A mother cat and her kittens need a quiet, secure room, food suited to nursing, and close observation during the first weeks. Your job as a foster is mostly to support the mother, keep the space clean and warm, and notice early when a kitten is not doing well. Your foster coordinator or veterinarian always takes priority over the general guidance below, because they know the individual cats.
Start with the foster program or the found-kitten check
If you are already placed through a rescue or shelter, contact the coordinator before you make any care decisions. Ask for intake instructions, the veterinary arrangements, emergency contacts, and the supply list. Programs differ in how they handle feeding, vaccinations, deworming, and when kittens move on, so their written plan should guide your daily routine.
If you found the kittens outdoors, do not assume they have been abandoned just because the mother is out of sight. The ASPCA’s found-kitten guidance puts it this way: “Removing kittens from their current environment may not always be the right answer as the mom cat could be nearby getting food (or hiding from you)—and no one can care for a kitten like their mom can!”
Use the table below to decide your first step.
| What you see | What to do first |
|---|---|
| Kittens appear healthy, and a mother may be nearby | Observe from a distance, avoid impulsive handling, and ask a local rescue or shelter for guidance. Check whether an owner is looking for them and follow your local found-animal procedure. |
| Kittens look ill or injured | Contact a local shelter, rescue, or veterinary clinic promptly and call ahead before you travel. |
| Kittens are already in your foster program | Follow the coordinator’s intake plan, then use the monitoring steps below. |
| The mother is not nursing or caring for a kitten | Contact the foster coordinator or veterinarian promptly. Do not wait to see whether the problem resolves. |
Set up a quiet, kitten-proof room
Before the cat arrives, prepare a quiet room with a door, or a suitable large crate, and a separate nesting area. Keep the room away from household traffic, other pets, and noise. Visitors should be limited, and the mother should not be handled more than necessary.

The included measuring cup and funnel make the process of mixing formula more precise and spill-free, making it the ideal assistant for pet owners and animal rescuers.
Kittens are small enough to get into places you would not expect, so kitten-proof the space before you bring them in:
- Remove or block gaps behind furniture and under appliances where a kitten could become wedged.
- Secure dangling blind cords and any loose strings.
- Limit access to high shelves, closets, and concealed spaces the kittens could climb into.
- Keep the nesting box or crate low enough that a newborn cannot be trapped above the floor.
Give the mother food and water, a litter box placed away from her bowls, and clean, dry bedding. Check the bedding regularly and change it when it becomes damp or soiled, so the kittens do not get chilled. Let the mother settle at her own pace. Give her privacy, but keep looking in on her and the litter each day.
Support the mother’s nursing
In the earliest weeks, the mother usually handles nursing, grooming, and stimulating the kittens to eliminate. Your role is to feed her, keep her litter box and bedding clean, provide appropriate gentle socialization, and monitor the health of the whole family. Watch that every kitten is nursing and that the mother is settled with them.

Feeding a nursing mother
Kitten Lady recommends kitten food for a nursing mother because it is higher in protein and fat. Best Friends Animal Society advises offering both wet and dry food, and states that a nursing mother can eat two to four times as much as a cat who is not nursing. The Best Friends figure compares intake between the two groups; the page does not give a publication year, and it is not a guaranteed amount for every cat. Ask your coordinator or veterinarian what food and quantity suit the individual mother, and adjust only with their guidance.

Know the warning signs
Most of the time the mother and kittens need little more than quiet and regular checks. Contact the foster coordinator or veterinarian promptly if you see any of the following:

- Frequent crying or restlessness in a kitten.
- Weakness or a kitten that does not move well.
- A kitten that feels cold to the touch.
- Diarrhea or signs of dehydration.
- A kitten that is not nursing, or a mother that is not caring for her litter.
Seek urgent veterinary advice for shallow or labored breathing, marked weakness, coldness, or pale or blue coloration. Best Friends specifically cautions against feeding a chilled kitten, because it can cause serious harm. Warm the kitten gently only if your coordinator or veterinarian tells you how to do it safely, and call them while you act.
This is general triage guidance, not a diagnosis. Only a veterinarian can determine what is wrong with an individual kitten.
When the mother cannot nurse
If the mother cannot nurse, or a kitten is orphaned, the care load changes sharply. General neonatal guidance describes frequent formula feeding, keeping the kitten warm, stimulating toileting, and weighing daily. Exact feeding intervals and amounts depend on the kitten’s age, weight, and condition, and on the program’s protocol. Do not apply a generic schedule you found online. Ask for a written plan and a supply list from the coordinator before you start.

A digital scale is most useful in this situation, because daily weights show whether a kitten is gaining. For a litter that is nursing normally, it is not a central requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Weaning gradually
Weaning happens over weeks, not in a single day. The ASPCA says kittens should begin nibbling solid food while they are still nursing, and by five to six weeks they should be consistently nibbling a high-quality dry food. The mother also teaches eating, litter habits, and play. Abrupt separation can harm both kitten health and socialization, so do not remove kittens from the mother early without a care reason.
Timing depends on the mother’s health and on whether the kittens are eating on their own. Agree on a separation date with your coordinator. As the kittens become mobile and start leaving the nest, introduce a low-sided litter box, and follow the program’s socialization and preventive veterinary care schedule.

- Angled Bottle Design for Natural Feeding: 45 angled kitten bottles allow nursing pet babies to drink milk while lying down, which is the most natural way for pet babies to feed. The ergonomic design provides comfort during feeding sessions, and holding the kitten feeding bottle for extended periods will not cause fatigue. The kitten nipple can be used in conjunction with a syringe for accurate milk portion control, especially useful when weak kittens need syringe feeding
- Three Silicone Nipple Sizes for All Ages: Three different sizes of pacifiers ensure kitten feeders can be used from birth to weaning. The soft silicone nipple is appealing for kittens and puppies. If the nipple's milk outlet needs adjustment, scissors can be used to widen the opening for better flow
- Ventilation System to Reduce Choking: Bottle features a ventilation system similar to human baby bottles, eliminating the need for manual ventilation during feeding and reducing the probability of choking on milk. Provides a safety protection comparable to infant feeding products
- Complete Feeding Kit Included: The product includes 1 x 60ml bottle, 1 x 5ml syringe, 1 x small nipple, 1 x medium nipple, and 1 x large nipple, providing everything needed for feeding kittens at various stages of development
- Safety Precaution for Teething Pets: When pet babies develop sharp teeth, use the feeding products with caution as nipples can be easily bitten off or swallowed by accident. Monitor your pet during feeding to ensure safe usage
Plan for the time commitment
Neonatal fostering can demand frequent feeding checks, daily observation, and veterinary rechecks. The ASPCA describes the average foster period for kittens in its New York City nursery as two to eight weeks. That is a local program figure, not a general estimate, so ask your coordinator how long your placement is likely to last.
Supplies to prepare
- Kitten food suited to a nursing mother, along with the wet and dry food your program recommends.
- Washable, kitten-safe bedding that can be changed often.
- A low-sided litter box, placed away from food and water bowls.
- Food and water bowls.
- An enclosure or carrier if your organization recommends one.
- A digital scale, if you may be caring for orphaned or supplemental-feeding kittens.
Use the program’s own supply list first. Any product choice should follow the safe setup and the coordinator’s advice.
Bringing it together
Keep the room quiet and kitten-proof, support the mother with appropriate food and clean bedding, and check the litter every day. Let the mother do the nursing and grooming whenever she can. Move quickly when a kitten is cold, weak, struggling to breathe, or not nursing, and always contact your foster coordinator or veterinarian before making a major care decision.
Keep the coordinator’s number where you can reach it at any time.
