The “gift” was a birthday meal tailored to her care—not a cake or a product. Her exact age is uncertain because her birth date is unknown, but she is recognized as the world’s oldest living gorilla in captivity.
What did Fatou get for her birthday?
Fatou’s birthday gift was a feast of cherry tomatoes, beets, leeks, and lettuce, according to the Associated Press. She did not receive a conventional birthday cake: AP reported that the zoo avoided one because sugar is unhealthy for the aging gorilla.
The meal was a special birthday spread, not a diet recommendation for gorillas generally. Fatou’s food and feeding routine are adapted to her individual health needs.
Why is Fatou’s age an estimate?
Zoo Berlin marks Fatou’s birthday on April 13, and the zoo and Guinness World Records identified her as 69 on that date in 2026. Her exact birth date is not known. Guinness estimates she was born around 1957: she arrived in Berlin in May 1959 and was assessed as at least two years old. April 13 is therefore her zoo-designated birthday, not a confirmed birth date. Guinness World Records’ record page lists her as the oldest living gorilla in captivity; Guinness notes that record information may not be updated immediately.

How Zoo Berlin adapts Fatou’s care
Zoo Berlin says fruit has been removed from Fatou’s diet because of sugar-related health risks, including obesity and metabolic disease. She receives several small meals across the day. Keepers offer food in her enclosure or through enrichment devices.
A team of veterinarians, curators, and keepers regularly monitors her. Because she moves more slowly, she lives in her own enclosure, separate from the more active gorilla group. These arrangements describe Fatou’s individual care at Zoo Berlin; they should not be treated as a general feeding plan for gorillas.

Why her birthday is more than a longevity story
AP gives an approximate wild lifespan of 35–40 years for gorillas, but that range is not a fixed lifespan for every gorilla and does not make Fatou’s circumstances directly comparable to those of wild animals. She has spent decades in human care, and her age is estimated rather than precisely documented.
Zoo Berlin says western lowland gorillas are critically threatened by habitat loss and poaching. The zoo is collecting donations for a planned new gorilla habitat. For details about the birthday and the zoo’s current care information, see Zoo Berlin’s April 13, 2026 release.
