’Tis the Season to Give to Animal Charities: Why Donation Volume Is Not the Same as Impact

Holiday giving supports animal charities, but a seasonal rise in donations does not prove more animals are helped. Here is how to judge the charity and the figures.

Holiday giving is real, and animal charities depend on it. But a seasonal rise in donations does not, by itself, show that more animals are helped. The studies and reports behind this guide explain why people give at certain times of year and how evaluators think about influence and outcomes. None of them measures whether a seasonal surge in donations to animal charities improves animal welfare. What you can control is where your money goes and how you judge the charity that receives it.

What drives seasonal giving, according to the evidence

The most useful recent source on why people give is the Charity Commission for England and Wales’s Public trust in charities 2026 report. Its seasonal findings are qualitative. Participants described Christmas and Easter as times when some people give more, and Ramadan as a period when giving is encouraged for some Muslim participants. These are reported motivations from a small study, not population estimates, and they do not show that animal charities see a measured seasonal increase.

The same report found that animal charities were among the causes people chose because of direct personal experience, such as adopting a pet. That point matters for animal charities in particular: a person who has been through a rescue adoption or a shelter visit often feels a stronger pull to support the cause. Personal connection is a reason to give, but it is not a measure of what the gift accomplishes.

Why a seasonal rise is not the same as more impact

When a charity reports that giving has risen, it is describing money received. Impact is a separate question about what that money did for animals. Keeping three measures apart makes the difference clear.

Measure What it tells you What it does not tell you
Outputs (grants made, campaigns run, services delivered) What the charity did with its money Whether animals were better off as a result
Donations influenced (an evaluator’s estimate) Roughly how much giving an evaluator attributes to its recommendations Animal-welfare outcomes, which the estimate does not measure
Welfare outcomes for animals Whether animals’ conditions or lives improved How much money was spent, or how many donors gave

Donation totals sit in the first two rows at best. A December spike can fund more outputs, and that can be useful, but whether it reaches the welfare outcome depends on the charity’s work and the evidence behind it.

The figures, read with their limits

Several headline numbers circulate about animal and charitable giving. Each one answers a different question, and none should be read as a measure of animal impact.

What “telling your story” means for donors

In Associated Press coverage of Giving USA 2026, Wendy McGrady, chair of Giving USA, said: “Those that were effective in sharing their story saw their donors respond.” The remark is about how organizations communicate needs and how donors respond to that communication. It is not evidence that a particular charity or gift caused any animal-welfare outcome. Treat a compelling appeal as a prompt to ask questions, not as proof.

How to judge an animal charity before you give

Trust in a charity is built from what it reports, not from how it looks in December. The UK trust report found that participants’ confidence was shaped by clear financial information, impact updates and reputation, and that concerns about administrative costs and visible impact were common. These are reported participant views, not universal donor behavior, but they point to the same practical checks.

What does the charity actually do?

Look for a specific description of the animals or problem it works on, the places it works, and the methods it uses. A vague mission with no named programs gives you little to evaluate.

What outcomes does it track?

Outputs are a starting point. Ask whether the charity reports outcome data, such as changes in animal welfare, and how it knows its work caused those changes. The 2026 scoping review supports attention to outcome data and cost effectiveness, and it shows that evaluation methods vary widely across the literature.

Is its reporting transparent?

Check whether accounts are published, whether funding and spending are explained, and whether impact updates are issued regularly. Do not treat a low overhead ratio as a sufficient measure of trustworthiness. The sources here do not validate that ratio as an impact measure, and a charity can spend little on administration and still achieve little for animals.

Would an extra gift be used well?

Ask how the charity decides where additional money can be used productively. ACE’s fund process, described below, uses a “room for more funding” check. That is one useful way of thinking about marginal giving, though it still does not guarantee an outcome for any particular donation.

Single charity or a pooled fund?

Where available, compare giving directly to a named charity with a pooled fund. The table below uses ACE’s Recommended Charity Fund as the example of a pooled option, based on how ACE describes it.

Axis Named charity Pooled fund (ACE Recommended Charity Fund)
Allocation control You choose the recipient The fund assigns donations across recommended organizations
Use of current information Depends on your own review of the charity’s recent work ACE says allocations use current recommendations and room-for-more-funding information, distributed twice a year
Transparency and fit Review the charity’s stated work, evidence, reporting, geography and funding needs yourself Relies on ACE’s evaluation scope and published recommendations; review them against your own priorities
Timing and eligibility Check the charity’s own giving terms and deadlines Check current terms and which organizations the fund supports, as these details can change

Neither option is best for every donor. A named gift suits someone who has already found a charity they trust. A pooled fund suits someone who wants an evaluator’s current view applied to allocation.

A practical giving sequence

  1. Decide whether you want to choose the recipient yourself or delegate allocation to a pooled fund.
  2. Read the charity’s most recent annual or impact report. Note the outputs it lists and whether it reports any outcome data.
  3. Ask the charity two questions by email: what outcome it tracks, and what it would do with an additional gift.
  4. If you use an evaluator, check the date of its recommendations, since they are time-sensitive and cover only the charities it evaluated.
  5. Give, keep the receipt, and look for the impact update the charity promises. Judge the charity on that update, not on the size of its seasonal appeal.

Repeat the review the next year before you give again. A charity that reported clearly last year is a stronger candidate than one that only asked for money.
