Tips for Giving a Pet as a Holiday Gift—Responsibly

A responsible pet gift starts with the recipient’s informed interest, capacity to care, and involvement in choosing the animal. If timing or readiness is uncertain, make adoption a future plan instead.

A pet can be a thoughtful gift only when the recipient has already shown sustained interest and is ready to care for that animal. Don’t surprise someone with a live pet unless you know they have the time, space, and means to provide responsible care—and involve them in choosing the animal. If consent, readiness, or holiday timing is uncertain, give a pet-care book or an adoption kit and offer to visit a shelter together later.

Should you give a pet as a holiday gift?

Readiness matters more than the occasion. The ASPCA’s position is that pets should be gifts only for people who have expressed sustained interest in owning one and can care for the animal responsibly. A general fondness for animals is not the same as wanting a pet or agreeing to become its caregiver.

There is no evidence-based reason to treat every gift placement as destined to fail. The ASPCA reports that 96% of surveyed gift recipients said receiving the pet increased or did not affect their attachment, and 86% of the pets referred to in that survey were still in the home. The ASPCA’s statement does not specify the survey date; its December 12, 2013 announcement reported the findings. The organization also summarizes earlier studies as finding that pets acquired as gifts were less likely to be relinquished. These are reported findings, not a guarantee about any individual animal or household.

Why a live-animal surprise is risky

A new pet needs a calm transition and the recipient’s informed participation. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) advises against surprising someone with a live animal and recommends involving the future owner in choosing a companion. The ASPCA allows a surprise only conditionally, when the giver knows the recipient has the time and means to care for the pet. The practical middle ground is to confirm interest and readiness first, then let the recipient help choose.

Holiday activity can make the transition harder. The ASPCA advises making sure the recipient has enough time to help the animal settle in. American Humane notes that holiday bustle can frighten a new pet or cause it to be overlooked, and suggests waiting until after the holiday if the family is ready to adopt. In 2024, UK Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss said Christmas is not the best time to introduce a pet, while noting that precautions can help keep animals safe and happy during the festive period. Her advice concerns the Christmas period in the UK; the broader point applies wherever holiday demands leave little time for a new arrival.

Check whether the recipient and household are ready

Talk directly with the person before making plans. Ask whether they want a pet, which species they are prepared for, and who will be the primary caregiver. Then consider the animal’s needs alongside the recipient’s actual circumstances:

  • Household fit: Is there suitable space? Have other household members been included in the decision, and can the home accommodate the animal’s needs?
  • Long-term commitment: Michigan’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) says dogs and cats may live 10 to 15 years or longer. Small mammals including gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits can live five to eight years or more. These are general ranges, not a prediction for a particular pet.
  • Ongoing costs: MDARD’s 2025 guidance quotes an AVMA estimate of about $600 per year for a dog and $530 per year for a cat in veterinary care alone. Actual costs vary by breed, age, and health needs; those figures are not a complete ownership budget.
  • Caregiver for a child: The ASPCA says that if the recipient is under 12, parents must be ready and eager to assume responsibility. A child’s enthusiasm does not replace an adult caregiver.

Species alone does not determine whether a gift is manageable: each animal has individual needs, and a pet is a long-term commitment. If the recipient or household is unsure about care requirements or costs, discuss the choice with a veterinarian, shelter, or responsible breeder before committing.

Make the gift recipient-led

If the person is ready but a holiday arrival would be disruptive, give something that makes a future adoption possible without committing them to an animal. The AVMA suggests a pet-care or breed-characteristics book as an alternative to an unplanned live-animal gift. An adoption kit, collar, or leash can accompany a note offering to visit a shelter together; a donation in the recipient’s name is another option. These are ways to share the idea, not substitutes for the recipient’s agreement.

When the recipient is ready, let them meet and help select the individual animal. MDARD notes that shelters can provide opportunities to learn about, meet, and interact with adoptable animals. The recipient can ask questions about the animal’s history, health, and needs before deciding.

Choose a trustworthy source

The ASPCA lists shelters, rescue organizations, friends, family, and responsible breeders among possible sources, and cautions against unknown or untrusted sellers. Ask for clear information about the animal and arrange to meet it before making a commitment.

For online transactions, MDARD’s 2025 guidance warns against wiring money or paying for a pet with gift cards, and advises meeting the pet in person before paying. For imported rescue animals, UK guidance calls for checking the organization, authorized transport, veterinary checks, and relevant disease tests. Those specific import checks concern the UK; prospective owners elsewhere should follow the rules and veterinary advice that apply where they live.

If the recipient already has a pet

A gift for an animal already in the household avoids making someone a new owner, but it still needs to suit that pet. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends toys sized appropriately for the animal and checking treat ingredients. Ask the recipient or their veterinarian before choosing food or treats if the pet has health or diet needs.
