Toulouse doesn’t just curl up in an empty wheelchair: he wants to be with his dad, Joseph. In a Cats.com story published May 25, 2026, the cat meows until Joseph sits down, climbs into his lap, and comes running when he hears the wheelchair squeak or roll. It’s a sweet family anecdote—not evidence that all cats respond to wheelchairs the same way.
Why Toulouse comes running
According to Cats.com’s report by Katelynn Sobus, Toulouse has learned to associate familiar wheelchair sounds with Joseph. When he hears a squeak or the chair rolling, he hurries over. The report describes a cat eager for his father’s attention, rather than a cat drawn simply to the empty chair.
Joseph sometimes puts Toulouse back on the floor, but the cat climbs into his lap again. On one occasion, Joseph had to lift him off four times before leaving. The headline’s word “obsessed” captures the joke; the reported behavior is repeated, affectionate lap-seeking.
A family story, not a rule about cats
The article presents Toulouse’s behavior as one household’s experience. It does not establish a clinical explanation for his attachment or show that cats generally form the same association with wheelchairs. Joseph and his wife were expecting a baby, and the report playfully casts Toulouse’s persistence as “parenthood training.” Joseph also feels that the cats bring routine and structure to family life; those are his views as reported in the story.

How the other cats fit in
Toulouse’s housemates have their own preferences. Harpo reportedly sits in Joseph’s wheelchair when Joseph is away from it and is especially attached to Joseph’s wife. Molly, Joseph’s childhood cat, is described as more independent. Their contrasting habits add context to the family portrait, but they do not establish a general pattern of feline behavior.
