A steady phone, soft light, clear sound and a calm animal are enough to make a useful adoption video. Plan a few simple scenes, film only what the animal is comfortable doing, and use the clip to introduce—not make promises about—who the animal is.
What an adoption video should—and should not—do
A short video can help viewers see an animal’s appearance, movement and surroundings. It is an introduction, not a complete assessment of temperament, health, or fit with a particular household. ASPCA guidance on shelter placement considers medical and behavioral status, facility capacity, likelihood of placement and public safety; adoption conversations provide context that a brief clip cannot. See the ASPCA Position Statement on Responsibilities of Animal Shelters.
The available guidance offers practical production advice, not evidence that videos increase adoption rates or a tested formula for an ideal length. ASPCApro recommends keeping social videos to two minutes or less, but presents that as guidance—not a proven optimum. Let the animal’s comfort and the information viewers need determine what to include.
Plan a few useful scenes before you film
Decide what a prospective adopter should learn about this individual animal, then sketch a simple sequence. ASPCApro’s 10 Tips for Shooting Great Video of Your Shelter Animals recommends planning scenes, locations, settings, props, people and equipment. A modest plan helps you avoid long sessions and repeated takes.

- ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
- EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
- PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
- VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
- FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
- Choose a calm, familiar location that is appropriate for the animal.
- Pick one or two things the animal can comfortably show, such as walking with a handler or resting in a space.
- Decide who will handle the animal and who will record, if another person is available.
- Gather only the props or equipment needed; do not introduce something that unsettles the animal just to get a shot.
Think in simple shots: an opening view of the animal, a calm moment that shows movement or interaction when appropriate, and a separate view of the setting if that context matters. Keep the main shot uncluttered so viewers can see the animal or relevant person clearly.
Use a phone and keep the camera steady
You do not need a dedicated camera to follow this basic approach. ASPCApro’s related photo guide for available animals says a recent smartphone may have sufficient resolution for online and print use when set appropriately. That is practical guidance, not a comparison of every phone or a guarantee about every device.

- For best performance: keep firmware updated by checking the Tapo or Kasa App.
Stability matters more than elaborate gear. Set the phone on a stool or table at a useful height and distance, or use a tripod if one is already available. A tripod is an option, not a prerequisite. Position the camera before bringing the animal into the shot so you are not rearranging the setup around them.
Find soft light and check the frame
Indoors, try filming near a window. Outdoors, look for shade rather than harsh direct sun. Before recording, check the animal’s face: strong shadows, squinting or light coming from behind the animal can make the subject harder to see. ASPCApro’s photo guidance likewise recommends soft, even natural light and cautions against harsh sun and deep shadow.

Frame deliberately. Keep the animal or the person interacting with them as the focus, and make the relevant action easy to see. If viewers need to understand the surroundings, record a separate setting shot instead of squeezing background context into a busy close shot. Avoid moving the camera around in pursuit of action; a stable, clear view is easier to follow.
Make narration and sounds easy to understand
Choose a quiet spot, away from wind and echo, and stay close enough to the phone’s microphone. Speak clearly if you narrate; avoid competing background noise. ASPCApro notes that an earphone can serve as a microphone when the recording device needs to be farther away. Improve the position and environment first; the available guidance does not compare particular microphones or lighting accessories.

Ambient sound can be part of the scene, but it should not make spoken information unintelligible. If a location is noisy, record somewhere calmer rather than asking the animal to repeat an action for a cleaner take.

Filming should fit around humane, species-appropriate care—not the other way around. The ASPCA’s Animal Actors policy says filmed-media animals should be acquired, trained, transported, housed and handled humanely, with facilities and care appropriate to each species. That policy concerns filmed media broadly; it is not a shelter-specific production checklist.

The American Humane Society’s General Guidelines for Filmed Media call for water, protection from environmental conditions, and observation for physical or behavioral changes that may indicate discomfort, both on and off camera. These are broad filmed-media protections, so apply them alongside your shelter’s procedures and the individual animal’s needs.
- Keep the session brief and stop if the animal seems uncomfortable or the setup is not working for them.
- Do not use repeated takes, props or handling to force a particular behavior.
- Make sure the animal has appropriate care and protection during filming, not only in the recorded shot.
- Follow shelter policies and species-appropriate handling practices.
Edit simply and check the destination before posting
Choose the clearest usable moments and arrange them so viewers can follow what they are seeing. Basic or built-in editing options are enough for a simple introduction; software examples in the ASPCApro guide may not reflect current product recommendations. Do not add edits or narration that make an animal’s behavior appear more certain or representative than the clip supports.
ASPCApro names YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook and TikTok as possible publishing channels, but platform features, specifications and performance can change. Check the current requirements for the destination you choose instead of relying on older claims about reach or platform practices. Whatever the channel, pair the video with the shelter’s fuller animal information and adoption process.
