney diets are available in wet and dry forms: wet food is not itself a kidney diet, and canned food does not reverse or cure CKD. Cornell reports that some studies found cats with CKD eating a prescription kidney diet lived two to three times longer than cats eating standard commercial food. That finding concerns the therapeutic diet, not wet food generally or the wet format specifically.
4. It can provide a larger-looking portion for the same calories
VCA’s veterinary nutrition overview explains that wet food’s high moisture content lowers its calories per 100 grams compared with dry food. As a result, a cat may receive more food by weight for the same calorie allowance, which can make a meal look more substantial. This does not make weight loss automatic: total calories and portion size still matter.

5. It may suit a picky eater
Cornell describes canned food as highly palatable for most cats and notes that variety may help with finicky eaters. Wet foods also come in textures such as pâté, chunks in gravy, and stews. Preferences are individual, however; some cats favor dry food, and others accept either format.
6. It gives you options for serving a meal
VCA notes that canned food can be gently warmed to increase aroma and palatability, and that it may be used to hide medication. Check the medication instructions or ask the prescribing veterinarian before mixing a dose into food. If a cat does not finish the portion, it may not receive the full dose.

7. It may be easier to eat for a cat with chewing difficulty
Cornell notes that periodontal disease can make dry food difficult to chew. Wet food, smaller dry pieces, or adding water to food are possible alternatives to discuss with a veterinarian. A change in chewing or eating can signal oral pain; switching food is not a substitute for dental care.

Neither format is best for every cat. Wet food offers more moisture and often fewer calories per 100 grams; dry food may suit a cat’s preferences or an owner’s storage and feeding routine. Some cats do well with a combination. The format alone does not establish nutritional quality, and wet food does not provide the dental-health benefits associated with some specially designed dry foods.

- Nutritional adequacy: Check the package for a nutritional adequacy statement showing the food is complete and balanced for the appropriate life stage. Some specialty canned foods may be nutritionally incomplete.
- Calories and portions: Check calories per serving and feed an amount suited to your cat. If combining wet and dry food, count calories from both rather than adding wet food on top of the existing ration. Cornell cautions that free feeding or portions above a cat’s energy needs can contribute to excess intake and weight gain.
- Medical needs: Ask your veterinarian whether a diagnosed condition calls for a therapeutic diet. Ordinary wet food is not interchangeable with a prescription urinary or kidney formula.
- Acceptance and practicality: Consider which flavors and textures your cat will eat, as well as cost per calorie, refrigeration after opening, and the possibility of uneaten food being wasted.
How to introduce wet food and manage portions
- Choose an appropriate food. Read the label’s nutritional adequacy statement and life-stage information. For a medical condition, ask your veterinarian which formulation is appropriate.
- Check the calorie information. Use the product’s calories per serving to plan portions. If you are adding wet food to an existing dry-food routine, adjust the dry portion so the new food is not simply extra calories.
- Offer a texture and flavor your cat is willing to eat. Preferences differ, so a cat’s response matters more than assumptions about what cats should like.
- Follow storage guidance and keep fresh water available. Refrigerate opened food as directed on its packaging, and do not leave leftovers out longer than the product guidance allows.
- Watch for eating or chewing difficulty. If a cat avoids food, struggles to chew, or has a new change in appetite, consult a veterinarian rather than relying on a food-format change alone.
